ASMA AL-HUSNA — THE BEAUTIFUL NAMES OF ALLAH
"Asma al-husna" — "the most beautiful names" — refers to the names attributed to God, a phrase that appears in the Quran itself (see Al-A'raf 7:180: "To Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them"). A report in Bukhari and Muslim states that Allah has ninety-nine names and that whoever "encompasses" (ihsa) them will enter Paradise — "ihsa" here is explained as more than memorization: knowing, understanding, and living by them. This doesn't claim God's names are limited to these 99; the Quran and hadith attribute other names and attributes to God as well. The Quranic Basis for Asma al-Husna
The phrase "to Allah belong the best names" appears explicitly in four places. Al-Isra 17:110 states, "Say, 'Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful — whichever you call upon, to Him belong the best names,'" establishing that different beautiful names do not refer to different deities but to the perfect attributes of the one God. Ta-Ha 20:8 repeats the same statement with a tawhid emphasis: "Allah — there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names." Al-Hashr 59:22-24 then lists names such as Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim, Al-Malik, Al-Quddus, As-Salam, Al-Mu'min, Al-Muhaymin, Al-'Aziz, Al-Jabbar, and Al-Khaliq in succession — showing the names are meant to be understood within the unity of tawhid, not as disconnected slogans.
The Quran often pairs names together: "Al-Ghafur–Ar-Rahim" shows that forgiveness comes with mercy, "Al-'Aziz–Al-Hakim" shows that power comes with wisdom, and "As-Sami'–Al-'Alim" shows that hearing comes with complete knowledge. These pairings are a reminder not to approach any single name as an isolated "formula" detached from its context.
