Meaning and Explanation

Al-Adl is one of the best-known names in the traditional enumeration, yet the Quran conveys its meaning through related words rather than this exact noun. Quran 6:115 says that the word of the Lord is complete in truth and justice. Quran 4:40 states that Allah does not wrong even by the weight of a speck. Quran 21:47 describes just scales for the Day of Resurrection so that no soul is wronged at all. These passages establish divine justice with great clarity without requiring the page to pretend that the exact name-form Al-Adl appears in them. Justice is not the claim that every present distribution is fair. War, abuse, theft, discrimination, corrupt institutions, and human negligence create real wrongs. Saying “Allah is just” must never become a way to tell a harmed person that whatever happened to them was deserved. The belief instead denies that injustice escapes final knowledge and judgment, and it commands human beings to resist becoming agents of injustice themselves. Divine justice also exceeds the partiality of human perception. People know fragments, forget circumstances, protect their group, and apply unequal standards. That limitation does not make human judgment useless; it makes procedures, evidence, appeal, consultation, and conflict-of-interest rules necessary. Invoking Al-Adl while ignoring those safeguards turns a divine attribute into cover for bias. The name has a demanding inward application. A person must care about fairness when it costs them status, money, convenience, or victory. Defending justice only when one's own group benefits is loyalty to the group, not yet justice. This includes paying fairly, keeping agreements, hearing a vulnerable party, correcting false claims, and refusing collective blame. Questions about suffering and divine justice require humility. A short page cannot solve every theological problem or explain why a particular tragedy occurred. It can state what the sources establish, reject victim-blaming, and leave room for grief and lament. Honest faith does not require a wounded person to call pain easy or to accept a shallow explanation.
