O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allāh, through whom156 you ask one another,157 and the wombs.158 Indeed Allāh is ever,159 over you, an Observer.160

  1. [156] In whose name.
  2. [157] i.e., request favors and demand rights.
  3. [158] i.e., fear Allāh in regard to relations of kinship.
  4. [159] When used in conjunction with Allāh's attributes, the word "ever" (occurring repeatedly throughout this sūrah and elsewhere, such as in sūrah al-Aḥzāb) is quite inadequate in imparting the sense of continuation expressed by the word "kāna" in Arabic, which indicates "always was, is, and always will be."
  5. [160] Ever-present and taking account of everything.

And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. And do not give the weak-minded your property,163 which Allāh has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them with it and clothe them and speak to them words of appropriate kindness.

  1. [163] Although it is their property, Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) refers to it in the collective sense, reminding us that all wealth is provided by Him for the maintenance of the community as well as of individual members.

And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will grow up. And whoever, [when acting as guardian], is self-sufficient should refrain [from taking a fee]; and whoever is poor - let him take according to what is acceptable. Then when you release their property to them, bring witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.

Allāh instructs you concerning your children [i.e., their portions of inheritance]: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one's estate.164 And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one's parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [and/or sisters], for his mother is a sixth,165 after any bequest he [may have] made or debt.166 Your parents or your children - you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.

  1. [164] Literally, "that which he left."
  2. [165] Although the siblings themselves do not inherit in this case.
  3. [166] Based upon prophetic ḥadīths, scholars have ruled that debt takes precedent over a bequest, that a bequest may not include any who inherit by law, and that the total bequest may not be more than one third of one's estate. After the fulfillment of debts and bequests (if any), the remainder of the estate is to be divided according to the ordinances in this sūrah.

But if they are more than two, they share a third,167 after any bequest which was made or debt, as long as there is no detriment [caused].168 [This is] an ordinance from Allāh, and Allāh is Knowing and Forbearing.

Those who commit immorality [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify,169 confine them [i.e., the guilty women] to houses until death takes them or Allāh ordains for them [another] way.170

  1. [169] The witnesses must swear to actually having seen the act taking place.
  2. [170] The "other way" (i.e., penalty) was later revealed in 24:2, canceling the ruling in this verse.

And the two171 who commit it [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] among you - punish [i.e., dishonor] them both. But if they repent and correct themselves, leave them alone. Indeed, Allāh is ever Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.

  1. [171] Scholars differ over whether "the two" refers to two of the same sex (i.e., homosexuals) or those of opposite sexes. In either case, later rulings outlined in the sunnah have replaced this one.

The repentance accepted by Allāh is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon [after].172 It is those to whom Allāh will turn in forgiveness, and Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.

And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess.177 [This is] the decree of Allāh upon you. And lawful to you are [all others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your property, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse. So for whatever you enjoy [of marriage] from them, give them their due compensation178 as an obligation. And there is no blame upon you for what you mutually agree to beyond the obligation. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.

  1. [177] i.e., slaves or war captives who had polytheist husbands.
  2. [178] The mahr, a specified gift to the bride required of the man upon marriage.

And whoever among you cannot [find] the means to marry free, believing women, then [he may marry] from those whom your right hands possess of believing slave girls. And Allāh is most knowing about your faith. You [believers] are of one another. So marry them with the permission of their people and give them their due compensation [i.e., mahr] according to what is acceptable. [They should be] chaste, neither [of] those who commit unlawful intercourse randomly nor those who take [secret] lovers. But once they are sheltered in marriage, if they should commit adultery, then for them is half the punishment for free [unmarried] women. This [allowance] is for him among you who fears affliction [i.e., sin], but to be patient is better for you. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

Men are in charge of women182 by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allāh would have them guard.183 But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance184 - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly].185 But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted and Grand.

  1. [182] This applies primarily to the husband-wife relationship.
  2. [183] i.e., their husbands' property and their own chastity.
  3. [184] i.e., major rebellion or refusal of basic religious obligations.
  4. [185] This final disciplinary measure is more psychological than physical. It may be resorted to only after failure of the first two measures and when it is expected to amend the situation and prevent family breakup; otherwise, it is not acceptable. The Prophet ﷺ (who never struck a woman or a servant) additionally stipulated that it must not be severe or damaging and that the face be avoided.

O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying187 or in a state of janābah,188 except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women [i.e., had sexual intercourse] and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allāh is ever Pardoning189 and Forgiving.

  1. [187] The use of intoxicants was later prohibited completely. See 5:90-91.
  2. [188] Literally, "distance." The state of one under obligation to perform ghusl (a complete bath) due to having had sexual intercourse or ejaculation.
  3. [189] Literally, able to erase and remove sins completely, leaving no trace of them in the record of deeds.

About This Surah

Surah An-Nisa organizes communal responsibility around justice and protection of people exposed to power. It addresses orphans, inheritance, marriage, property, family disputes, public trusts, authority, hypocrisy, migration, armed conflict, and claims about Jesus. Its legal density demands qualified interpretation. The surah’s recurring standard is that wealth, kinship, gender, and political loyalty must never become excuses for betrayal, abuse, or injustice.

An-Nisa begins from humanity’s shared origin and immediately turns God-consciousness into responsibility toward relatives, women, and orphans. Property held for vulnerable people is a trust, not an opportunity for enrichment. The early inheritance passages define shares and boundaries, but applying them to an actual estate requires the wider legal tradition, verified family facts, and qualified local guidance.

Marriage and household passages address dowry, prohibited relationships, financial duties, misconduct, reconciliation, and separation. Verse 4:34 is frequently isolated in online argument. This entry does not turn one English rendering into a complete rule, and it never treats the verse as permission for domestic abuse. Verse 4:35’s arbitration process, the surah’s commands for fairness, prophetic practice, legal interpretation, and contemporary safety duties all matter when discussing family conflict.

The chapter then connects worship with neighbor care, financial honesty, and rejection of pride. Commands to return trusts and judge justly precede the instruction concerning authority and disagreement. Authority is therefore accountable to revelation, trust, and justice rather than being unlimited or immune from correction.

Conflict and migration passages distinguish different circumstances, including deliberate hostility, mistaken killing, treaty relations, people unable to migrate, and claims of peace. These distinctions block casual transfer of wartime language onto civilians or private disputes. Prayer under danger appears as regulated communal practice, not as a romanticized picture of violence.

Later sections expose hypocrisy, defend justice even against personal or family interest, regulate public speech about wrongdoing, and discuss earlier revelation and Jesus. The chapter closes by returning to inheritance, reinforcing its main argument: theology becomes credible through concrete protection, accountable authority, and fair distribution.

Core Themes

  • Shared human origin producing social responsibility
  • Orphan and family property treated as entrusted wealth
  • Household authority bounded by justice and safety
  • Public authority accountable to trust and revelation
  • Conflict distinctions preventing indiscriminate application
  • Justice upheld against self-interest and kinship

Structure

Verses 1–14: shared origin, orphans, and inheritance1-14

The opening joins kinship, God-consciousness, orphan protection, marriage responsibilities, and defined inheritance shares. Family structure is measured by accountability toward those whose wealth or position can be exploited.

Verses 15–35: sexual ethics and family conflict15-35

Repentance, marriage limits, financial rights, prohibited unions, household responsibilities, conflict, and arbitration appear together. Translation alone cannot supply a complete contemporary legal or safety framework.

Verses 36–57: worship and social responsibility36-57

Worship of God is linked to parents, relatives, orphans, neighbors, travelers, and people under one’s authority. Pride, stinginess, distorted religious claims, and moral corruption are criticized.

Verses 58–87: trusts, authority, and hypocrisy58-87

Trusts and just judgment frame obedience and dispute resolution. The section then contrasts genuine response with hypocrisy, evasive loyalty, and unwillingness to accept accountable judgment.

Verses 88–104: conflict, migration, and caution88-104

The surah distinguishes hostile, neutral, treaty-related, mistaken, and peaceful circumstances. Migration, wrongful killing, verification, and prayer under danger all require communal and legal context.

Verses 105–147: betrayal, justice, and public conduct105-147

A betrayal case leads into responsibility, repentance, secret counsel, justice against self-interest, public speech, and the exposure of hypocrisy. No group loyalty is allowed to defeat truth.

Verses 148–176: revelation, Jesus, and final inheritance148-176

The closing addresses harmful speech, prophetic continuity, Quranic claims about Jesus, theological excess, and the final inheritance ruling. Belief and material responsibility remain inseparable.

Reading Guide

Do not convert translation into personalized law

Inheritance, marriage, separation, and criminal or conflict passages operate within a developed legal tradition. Use the page to map themes and verse locations, not to calculate rights or issue rulings for a real case.

Read power from the viewpoint of the vulnerable

Track orphans, women, the poor, travelers, oppressed people, mistaken victims, and those unable to migrate. The surah repeatedly tests whether people with authority protect or exploit them.

Place authority beside trust and justice

Read verses 58–59 as a sequence. Returning trusts and judging fairly prevents the authority verse from becoming a defense of arbitrary rule or unconditional obedience to wrongdoing.

Preserve the distinctions inside conflict passages

Mark treaties, neutrality, claims of peace, mistaken killing, deliberate hostility, and inability to migrate. Those distinctions are essential safeguards against indiscriminate or private application.

Key Passages

Shared origin and orphan protection 1-10

The chapter opens with common human origin and immediately addresses family bonds and orphan property. Spiritual accountability is measured through the treatment of people whose wealth can be controlled by others. Its location in the chapter connects the preceding argument with the response that follows, so the surrounding verses should remain visible.

Inheritance shares and legal boundaries 11-14

Defined shares make distribution a matter of duty rather than family preference. Actual cases require the whole legal framework, complete family information, and qualified guidance beyond this editorial map. The surrounding verses define its immediate purpose and the limits that prevent a careless, polemical, or overbroad modern application.

Property, household conflict, and arbitration 29-35

Property protections, marital responsibilities, feared breakdown, and arbitration appear within one sequence. The passage must not be reduced to a slogan or used to legitimize abuse. Read this language within the chapter’s full movement before drawing broader theological, legal, political, or devotional conclusions from it.

Trusts, justice, and accountable authority 58-59

The command to return trusts and judge fairly comes before obedience and dispute resolution. That order makes justice and revelation limits on authority rather than optional qualities. Its force depends on the contrast and progression established around it, not on treating selected lines as a detached slogan.

Wrongful killing and verification 92-94

Mistaken killing receives serious legal treatment, while believers are told to verify rather than deny another person’s stated peace or faith for worldly gain. Conflict does not suspend moral caution. The passage remains part of the surah’s wider moral sequence, which supplies the proper direction for reflection, restraint, and response.

Do not defend betrayal 105-112

Revelation in a concrete dispute prevents communal loyalty from excusing wrongdoing. Responsibility remains with the wrongdoer, and accusation of an innocent person compounds the original offense. This context protects the passage from becoming an isolated shortcut and preserves the chapter’s balance of warning, duty, and mercy.

Justice against personal interest 135

Witness for justice must stand even against oneself, parents, or close relatives, and neither wealth nor poverty may distort testimony. This verse supplies a central ethical measure for the whole chapter. Its role becomes clearer when adjacent verses remain in view and the chapter’s movement is allowed to frame the reader’s conclusions.

Jesus and theological limits 157-171

The passage states Quranic claims about Jesus, prophetic continuity, and excess in religion. It should be explained accurately without translating theological disagreement into harassment of contemporary Christians. The purpose here is interpretive orientation, not a stand-alone ruling or promise detached from language, setting, authority, and ethical limits.

Recitation Note

No exclusive occasion, fixed repetition count, or guaranteed outcome is asserted in this batch for reciting Surah An-Nisa. Because the chapter contains dense family, inheritance, and public-law material, structured reading with qualified tafsir and legal guidance is more responsible than devotional marketing.

Interpretation Limits

  • VerseSurah does not issue inheritance, marriage, divorce, criminal-law, or armed-conflict rulings.
  • Verse 4:34 must not be presented as permission for domestic abuse; people facing danger should seek appropriate emergency, legal, medical, and safeguarding support.
  • Conflict verses require their treaty, migration, authority, and historical distinctions and never authorize private violence.
  • Interfaith passages state Quranic theology and must not become hostility toward named individuals or communities.
  • English translation choices cannot carry every Arabic legal nuance or replace qualified jurisprudence.
