Meaning and Explanation

Al-Bari appears in Quran 59:24 between Al-Khaliq and Al-Musawwir. English translations often render the three names as Creator, Originator or Inventor, and Fashioner or Shaper. Those glosses overlap, but the Quranic sequence invites the reader to notice more than repetition. The root b-r-ʾ can carry senses of bringing forth, separating or distinguishing, and being free of a fault or liability. In this divine name, the emphasis is on created beings being brought into actual existence as the kinds of beings Allah wills. The relationship among Al-Khaliq, Al-Bari, and Al-Musawwir should be explained with care. Some commentators describe a conceptual movement from determining or measuring, to bringing into existence, to giving a particular form. That is a useful reading, but it should not be turned into a rigid mechanical timeline or presented as though three independent acts belonged to separate agents. Quran 59:24 attributes the entire reality of creation to Allah and ends by naming Him Al-Aziz and Al-Hakim: the Almighty and the All-Wise. Al-Bari also offers a needed correction to the way people judge difference. Distinct bodies, capacities, languages, and life histories are not raw material for ranking human worth. This does not mean that illness, impairment, or suffering must be romanticized, or that medicine and accommodation are unnecessary. It means that a person's dignity does not depend on matching another person's body or social ideal. Contemplation should make a reader more careful with ridicule, exclusion, and the language of defect. The name is sometimes placed in popular recitation lists with fixed numbers and promised effects.
