سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allāh,1650 and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture1651 from their homes at the first gathering.1652 You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allāh; but [the decree of] Allāh came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.

  1. [1651] Referring to the Jews of Banun-Naḍeer, who broke their pact with the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ).
  2. [1652] This was the first tme they had ever been gathered and expelled.

And what Allāh restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allāh and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives1654 and orphans and the needy and the [stranded] traveler1655 - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

  1. [1654] Those of Banū Hāshim and Banū Muṭṭalib, whom he (ﷺ) had prohibited from accepting zakāh.
  2. [1655] This ruling concerning properties abandoned by an enemy without a war effort differs from that in Sūrah al-Anfāl, verse 41, which refers to spoils of war in which four fifths is distributed among those who fought in Allāh's cause.

About This Surah

Surah Al-Hashr reflects on the removal of a hostile group from Medina, the distribution of property, the generosity of the Helpers, the unreliability of hypocritical promises and the majesty of God. Its historical and legal passages require context. The chapter's moral center includes trust in God, economic fairness, freedom from selfishness and awareness that communities can appear strong while collapsing from within.

The opening describes a group from the People of the Book leaving their homes after conflict and broken expectations of protection. Historical identification and treaty context should be documented through reliable sources before the page gives detail. The verses should not be generalized into hostility toward Jewish people.

Property gained without ordinary battle is addressed separately, with distribution directed toward communal needs rather than concentrated circulation among the wealthy. This passage has legal and historical dimensions beyond a short summary.

The emigrants are praised for sacrifice, and the Helpers are praised for welcoming them and preferring others despite their own need. The chapter identifies protection from inner greed as a form of success.

Later verses expose hypocrites who promise support but abandon allies when consequences arrive. The image of Satan encouraging disbelief and then disowning the person illustrates manipulative relationships.

A reflection asks believers to consider what each soul has sent ahead for tomorrow. The Quran is then imagined as powerful enough to humble a mountain. The final verses present a sequence of divine names associated with knowledge, sovereignty, peace, security, authority, creation and beauty.

The opening concerns the expulsion of Banu Nadir in a specific Medinan conflict.

It must not be generalized into hostility toward Jewish people, confiscation of civilian property, or modern collective punishment.

Distribution of fay emphasizes God, the Messenger, relatives, orphans, the poor, travelers, and preventing wealth from circulating only among the rich; specific application requires qualified public law.

The closing divine names invite worship without occult numerology or guaranteed formulas.
