Certainly has Allāh heard the speech of the one who argues [i.e., pleads] with you, [O Muḥammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allāh. And Allāh hears your dialogue; indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Seeing.

Those who pronounce ẓihār1639 among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allāh is Pardoning and Forgiving.

And those who pronounce ẓihār from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allāh is Aware of what you do.

And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively1640 before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allāh and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allāh. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.

Have you not considered that Allāh knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There are not three in a private conversation but that He is the fourth of them,1642 nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.

Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation [i.e., ridicule and conspiracy] and then return to that which they were forbidden and converse among themselves about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that [word] by which Allāh does not greet you1643 and say among themselves, "Why does Allāh not punish us for what we say?" Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination.

About This Surah
Surah Al-Mujadilah begins with God hearing a woman who brings a complaint about a harmful marital declaration. The chapter corrects the practice, establishes expiation, warns that private conversation can be used for wrongdoing and teaches etiquette in gatherings. Its opening gives unusual prominence to a woman’s direct appeal and to divine awareness of speech.
A woman disputes or appeals to the messenger concerning her husband and directs her complaint to God. The chapter states that God hears the conversation. The pre-Islamic declaration addressed in the passage did not make a wife into a mother; it was false and harmful speech.
Expiation is described in stages. These are legal rulings requiring qualified jurisprudential explanation. A web guide should explain the moral purpose and historical practice without issuing personalized rulings.
The chapter repeatedly states that God knows what is in heavens and earth and is present in knowledge with secret conversations. This is a warning against conspiratorial or harmful private speech, not a reason for human surveillance or invasion of privacy.
Believers are told not to use private conversation for sin, aggression or disobedience, but for goodness and mindfulness. Satanic whispering may cause grief, but cannot harm independently.
Etiquette in assemblies includes making room and rising when asked. Knowledge and faith are honored, but the verse should not become status arrogance.
A section addresses people who seek alliances through false oaths and divided loyalty. Historical context matters, and modern political opponents should not be labeled through these verses without evidence.
The chapter opens by affirming that God heard a woman’s complaint concerning zihar, making her speech and injury central to legal reform.
A website summary cannot calculate expiation, adjudicate a marriage, or replace qualified support.
Divine knowledge of private conversation teaches accountability but does not authorize spying.
Secret counsel is criticized when used for sin, aggression, and disobedience, while beneficial counsel remains possible.
