Do you have among those whom your right hands possess [i.e., slaves] any partners in what We have provided for you so that you are equal therein [and] would fear them as your fear of one another [within a partnership]?1144 Thus do We detail the verses for a people who use reason.

So direct your face [i.e., self] toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fiṭrah1145 of Allāh upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allāh.1146 That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

  1. [1145] The natural inborn inclination of man to worship his Creator prior to the corruption of his nature by external influences. Thus, Islāmic monotheism is described as the religion of fiṭrah - that of the inherent nature of mankind.
  2. [1146] i.e., let people remain true to their fiṭrah within the religion of Islām.

  1. [1149] The phrase includes several connotations, among them: a) that which is given as usury or interest, b) that which is given on the condition that it be repaid with interest, and c) a gift given with the intention of obtaining from the recipient greater benefit or a larger gift.

About This Surah

Surah Ar-Rum moves from a reversal in the Roman-Persian conflict to signs in creation, marriage, language, color, sleep, rain, trade, and history. It teaches that political fortunes change while resurrection and divine promise remain. The marriage verse describes affection and mercy as signs, not a guarantee that every relationship is safe or permanent. Economic and natural signs likewise resist fortune-telling and prosperity marketing.

Ar-Rum opens with the Romans’ defeat and a promised reversal within a limited span, reminding readers that political dominance changes under divine governance. The passage concerns a named historical reversal; it is not a reusable code for predicting elections, wars, market prices, or dates.

The surah asks people to reflect within themselves and upon creation with purpose and a fixed term. Ruins of stronger communities expose the fragility of worldly power. Resurrection then separates those who responded faithfully from those who denied.

Among the signs are human creation, spouses, affection and mercy, languages and colors, sleep, work, lightning, rain, and the standing of heaven and earth. The marriage passage describes a divine sign and ethical goods. It must not be used to pressure people to remain in violence, deny incompatibility, promise a spouse through recitation, or imply that unmarried people lack divine favor. Diversity of language and color is itself a sign and cannot support racial superiority.

The chapter condemns interest-based gain that seeks increase through people’s wealth and praises giving intended for God. Applying financial rules to a transaction requires qualified guidance; a summary cannot issue a personalized ruling. Corruption on land and sea is connected to human action, but particular disasters should not be confidently declared punishment upon specific victims.

The final movement compares revived earth with resurrection and tells the Messenger to remain patient. Divine promise is sure, yet patience does not mean passivity before abuse or refusal of practical action.

Core Themes

  • Changing political fortunes
  • Creation with purpose and resurrection
  • Affection and mercy as marital signs
  • Linguistic and human diversity
  • Economic ethics beyond apparent increase
  • Patience without fatalism

Structure

Verses 1–10: Roman reversal and historical reflection1-10

A named geopolitical reversal, divine promise, purposeful creation, ruins, and the fate of rejecters challenge confidence in current power. Its place in the surah controls responsible later application.

Verses 11–27: resurrection and signs in human life11-27

Creation, return, final separation, daily worship, human origin, spouses, affection, mercy, language, color, sleep, work, lightning, and rain become signs.

Verses 28–40: monotheism, human nature, and economic ethics28-40

A parable of ownership, upright orientation, human instability, relatives and the poor, interest-based increase, charity, creation, and provision connect worship to wealth.

Verses 41–53: corruption, consequence, and revived earth41-53

Human-caused corruption, travel through history, final division, winds, clouds, rain, and revived land join moral action to resurrection without licensing disaster blame.

Verses 54–60: human weakness and patient certainty54-60

Creation through weakness, strength, and age, distorted perceptions of time, sealed rejection, and patient trust complete the chapter. Its place in the surah controls responsible later application.

Reading Guide

Keep the Roman prediction historical

Do not repurpose the opening as a numerological system for modern wars, elections, investments, or end-times dates. Keep the cited context and stated safety limits visible.

Read marriage language with safety boundaries

Affection and mercy are ethical signs, not commands to remain in abuse or proof that every marriage will succeed without care and accountability.

Honor language and color as signs

The diversity verse undermines racial and linguistic superiority. Avoid turning one culture, ethnicity, or language into a spiritual hierarchy. Keep the cited context and stated safety limits visible.

Do not declare disasters punishment

Human action can produce corruption, but a reader cannot confidently identify every flood, fire, epidemic, or loss as God’s verdict on specific victims.

Key Passages

Roman defeat and reversal 2-7

The opening names a historical loss and future reversal within a limited span. Its lesson concerns changing power and divine promise, not a general calculation tool for current events. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Human, marital, and natural signs 20-25

Human origin, spouses, affection, mercy, languages, colors, sleep, work, lightning, rain, and cosmic order appear together, preventing one social verse from being isolated as a complete marriage policy. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Upright orientation and division 30-32

The passage calls toward an upright orientation to God and warns against fragmentation and self-satisfied factions. It does not justify coercing belief or erasing legitimate interpretive differences. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Relatives, the poor, and false increase 38-40

Giving rights to relatives, poor people, and travelers is contrasted with increase sought through others’ wealth. Specific financial application requires qualified legal and contractual analysis. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Corruption, history, and winds 41-46

Human action is linked to corruption on land and sea, followed by travel, historical reflection, and winds bringing rain. The passage calls for responsibility, not victim blaming after disaster. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Recitation Note

No exclusive time, fixed repetition count, or guaranteed worldly outcome is asserted here for reciting Surah Ar-Rum. Reading it is worship and study; any separate claim about protection, healing, marriage, children, provision, or success requires independently verified evidence and narrow wording.

Interpretation Limits

  • The Roman prediction is not a numerological tool for current wars, politics, markets, or dates.
  • Marriage signs do not require remaining in abuse or guarantee marriage and fertility.
  • Financial verses do not replace qualified review of a specific transaction.
  • Disasters must not be confidently labeled divine punishment upon identified victims.
