Surah Ya-Sin Verses 51–83

51

وَنُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَنسِلُونَ

And the Horn will be blown;1274 and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.

  1. [1274] For the second time, signaling the Resurrection.

وَنُفِخَAnd will be blownwanufikha
فِى[in]
ٱلصُّورِthe trumpetl-ṣūri
فَإِذَاand beholdfa-idhā
هُمTheyhum
مِّنَfrommina
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِthe gravesl-ajdāthi
إِلَىٰtoilā
رَبِّهِمْtheir Lordrabbihim
يَنسِلُونَ[they] will hastenyansilūna
52

قَالُوا۟ يَٰوَيْلَنَا مَنۢ بَعَثَنَا مِن مَّرْقَدِنَا ۜ ۗ هَٰذَا مَا وَعَدَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وَصَدَقَ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

They will say, "O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?" [The reply will be], "This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth."

يَٰوَيْلَنَاO woe to usyāwaylanā
مَنۢWhoman
بَعَثَنَاhas raised usbaʿathanā
مِنfrommin
مَّرْقَدِنَاour sleeping placemarqadinā
هَٰذَاThis (is)
مَاWhatma
وَعَدَ(had) promisedwa'ada
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُthe Most Graciousl-raḥmānu
وَصَدَقَand told (the) truthwaṣadaqa
ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَthe Messengersal-mur'saluna
53

إِن كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ فَإِذَا هُمْ جَمِيعٌۭ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ

It will not be but one blast, and at once they are all brought present before Us.

وَٰحِدَةًۭsinglewāḥidatan
فَإِذَاso beholdfa-idhā

لَّدَيْنَاbefore Usladaynā
مُحْضَرُونَ(will be) broughtmuḥ'ḍarūna
54

فَٱلْيَوْمَ لَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌۭ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

So today [i.e., the Day of Judgement] no soul will be wronged at all, and you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do.

فَٱلْيَوْمَSo this Dayfal-yawma

تُظْلَمُwill be wrongedtuẓ'lamu
نَفْسٌۭa soulnafsun
شَيْـًۭٔا(in) anythingshayan
وَلَاand notwalā
تُجْزَوْنَyou will be recompensedtuj'zawna
إِلَّاexceptillā
مَا(for) what
كُنتُمْyou used (to)kuntum
تَعْمَلُونَdotaʿmalūna
55

إِنَّ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ٱلْيَوْمَ فِى شُغُلٍۢ فَٰكِهُونَ

Indeed the companions of Paradise, that Day, will be amused in [joyful] occupation -

إِنَّIndeedinna
أَصْحَٰبَ(the) companionsaṣḥāba
ٱلْجَنَّةِ(of) Paradisel-janati
ٱلْيَوْمَthis Dayl-yawma
فِى[in]
شُغُلٍۢwill be occupiedshughulin
فَٰكِهُونَ(in) amusementfākihūna
56

هُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُهُمْ فِى ظِلَٰلٍ عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ مُتَّكِـُٔونَ

They and their spouses - in shade, reclining on adorned couches.

فِىin
ظِلَٰلٍshadesẓilālin
عَلَىonʿalā
ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ[the] couchesl-arāiki
مُتَّكِـُٔونَrecliningmuttakiūna
57

لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَٰكِهَةٌۭ وَلَهُم مَّا يَدَّعُونَ

For them therein is fruit, and for them is whatever they request [or wish]

فَٰكِهَةٌۭ(are) fruitsfākihatun
وَلَهُمand for themwalahum
مَّا(is) whatever
يَدَّعُونَthey call foryaddaʿūna
58

سَلَٰمٌۭ قَوْلًۭا مِّن رَّبٍّۢ رَّحِيمٍۢ

[And] "Peace," a word from a Merciful Lord.

59

وَٱمْتَٰزُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ

[Then He will say], "But stand apart today, you criminals.1275

  1. [1275] i.e., remove yourself from the ranks of the believers to be distinguished from them.

وَٱمْتَٰزُوا۟But stand apartwa-im'tāzū
ٱلْيَوْمَtodayl-yawma
أَيُّهَاO criminalsayyuhā
ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَO criminalsl-muj'rimūna
60

۞ أَلَمْ أَعْهَدْ إِلَيْكُمْ يَٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُوا۟ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنَ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you not worship Satan - [for] indeed, he is to you a clear enemy -

أَعْهَدْI enjoinaʿhad
إِلَيْكُمْupon youilaykum
يَٰبَنِىٓO Children of Adamyābanī
ءَادَمَO Children of Adamādama
أَنThatan
لَّا(do) not
تَعْبُدُوا۟worshiptaʿbudū
ٱلشَّيْطَٰنَthe Shaitaanl-shayṭāna
إِنَّهُۥindeed, heinnahu
لَكُمْ(is) for youlakum
عَدُوٌّۭan enemyʿaduwwun
مُّبِينٌۭclearmubīnun
61

وَأَنِ ٱعْبُدُونِى ۚ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌۭ مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ

And that you worship [only] Me? This is a straight path.

وَأَنِAnd thatwa-ani
ٱعْبُدُونِىyou worship Meuʿ'budūnī
هَٰذَاThishādhā
صِرَٰطٌۭ(is) a Pathṣirāṭun
مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭStraightmus'taqīmun
62

وَلَقَدْ أَضَلَّ مِنكُمْ جِبِلًّۭا كَثِيرًا ۖ أَفَلَمْ تَكُونُوا۟ تَعْقِلُونَ

And he had already led astray from among you much of creation, so did you not use reason?

وَلَقَدْAnd indeedwalaqad
أَضَلَّhe led astrayaḍalla
مِنكُمْfrom youminkum
جِبِلًّۭاa multitudejibillan
كَثِيرًاgreatkathīran
أَفَلَمْThen did notafalam
تَكُونُوا۟youtakūnū
تَعْقِلُونَuse reasontaʿqilūna
63

هَٰذِهِۦ جَهَنَّمُ ٱلَّتِى كُنتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ

This is the Hellfire which you were promised.

هَٰذِهِۦThis (is)hādhihi
جَهَنَّمُ(the) Helljahannamu
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
كُنتُمْyou werekuntum
تُوعَدُونَpromisedtūʿadūna
64

ٱصْلَوْهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

[Enter to] burn therein today for what you used to deny."1276

  1. [1276] Or "because you used to disbelieve."

تَكْفُرُونَdisbelievetakfurūna
65

ٱلْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَىٰٓ أَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَآ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْجُلُهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn.

ٱلْيَوْمَThis Dayal-yawma
نَخْتِمُWe will sealnakhtimu
عَلَىٰٓ[on]ʿalā
أَفْوَٰهِهِمْtheir mouthsafwāhihim
وَتُكَلِّمُنَآand will speak to Uswatukallimunā
أَيْدِيهِمْtheir handsaydīhim
وَتَشْهَدُand will bear witnesswatashhadu
أَرْجُلُهُمtheir feetarjuluhum
بِمَاabout whatbimā
كَانُوا۟they used tokānū
يَكْسِبُونَearnyaksibūna
66

وَلَوْ نَشَآءُ لَطَمَسْنَا عَلَىٰٓ أَعْيُنِهِمْ فَٱسْتَبَقُوا۟ ٱلصِّرَٰطَ فَأَنَّىٰ يُبْصِرُونَ

And if We willed, We could have obliterated their eyes, and they would race to [find] the path, and how could they see?1277

  1. [1277] Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) could have left man without means of guidance in the life of this world, although in His mercy He did not.

وَلَوْAnd ifwalaw
نَشَآءُWe willednashāu
لَطَمَسْنَاWe (would have) surely obliteratedlaṭamasnā
عَلَىٰٓ[over]ʿalā
أَعْيُنِهِمْtheir eyesaʿyunihim
فَٱسْتَبَقُوا۟then they (would) racefa-is'tabaqū
ٱلصِّرَٰطَ(to find) the pathl-ṣirāṭa
فَأَنَّىٰthen howfa-annā
يُبْصِرُونَ(could) they seeyub'ṣirūna
67

وَلَوْ نَشَآءُ لَمَسَخْنَٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِهِمْ فَمَا ٱسْتَطَٰعُوا۟ مُضِيًّۭا وَلَا يَرْجِعُونَ

And if We willed, We could have deformed them, [paralyzing them] in their places so they would not be able to proceed, nor could they return.1278

  1. [1278] He (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) could have prevented man from taking any action to benefit himself in this world or the Hereafter, yet He did not.

وَلَوْAnd ifwalaw
نَشَآءُWe willednashāu
لَمَسَخْنَٰهُمْsurely, We (would have) transformed themlamasakhnāhum
عَلَىٰinʿalā
مَكَانَتِهِمْtheir placesmakānatihim
فَمَاthen notfamā
ٱسْتَطَٰعُوا۟they would have been ableis'taṭāʿū
مُضِيًّۭاto proceedmuḍiyyan
وَلَاand notwalā
يَرْجِعُونَreturnyarjiʿūna
68

وَمَن نُّعَمِّرْهُ نُنَكِّسْهُ فِى ٱلْخَلْقِ ۖ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ

And he to whom We grant long life We reverse in creation;1279 so will they not understand?

  1. [1279] In his physical and mental capacity.

نُّعَمِّرْهُWe grant him long lifenuʿammir'hu
نُنَكِّسْهُWe reverse himnunakkis'hu
فِىin
ٱلْخَلْقِthe creationl-khalqi
أَفَلَاThen will notafalā
يَعْقِلُونَthey use intellectyaʿqilūna
69

وَمَا عَلَّمْنَٰهُ ٱلشِّعْرَ وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ وَقُرْءَانٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

And We did not give him [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for him. It is not but a message and a clear Qur’ān

عَلَّمْنَٰهُWe taught himʿallamnāhu
ٱلشِّعْرَ[the] poetryl-shiʿ'ra
وَمَاand notwamā
يَنۢبَغِىit is befittingyanbaghī
لَهُۥٓfor himlahu
إِنْNotin
هُوَithuwa
إِلَّا(is) exceptillā
ذِكْرٌۭa Reminderdhik'run
وَقُرْءَانٌۭand a Quranwaqur'ānun
مُّبِينٌۭclearmubīnun
70

لِّيُنذِرَ مَن كَانَ حَيًّۭا وَيَحِقَّ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

To warn whoever is alive1280 and justify the word [i.e., decree] against the disbelievers.

  1. [1280] In heart and mind, i.e., the believers.

وَيَحِقَّand may be proved truewayaḥiqqa
ٱلْقَوْلُthe Wordl-qawlu

ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَthe disbelieversl-kāfirīna
71

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَا لَهُم مِّمَّا عَمِلَتْ أَيْدِينَآ أَنْعَٰمًۭا فَهُمْ لَهَا مَٰلِكُونَ

Do they not see that We have created for them from what Our hands1281 have made, grazing livestock, and [then] they are their owners?

  1. [1281] See footnote to 2:19.

يَرَوْا۟they seeyaraw
أَنَّاthat Weannā
خَلَقْنَا[We] createdkhalaqnā

أَيْدِينَآOur handsaydīnā
أَنْعَٰمًۭاcattleanʿāman
فَهُمْthen theyfahum
لَهَا[for them]lahā
مَٰلِكُونَ(are the) ownersmālikūna
72

وَذَلَّلْنَٰهَا لَهُمْ فَمِنْهَا رَكُوبُهُمْ وَمِنْهَا يَأْكُلُونَ

And We have tamed them for them, so some of them they ride, and some of them they eat.

وَذَلَّلْنَٰهَاAnd We have tamed themwadhallalnāhā
لَهُمْfor themlahum
فَمِنْهَاso some of themfamin'hā
رَكُوبُهُمْthey ride themrakūbuhum
وَمِنْهَاand some of themwamin'hā
يَأْكُلُونَthey eatyakulūna
73

وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا مَنَٰفِعُ وَمَشَارِبُ ۖ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ

And for them therein are [other] benefits and drinks, so will they not be grateful?

وَلَهُمْAnd for themwalahum
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
مَنَٰفِعُ(are) benefitsmanāfiʿu
وَمَشَارِبُand drinkswamashāribu
أَفَلَاso (will) notafalā
يَشْكُرُونَthey give thanksyashkurūna
74

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةًۭ لَّعَلَّهُمْ يُنصَرُونَ

But they have taken besides Allāh [false] deities that perhaps they would be helped.

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟But they have takenwa-ittakhadhū
مِنbesidesmin
دُونِbesidesdūni
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
ءَالِهَةًۭgodsālihatan
لَّعَلَّهُمْthat they maylaʿallahum
يُنصَرُونَbe helpedyunṣarūna
75

لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُمْ جُندٌۭ مُّحْضَرُونَ

They are not able to help them, and they [themselves] are for them soldiers in attendance.1282

  1. [1282] Maintaining and protecting their "gods." Another interpretation is that they (i.e., the gods) will be soldiers set against them in Hellfire.

76

فَلَا يَحْزُنكَ قَوْلُهُمْ ۘ إِنَّا نَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ

So let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, We know what they conceal and what they declare.

إِنَّاIndeed, Weinnā
نَعْلَمُ[We] knownaʿlamu

وَمَاand whatwamā
يُعْلِنُونَthey declareyuʿ'linūna
77

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَٰهُ مِن نُّطْفَةٍۢ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيمٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

Does man not consider that We created him from a [mere] sperm-drop - then at once1283 he is a clear adversary?

  1. [1283] i.e., as soon as he becomes self-sufficient.

ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ[the] manl-insānu
أَنَّاthat Weannā
خَلَقْنَٰهُ[We] created himkhalaqnāhu
مِنfrommin
نُّطْفَةٍۢa semen-dropnuṭ'fatin
فَإِذَاThen beholdfa-idhā
هُوَHehuwa
خَصِيمٌۭ(is) an opponentkhaṣīmun
مُّبِينٌۭclearmubīnun
78

وَضَرَبَ لَنَا مَثَلًۭا وَنَسِىَ خَلْقَهُۥ ۖ قَالَ مَن يُحْىِ ٱلْعِظَٰمَ وَهِىَ رَمِيمٌۭ

And he presents for Us an example1284 and forgets his [own] creation. He says, "Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?"

  1. [1284] Attempting to establish the finality of death.

وَضَرَبَAnd he sets forthwaḍaraba
لَنَاfor Uslanā
مَثَلًۭاan examplemathalan
وَنَسِىَand forgetswanasiya
خَلْقَهُۥhis (own) creationkhalqahu
قَالَHe saysqāla
مَنWhoman
يُحْىِwill give lifeyuḥ'yī
ٱلْعِظَٰمَ(to) the bonesl-ʿiẓāma
وَهِىَwhile theywahiya
رَمِيمٌۭ(are) decomposedramīmun
79

قُلْ يُحْيِيهَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَهَآ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۢ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ خَلْقٍ عَلِيمٌ

Say, "He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing."

عَلِيمٌAll-Knowerʿalīmun
80

ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ ٱلْأَخْضَرِ نَارًۭا فَإِذَآ أَنتُم مِّنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ

[It is] He who made for you from the green tree, fire, and then from it you ignite.

مِّنْهُfrom itmin'hu
تُوقِدُونَignitetūqidūna
81

أَوَلَيْسَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُم ۚ بَلَىٰ وَهُوَ ٱلْخَلَّٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator.

أَوَلَيْسَIs it notawalaysa
ٱلَّذِى(He) Whoalladhī
خَلَقَcreatedkhalaqa
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضَand the earthwal-arḍa
بِقَٰدِرٍAblebiqādirin
عَلَىٰٓtoʿalā
أَن[that]an
يَخْلُقَcreateyakhluqa
مِثْلَهُم(the) like of themmith'lahum
بَلَىٰYes, indeedbalā
وَهُوَand Hewahuwa
ٱلْخَلَّٰقُ(is) the Supreme Creatorl-khalāqu
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knowerl-ʿalīmu
82

إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُۥٓ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْـًٔا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ

His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is.

83

فَسُبْحَٰنَ ٱلَّذِى بِيَدِهِۦ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

So exalted is He in whose hand is the realm of all things, and to Him you will be returned.

ٱلَّذِى(to) the One whoalladhī

مَلَكُوتُis (the) dominionmalakūtu

وَإِلَيْهِand to Himwa-ilayhi
تُرْجَعُونَyou will be returnedtur'jaʿūna
