Surah Al-Mu'minun Verses 101–118

101

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَلَآ أَنسَابَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ وَلَا يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.

فَإِذَاSo whenfa-idhā
نُفِخَis blownnufikha
فِىin
ٱلصُّورِthe trumpetl-ṣūri
فَلَآthen notfalā
أَنسَابَ(there) will be relationshipansāba
بَيْنَهُمْamong thembaynahum
يَوْمَئِذٍۢthat Dayyawma-idhin
وَلَاand notwalā
يَتَسَآءَلُونَwill they ask each otheryatasāalūna
102

فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful.

فَمَنThen (the one) whosefaman
ثَقُلَتْ(are) heavythaqulat
مَوَٰزِينُهُۥhis scalesmawāzīnuhu
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāika
هُمُtheyhumu
ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ(are) the successfull-muf'liḥūna
103

وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ فِى جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدُونَ

But those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally.

وَمَنْBut (the one) whosewaman
خَفَّتْ(are) lightkhaffat
مَوَٰزِينُهُۥhis scalesmawāzīnuhu
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَthen thosefa-ulāika
ٱلَّذِينَthey [who]alladhīna
خَسِرُوٓا۟have lostkhasirū
أَنفُسَهُمْtheir soulsanfusahum
فِىin
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannama
خَٰلِدُونَthey (will) abide foreverkhālidūna
104

تَلْفَحُ وُجُوهَهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَهُمْ فِيهَا كَٰلِحُونَ

The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles.968

  1. [968] Their lips having been contracted by scorching until the teeth are exposed.

وُجُوهَهُمُtheir faceswujūhahumu
ٱلنَّارُthe Firel-nāru
وَهُمْand theywahum
فِيهَاin itfīhā
كَٰلِحُونَ(will) grin with displaced lipskāliḥūna
105

أَلَمْ تَكُنْ ءَايَٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ

[It will be said], "Were not My verses recited to you and you used to deny them?"

أَلَمْWere notalam
تَكُنْWere nottakun
ءَايَٰتِىMy Versesāyātī
تُتْلَىٰrecitedtut'lā
عَلَيْكُمْto youʿalaykum
فَكُنتُمand you used (to)fakuntum
بِهَاdeny thembihā
تُكَذِّبُونَdeny themtukadhibūna
106

قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْمًۭا ضَآلِّينَ

They will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray.

قَالُوا۟They (will) sayqālū
رَبَّنَاOur Lordrabbanā
غَلَبَتْOvercameghalabat
عَلَيْنَا[on] usʿalaynā
شِقْوَتُنَاour wretchednessshiq'watunā
وَكُنَّاand we werewakunnā
قَوْمًۭاa peopleqawman
ضَآلِّينَastrayḍāllīna
107

رَبَّنَآ أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَٰلِمُونَ

Our Lord, remove us from it, and if we were to return [to evil], we would indeed be wrongdoers."

رَبَّنَآOur Lordrabbanā
أَخْرِجْنَاBring us outakhrij'nā
مِنْهَاfrom itmin'hā
فَإِنْthen iffa-in
عُدْنَاwe returnʿud'nā
فَإِنَّاthen indeed, wefa-innā
ظَٰلِمُونَ(would be) wrongdoersẓālimūna
108

قَالَ ٱخْسَـُٔوا۟ فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ

He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.

ٱخْسَـُٔوا۟Remain despisedikh'saū
فِيهَاin itfīhā
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
تُكَلِّمُونِspeak to Metukallimūni
109

إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنْ عِبَادِى يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Indeed, there was a party of My servants who said, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.'

إِنَّهُۥIndeedinnahu
كَانَ(there) waskāna
فَرِيقٌۭa partyfarīqun
مِّنْofmin
عِبَادِىMy slavesʿibādī
يَقُولُونَ(who) saidyaqūlūna
رَبَّنَآOur Lordrabbanā
ءَامَنَّاWe believeāmannā
فَٱغْفِرْso forgivefa-igh'fir
لَنَاuslanā
وَٱرْحَمْنَاand have mercy on uswa-ir'ḥamnā
وَأَنتَand Youwa-anta
خَيْرُ(are) bestkhayru
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ(of) those who show mercyl-rāḥimīna
110

فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا حَتَّىٰٓ أَنسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِى وَكُنتُم مِّنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ

But you took them in mockery to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.

فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْBut you took themfa-ittakhadhtumūhum
سِخْرِيًّا(in) mockerysikh'riyyan
حَتَّىٰٓuntilḥattā
أَنسَوْكُمْthey made you forgetansawkum
ذِكْرِىMy remembrancedhik'rī
وَكُنتُمand you used (to)wakuntum
مِّنْهُمْat themmin'hum
تَضْحَكُونَlaughtaḍḥakūna
111

إِنِّى جَزَيْتُهُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ

Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance - that they are the attainers [of success]."

إِنِّىIndeed, Iinnī
جَزَيْتُهُمُhave rewarded themjazaytuhumu
ٱلْيَوْمَthis Dayl-yawma
بِمَاbecausebimā
صَبَرُوٓا۟they were patientṣabarū
أَنَّهُمْindeed, theyannahum
هُمُ[they]humu
ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ(are) the successful onesl-fāizūna
112

قَٰلَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ

[Allāh] will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?"

قَٰلَHe will sayqāla
كَمْHow longkam
لَبِثْتُمْdid you remainlabith'tum
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
عَدَدَ(in) numberʿadada
سِنِينَ(of) yearssinīna
113

قَالُوا۟ لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍۢ فَسْـَٔلِ ٱلْعَآدِّينَ

They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate."

يَوْمًاa dayyawman
أَوْoraw
بَعْضَa partbaʿḍa
يَوْمٍۢ(of) a dayyawmin
فَسْـَٔلِbut askfasali
ٱلْعَآدِّينَthose who keep countl-ʿādīna
114

قَٰلَ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا ۖ لَّوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

He will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known.

لَّبِثْتُمْyou stayedlabith'tum
إِلَّاbutillā
قَلِيلًۭاa littleqalīlan
لَّوْiflaw
أَنَّكُمْonly youannakum
كُنتُمْ[you]kuntum
تَعْلَمُونَknewtaʿlamūna
115

أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ عَبَثًۭا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"

Word by Word
أَفَحَسِبْتُمْThen did you thinkafaḥasib'tum
أَنَّمَاthatannamā
خَلَقْنَٰكُمْWe created youkhalaqnākum
عَبَثًۭاuselesslyʿabathan
وَأَنَّكُمْand that youwa-annakum
إِلَيْنَاto Usilaynā
لَاnot
تُرْجَعُونَwill be returnedtur'jaʿūna
116

فَتَعَٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْكَرِيمِ

So exalted is Allāh, the Sovereign,969 the Truth;970 there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.

  1. [969] And owner of everything in existence.
  2. [970] Or "the True Reality."

فَتَعَٰلَىSo exalted isfataʿālā
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
ٱلْمَلِكُthe Kingl-maliku
ٱلْحَقُّthe Truthl-ḥaqu
لَآ(There is) no
إِلَٰهَgodilāha
إِلَّاexceptillā
هُوَHimhuwa
رَبُّ(the) Lordrabbu
ٱلْعَرْشِ(of) the Thronel-ʿarshi
ٱلْكَرِيمِHonorablel-karīmi
117

وَمَن يَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ لَا بُرْهَٰنَ لَهُۥ بِهِۦ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ

And whoever invokes besides Allāh another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.

مَعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
إِلَٰهًاgodilāhan
ءَاخَرَotherākhara
لَاno
بُرْهَٰنَproofbur'hāna
لَهُۥfor himlahu
بِهِۦin itbihi
فَإِنَّمَاThen onlyfa-innamā
حِسَابُهُۥhis accountḥisābuhu
عِندَ(is) withʿinda
رَبِّهِۦٓhis Lordrabbihi
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, [he]innahu
لَاnot
يُفْلِحُwill succeedyuf'liḥu
ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَthe disbelieversl-kāfirūna
118

وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ وَٱرْحَمْ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

And, [O Muḥammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful."

وَٱرْحَمْand have mercywa-ir'ḥam
وَأَنتَand Youwa-anta
خَيْرُ(are the) Bestkhayru
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ(of) those who show mercyl-rāḥimīna
