Surah Al-Mu'minun Verses 51–100

51

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلرُّسُلُ كُلُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ وَٱعْمَلُوا۟ صَٰلِحًا ۖ إِنِّى بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌۭ

[Allāh said], "O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed I, of what you do, am Knowing.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَاO Messengersyāayyuhā
ٱلرُّسُلُO Messengersl-rusulu
كُلُوا۟Eatkulū
مِنَofmina
ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِthe good thingsl-ṭayibāti
وَٱعْمَلُوا۟and dowa-iʿ'malū
صَٰلِحًاrighteous (deeds)ṣāliḥan
إِنِّىIndeed, I Aminnī
بِمَاof whatbimā
تَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūna
عَلِيمٌۭAll-Knowerʿalīmun
52

وَإِنَّ هَٰذِهِۦٓ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ وَأَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمْ فَٱتَّقُونِ

And indeed this, your religion, is one religion,959 and I am your Lord, so fear Me."

وَأَنَا۠And I Amwa-anā
رَبُّكُمْyour Lordrabbukum
فَٱتَّقُونِso fear Mefa-ittaqūni
53

فَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُم بَيْنَهُمْ زُبُرًۭا ۖ كُلُّ حِزْبٍۭ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ

But they [i.e., the people] divided their religion among them into portions [i.e., sects] - each faction, in what it has,960 rejoicing.

  1. [960] Of beliefs, opinions, customs, etc.

فَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟But they cut offfataqaṭṭaʿū
أَمْرَهُمtheir affair (of unity)amrahum
بَيْنَهُمْbetween thembaynahum
زُبُرًۭا(into) sectszuburan

حِزْبٍۭfactionḥiz'bin
بِمَاin whatbimā
لَدَيْهِمْthey haveladayhim
فَرِحُونَrejoicingfariḥūna
54

فَذَرْهُمْ فِى غَمْرَتِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ

So leave them in their confusion for a time.

55

أَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُم بِهِۦ مِن مَّالٍۢ وَبَنِينَ

Do they think that what We extend to them of wealth and children

أَنَّمَاthat whatannamā
نُمِدُّهُمWe extend to themnumidduhum
بِهِۦ[with it]bihi
مِنofmin
مَّالٍۢwealthmālin
وَبَنِينَand childrenwabanīna
56

نُسَارِعُ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ ۚ بَل لَّا يَشْعُرُونَ

Is [because] We hasten for them good things? Rather, they do not perceive.961

  1. [961] That the good things given to them in this world are but a trial for them.

57

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ خَشْيَةِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ

Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord

رَبِّهِم(of) their Lordrabbihim

58

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ يُؤْمِنُونَ

And they who believe in the signs of their Lord

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd thosewa-alladhīna
هُم[they]hum
بِـَٔايَٰتِin (the) Signsbiāyāti
رَبِّهِمْ(of) their Lordrabbihim
يُؤْمِنُونَbelieveyu'minūna
59

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِرَبِّهِمْ لَا يُشْرِكُونَ

And they who do not associate anything with their Lord

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd thosewa-alladhīna
هُم[they]hum
بِرَبِّهِمْwith their Lordbirabbihim
لَا(do) not
يُشْرِكُونَassociate partnersyush'rikūna
60

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَآ ءَاتَوا۟ وَّقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَٰجِعُونَ

And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful962 because they will be returning to their Lord -

  1. [962] Lest their deeds not be acceptable.

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna

ءَاتَوا۟they giveātaw
وَّقُلُوبُهُمْwhile their heartswaqulūbuhum
وَجِلَةٌ(are) fearfulwajilatun
أَنَّهُمْbecause theyannahum
إِلَىٰtoilā
رَبِّهِمْtheir Lordrabbihim
رَٰجِعُونَ(will) returnrājiʿūna
61

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يُسَٰرِعُونَ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَٰبِقُونَ

It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.

ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِthe good (deeds)l-khayrāti
وَهُمْand theywahum

سَٰبِقُونَ(are) foremostsābiqūna
62

وَلَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۖ وَلَدَيْنَا كِتَٰبٌۭ يَنطِقُ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ

And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.

نُكَلِّفُWe burdennukallifu
نَفْسًاany soulnafsan
إِلَّاexceptillā
وُسْعَهَا(to) its capacitywus'ʿahā
وَلَدَيْنَاand with Uswaladaynā
كِتَٰبٌۭ(is) a Recordkitābun
يَنطِقُ(which) speaksyanṭiqu
بِٱلْحَقِّwith the truthbil-ḥaqi
وَهُمْand theywahum
لَا(will) not
يُظْلَمُونَbe wrongedyuẓ'lamūna
63

بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍۢ مِّنْ هَٰذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَٰلٌۭ مِّن دُونِ ذَٰلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَٰمِلُونَ

But their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides that [i.e., disbelief] which they are doing,

ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
هُمْtheyhum
لَهَاfor itlahā
عَٰمِلُونَ(are) doersʿāmilūna
64

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِم بِٱلْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْـَٔرُونَ

Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment,963 at once they are crying [to Allāh] for help.

  1. [963] In worldly life, before the punishment of the Hereafter. Although general, the description includes specifically the punishment of the Quraysh by famine.

65

لَا تَجْـَٔرُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ إِنَّكُم مِّنَّا لَا تُنصَرُونَ

Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped.

66

قَدْ كَانَتْ ءَايَٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْقَٰبِكُمْ تَنكِصُونَ

My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels

تُتْلَىٰrecitedtut'lā
عَلَيْكُمْto youʿalaykum
فَكُنتُمْbut you usedfakuntum
عَلَىٰٓ(to) onʿalā
أَعْقَٰبِكُمْyour heelsaʿqābikum
تَنكِصُونَturn backtankiṣūna
67

مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِۦ سَٰمِرًۭا تَهْجُرُونَ

In arrogance regarding it,964 conversing by night, speaking evil.

  1. [964] The revelation. Or "him," i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ).

تَهْجُرُونَspeaking eviltahjurūna
68

أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا۟ ٱلْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَآءَهُم مَّا لَمْ يَأْتِ ءَابَآءَهُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Then have they not reflected over the word [i.e., the Qur’ān], or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?

يَدَّبَّرُوا۟they ponderyaddabbarū
ٱلْقَوْلَthe Wordl-qawla
أَمْoram
جَآءَهُمhas come to themjāahum

ءَابَآءَهُمُ(to) their forefathersābāahumu
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(to) their forefathersl-awalīna
69

أَمْ لَمْ يَعْرِفُوا۟ رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ

Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?

فَهُمْso theyfahum
لَهُۥ(are) rejecting himlahu
مُنكِرُونَ(are) rejecting himmunkirūna
70

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ بِهِۦ جِنَّةٌۢ ۚ بَلْ جَآءَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَٰرِهُونَ

Or do they say, "In him is madness"? Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse.

لِلْحَقِّto the truthlil'ḥaqqi
كَٰرِهُونَ(are) aversekārihūna
71

وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلْحَقُّ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ ۚ بَلْ أَتَيْنَٰهُم بِذِكْرِهِمْ فَهُمْ عَن ذِكْرِهِم مُّعْرِضُونَ

But if the Truth [i.e., Allāh] had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message,965 but they, from their message, are turning away.

  1. [965] Or "reminder."

ٱتَّبَعَ(had) followedittabaʿa
ٱلْحَقُّthe truthl-ḥaqu
أَهْوَآءَهُمْtheir desiresahwāahum
لَفَسَدَتِsurely (would) have been corruptedlafasadati
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُthe heavensl-samāwātu
وَٱلْأَرْضُand the earthwal-arḍu
وَمَنand whoeverwaman
فِيهِنَّ(is) thereinfīhinna
بَلْNaybal
أَتَيْنَٰهُمWe have brought themataynāhum
بِذِكْرِهِمْtheir reminderbidhik'rihim
فَهُمْbut theyfahum
عَنfromʿan
ذِكْرِهِمtheir reminderdhik'rihim
مُّعْرِضُونَ(are) turning awaymuʿ'riḍūna
72

أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ خَرْجًۭا فَخَرَاجُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌۭ ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ

Or do you, [O Muḥammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers.

خَرْجًۭا(for) a paymentkharjan
فَخَرَاجُBut the paymentfakharāju
رَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbika
خَيْرٌۭ(is) bestkhayrun
وَهُوَand Hewahuwa
خَيْرُ(is) the Bestkhayru
ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ(of) the Providersl-rāziqīna
73

وَإِنَّكَ لَتَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍۢ مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ

And indeed, you invite them to a straight path.

وَإِنَّكَAnd indeed, youwa-innaka
لَتَدْعُوهُمْcertainly call themlatadʿūhum
إِلَىٰtoilā
صِرَٰطٍۢ(the) Pathṣirāṭin
مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢStraightmus'taqīmin
74

وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ عَنِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ لَنَٰكِبُونَ

But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.

يُؤْمِنُونَbelieveyu'minūna
بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِin the Hereafterbil-ākhirati
عَنِfromʿani
ٱلصِّرَٰطِthe pathl-ṣirāṭi
لَنَٰكِبُونَsurely (are) deviatinglanākibūna
75

۞ وَلَوْ رَحِمْنَٰهُمْ وَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِم مِّن ضُرٍّۢ لَّلَجُّوا۟ فِى طُغْيَٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ

And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.

وَلَوْAnd ifwalaw
رَحِمْنَٰهُمْWe had mercy on themraḥim'nāhum
وَكَشَفْنَاand We removedwakashafnā
مَاwhat
بِهِم(was) on thembihim
مِّنofmin
ضُرٍّۢ(the) hardshipḍurrin
لَّلَجُّوا۟surely they would persistlalajjū
فِىin
طُغْيَٰنِهِمْtheir transgressionṭugh'yānihim
يَعْمَهُونَwandering blindlyyaʿmahūna
76

وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَٰهُم بِٱلْعَذَابِ فَمَا ٱسْتَكَانُوا۟ لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ

And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus]

وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqad
أَخَذْنَٰهُمWe seized themakhadhnāhum
بِٱلْعَذَابِwith the punishmentbil-ʿadhābi
فَمَاbut notfamā
ٱسْتَكَانُوا۟they submitis'takānū
لِرَبِّهِمْto their Lordlirabbihim
وَمَاand notwamā
يَتَضَرَّعُونَthey supplicate humblyyataḍarraʿūna
77

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًۭا ذَا عَذَابٍۢ شَدِيدٍ إِذَا هُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ

Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.

بَابًۭاa gatebāban
ذَاof a punishmentdhā

شَدِيدٍsevereshadīdin
إِذَاbeholdidhā
هُمْTheyhum
فِيهِin itfīhi
مُبْلِسُونَ(will be in) despairmub'lisūna
78

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ

And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful.

وَهُوَAnd Hewahuwa
ٱلَّذِىٓ(is) the One Whoalladhī
أَنشَأَproducedansha-a
لَكُمُfor youlakumu
ٱلسَّمْعَthe hearingl-samʿa
وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرَand the sightwal-abṣāra
وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَand the feelingwal-afidata
قَلِيلًۭاlittleqalīlan
مَّا(is) what
تَشْكُرُونَyou give thankstashkurūna
79

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى ذَرَأَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.

ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhī
ذَرَأَكُمْmultiplied youdhara-akum
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
وَإِلَيْهِand to Himwa-ilayhi
تُحْشَرُونَyou will be gatheredtuḥ'sharūna
80

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ وَلَهُ ٱخْتِلَٰفُ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?

ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhī
يُحْىِۦgives lifeyuḥ'yī
وَيُمِيتُand causes deathwayumītu
وَلَهُand for Himwalahu
ٱخْتِلَٰفُ(is the) alternationikh'tilāfu
ٱلَّيْلِ(of) the nightal-layli
وَٱلنَّهَارِand the daywal-nahāri
أَفَلَاThen will notafalā
تَعْقِلُونَyou reasontaʿqilūna
81

بَلْ قَالُوا۟ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

Rather,966 they say like what the former peoples said.

  1. [966] Instead of understanding or reasoning.

82

قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

They said, "When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālū
أَءِذَاWhat! Whena-idhā
مِتْنَاwe are deadmit'nā
وَكُنَّاand becomewakunnā
تُرَابًۭاdustturāban
وَعِظَٰمًاand boneswaʿiẓāman
أَءِنَّاwould wea-innā
لَمَبْعُوثُونَsurely be resurrectedlamabʿūthūna
83

لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَءَابَآؤُنَا هَٰذَا مِن قَبْلُ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples."

هَٰذَآ(is) thishādhā
إِلَّآbutillā
أَسَٰطِيرُ(the) talesasāṭīru
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)l-awalīna
84

قُل لِّمَنِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Say, [O Muḥammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?"

وَمَنand whoeverwaman
فِيهَآ(is) in itfīhā

85

سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

They will say, "To Allāh." Say, "Then will you not remember?"

لِلَّهِTo Allahlillahi
قُلْSayqul
أَفَلَاThen will notafalā
تَذَكَّرُونَyou remembertadhakkarūna
86

قُلْ مَن رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ ٱلسَّبْعِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?"

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the seven heavensl-samāwāti
ٱلسَّبْعِ(of) the seven heavensl-sabʿi
وَرَبُّand (the) Lordwarabbu
ٱلْعَرْشِ(of) the Thronel-ʿarshi
ٱلْعَظِيمِthe Greatl-ʿaẓīmi
87

سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

They will say, "[They belong] to Allāh." Say, "Then will you not fear Him?"

Word by Word
سَيَقُولُونَThey will saysayaqūlūna
لِلَّهِAllahlillahi
قُلْSayqul
أَفَلَاThen will notafalā
تَتَّقُونَyou fear (Him)tattaqūna
88

قُلْ مَنۢ بِيَدِهِۦ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ وَهُوَ يُجِيرُ وَلَا يُجَارُ عَلَيْهِ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Say, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?"

بِيَدِهِۦin Whose Hand (s)biyadihi
مَلَكُوتُ(is the) dominionmalakūtu

وَلَاand no (one)walā
يُجَارُ(can) be protectedyujāru
عَلَيْهِagainst Himʿalayhi
إِنIfin
كُنتُمْyoukuntum
تَعْلَمُونَknowtaʿlamūna
89

سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ ۚ قُلْ فَأَنَّىٰ تُسْحَرُونَ

They will say, "[All belongs] to Allāh." Say, "Then how are you deluded?"

سَيَقُولُونَThey will saysayaqūlūna
لِلَّهِAllahlillahi
قُلْSayqul
فَأَنَّىٰThen howfa-annā
تُسْحَرُونَare you deludedtus'ḥarūna
90

بَلْ أَتَيْنَٰهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَٰذِبُونَ

Rather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars.

أَتَيْنَٰهُمWe (have) brought themataynāhum
بِٱلْحَقِّthe truthbil-ḥaqi
وَإِنَّهُمْbut indeed, theywa-innahum
لَكَٰذِبُونَsurely, (are) liarslakādhibūna
91

مَا ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِن وَلَدٍۢ وَمَا كَانَ مَعَهُۥ مِنْ إِلَٰهٍ ۚ إِذًۭا لَّذَهَبَ كُلُّ إِلَٰهٍۭ بِمَا خَلَقَ وَلَعَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ ۚ سُبْحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Allāh has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have [sought to] overcome others. Exalted is Allāh above what they describe [concerning Him].

لَّذَهَبَsurely (would have) taken awayladhahaba
كُلُّeachkullu
إِلَٰهٍۭgodilāhin
بِمَاwhatbimā
خَلَقَhe createdkhalaqa
وَلَعَلَاand surely would have overpoweredwalaʿalā
بَعْضُهُمْsome of thembaʿḍuhum
عَلَىٰ[on]ʿalā
بَعْضٍۢothersbaʿḍin
سُبْحَٰنَGlory besub'ḥāna
ٱللَّهِ(to) Allahl-lahi
عَمَّاabove whatʿammā
يَصِفُونَthey attributeyaṣifūna
92

عَٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ فَتَعَٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ

[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, so high is He above what they associate [with Him].

ٱلْغَيْبِ(of) the unseenl-ghaybi
وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِand the witnessedwal-shahādati
فَتَعَٰلَىٰexalted is Hefataʿālā
عَمَّاabove whatʿammā
يُشْرِكُونَthey associateyush'rikūna
93

قُل رَّبِّ إِمَّا تُرِيَنِّى مَا يُوعَدُونَ

Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised,

رَّبِّMy Lordrabbi
إِمَّاIfimmā
تُرِيَنِّىYou should show meturiyannī
مَاwhat
يُوعَدُونَthey are promisedyūʿadūna
94

رَبِّ فَلَا تَجْعَلْنِى فِى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people."

فَلَاthen (do) notfalā
تَجْعَلْنِىplace metajʿalnī
فِىamong
ٱلْقَوْمِthe peoplel-qawmi
ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna
95

وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّرِيَكَ مَا نَعِدُهُمْ لَقَٰدِرُونَ

And indeed, We are Able to show you what We have promised them.

وَإِنَّاAnd indeed Wewa-innā
عَلَىٰٓonʿalā
أَنthatan
نُّرِيَكَWe show younuriyaka
مَاwhat
نَعِدُهُمْWe have promised themnaʿiduhum
لَقَٰدِرُونَsurely ablelaqādirūna
96

ٱدْفَعْ بِٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ ٱلسَّيِّئَةَ ۚ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ

Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe.

بِٱلَّتِىby thatbi-allatī

أَحْسَنُ(is) bestaḥsanu
ٱلسَّيِّئَةَthe evill-sayi-ata
نَحْنُWenaḥnu
أَعْلَمُknow bestaʿlamu
بِمَاof whatbimā
يَصِفُونَthey attributeyaṣifūna
97

وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَٰتِ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ

And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,

وَقُلAnd saywaqul
رَّبِّMy Lordrabbi
أَعُوذُI seek refugeaʿūdhu
بِكَin Youbika
مِنْfrommin
هَمَزَٰتِ(the) suggestionshamazāti
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ(of) the evil onesl-shayāṭīni
98

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ

And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me."

وَأَعُوذُAnd I seek refugewa-aʿūdhu
بِكَin Youbika
رَبِّMy Lordrabbi
أَنLestan
يَحْضُرُونِthey be present with meyaḥḍurūni
99

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَ أَحَدَهُمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ٱرْجِعُونِ

[For such is the state of the disbelievers] until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back

Word by Word
حَتَّىٰٓUntilḥattā
إِذَاwhenidhā
جَآءَcomesjāa
أَحَدَهُمُ(to) one of themaḥadahumu
ٱلْمَوْتُthe deathl-mawtu
قَالَhe saysqāla
رَبِّMy Lordrabbi
ٱرْجِعُونِSend me backir'jiʿūni
100

لَعَلِّىٓ أَعْمَلُ صَٰلِحًۭا فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ ۚ كَلَّآ ۚ إِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَآئِلُهَا ۖ وَمِن وَرَآئِهِم بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind."967 No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.

  1. [967] Or "in that which I neglected."

لَعَلِّىٓThat I maylaʿallī
أَعْمَلُdoaʿmalu
صَٰلِحًۭاrighteous (deeds)ṣāliḥan
فِيمَاin whatfīmā
تَرَكْتُI left behindtaraktu
كَلَّآNokallā
إِنَّهَاIndeed, itinnahā
كَلِمَةٌ(is) a wordkalimatun
هُوَhehuwa
قَآئِلُهَاspeaks itqāiluhā
وَمِنand before themwamin
وَرَآئِهِمand before themwarāihim
بَرْزَخٌ(is) a barrierbarzakhun
إِلَىٰtillilā
يَوْمِ(the) Dayyawmi
يُبْعَثُونَthey are resurrectedyub'ʿathūna
