The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse972 - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes,973 and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion [i.e., law] of Allāh,974 if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

  1. [972] Either by voluntary confession of the offender or the testimony of four male witnesses to having actually seen the act take place. Otherwise, there can be no conviction.
  2. [973] The ruling in this verse is applicable to unmarried fornicators. Execution by stoning is confirmed in the sunnah for convicted adulterers.
  3. [974] i.e., Do not let sympathy for a guilty person move you to alter anything ordained by Allāh, for in His law is protection of society as a whole.

The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator975 or a polytheist, and that [i.e., marriage to such persons] has been made unlawful to the believers.

  1. [975] Included in this ruling is the adulterer as well. Such persons cannot be married to believers unless they have repented and reformed.

Allāh is the Light996 of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light997 is like a niche within which is a lamp;998 the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allāh guides to His light whom He wills. And Allāh presents examples for the people, and Allāh is Knowing of all things.

  1. [996] i.e., the source and bestower of light and enlightenment.
  2. [997] His guidance in the heart of a believing servant.
  3. [998] Literally, "a burning wick," which is the essence of a lamp.

Is there disease in their hearts? Or have they doubted? Or do they fear that Allāh will be unjust to them, or His Messenger? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust].

About This Surah

Surah An-Nur builds communal safety through sexual responsibility, evidence, privacy, restraint in speech, modesty, and respect for homes. It addresses unlawful sex, accusation, the household slander, marriage, gaze, clothing, and domestic permission before centering divine guidance in the Verse of Light. Because several passages carry legal consequences, no translation or website summary can function as a personalized ruling or private enforcement license.

An-Nur announces that its instructions are serious and memorable. The opening addresses unlawful sexual conduct, accusations, sworn procedure between spouses, and evidentiary standards. These are legal matters; private individuals receive no authority to investigate, punish, expose, or harass others. Translation alone cannot establish jurisdiction, proof, procedure, or a personalized ruling.

The extended response to the slander incident condemns passing a grave accusation from tongue to tongue without knowledge. Believers are instructed to think well, demand evidence, and refuse the spread of indecency. Applied today, this strongly challenges viral rumor and humiliation. Yet rumor warnings must not be twisted into automatically disbelieving reports of abuse. Immediate safety, careful evidence handling, due process, and qualified support all matter.

The chapter protects homes through permission, greeting, and willingness to leave when entry is refused. It instructs believing men and women concerning gaze, sexual restraint, adornment, and modesty, then encourages marriage and protection from exploitation. These verses require linguistic, legal, historical, and contemporary expertise. They must not become victim blaming, clothing-based moral worth, forced marriage, or control of another adult.

The Verse of Light places social ethics within divine guidance, followed by houses of remembrance and contrasts between guided and ungrounded deeds. Its imagery should be interpreted as Quranic parable, not converted into occult energy or a guaranteed healing technique.

The closing returns to obedience, communal security, permission within the household, social inclusion, and respect for the Messenger. Privacy is not secrecy for abuse; modesty is not shame; evidence is not mob accusation; and guidance is not private coercion.

Structure

Verses 1–10: sexual wrongdoing and accusation procedure1-10

The opening establishes legal seriousness, penalties, evidentiary requirements, and sworn procedure. These matters require qualified authority and cannot be privately enforced.

Verses 11–26: the slander and communal speech11-26

A household accusation becomes a community-wide lesson in evidence, charitable interpretation, speech restraint, forgiveness, and the damage caused by circulating indecency.

Verses 27–34: homes, gaze, modesty, and protection27-34

Permission to enter, privacy, disciplined gaze, sexual restraint, adornment, marriage, and protection from exploitation create boundaries in both public and domestic life.

Verses 35–46: the Light Verse and signs35-46

The parable of light, houses of remembrance, faithful commerce, mirage, darkness, created praise, clouds, and alternation of night and day contrast guidance with disorientation.

Verses 47–64: authority, safety, and household permission47-64

Hypocrisy, fair judgment, communal security, prayer, charity, permission at private times, social inclusion, and respect for collective summons complete the social ethic.

Reading Guide

Do not turn the opening into private enforcement

Legal penalties, evidence, procedure, jurisdiction, and defenses cannot be responsibly derived from a translation card. No reader is authorized to punish, expose, or harass another person.

Oppose rumor without silencing abuse reports

The slander passage condemns evidence-free circulation. Apply it together with immediate safety, responsible reporting, trauma-aware support, evidence preservation, and qualified investigation.

Read modesty as multi-party ethics

The chapter addresses men’s gaze, women’s gaze and adornment, household entry, sexual restraint, marriage, and exploitation. Do not reduce dignity to women’s clothing or blame victims.

Keep the Light Verse a Quranic parable

Study its imagery within the chapter’s social ethics and houses of remembrance. Do not market occult energy, guaranteed healing, or supernatural techniques unsupported by the text.

Key Passages

Accusation, witnesses, and sworn procedure 4-10

The passage sets demanding procedural boundaries around sexual accusation and marital claims. A website may identify those boundaries but cannot establish a case, determine guilt, or authorize private punishment. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

The slander and responsibility of speech 11-20

The community is corrected for receiving and repeating an accusation without knowledge. The warning addresses rumor and reputational destruction while requiring care not to dismiss credible reports of harm automatically. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Permission before entering homes 27-29

People are told to seek permission, greet residents, and leave when asked. Privacy is a protected boundary, although it must never be invoked to conceal violence, coercion, or danger within a home. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Gaze, restraint, and modesty 30-31

Men and women receive ethical instructions within a wider chapter about privacy and sexual responsibility. Translation differences and legal applications require expertise; the verses do not license public harassment or victim blaming. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

The parable of divine light 35-38

Niche, lamp, glass, oil, and layered light portray divine guidance, followed by houses of remembrance and people not distracted from worship and charity. The imagery is not a medical or occult procedure. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Recitation Note

No exclusive time, fixed repetition count, or guaranteed worldly outcome is asserted here for reciting Surah An-Nur. It may be read as Quran for worship, reflection, and study. Any separate claim about protection, healing, provision, marriage, pregnancy, or a prescribed number requires its own verified evidence and carefully limited wording.

Interpretation Limits

  • Criminal, evidentiary, marital, and dress passages require qualified legal interpretation and public due process.
  • No private punishment, exposure campaign, forced examination, or harassment is authorized.
  • Warnings against rumor must not be used to silence credible abuse reports or prevent immediate safety measures.
  • Modesty teaching must not become victim blaming, gender humiliation, or reduction of dignity to clothing.
