Surah Saba Verses 51–54

51

وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ فَزِعُوا۟ فَلَا فَوْتَ وَأُخِذُوا۟ مِن مَّكَانٍۢ قَرِيبٍۢ

And if you could see1238 when they are terrified but there is no escape, and they will be seized from a place nearby.

  1. [1238] i.e., have a glimpse of the Hereafter.

وَقَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ ٱلتَّنَاوُشُ مِن مَّكَانٍۭ بَعِيدٍۢ

And they will [then] say, "We believe in it!" But how for them will be the taking1239 [of faith] from a place far away?1240

  1. [1239] Literally, "taking of something within easy reach," in other words, "How can they expect to obtain faith at this point?"
  2. [1240] i.e., their former life on earth, wherein they had every opportunity but which is now gone, never to return.

وَأَنَّىٰBut howwa-annā

ٱلتَّنَاوُشُ(will be) the receivingl-tanāwushu
مِنfrommin
مَّكَانٍۭa placemakānin
بَعِيدٍۢfar offbaʿīdin

وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَيَقْذِفُونَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ مِن مَّكَانٍۭ بَعِيدٍۢ

And they had already disbelieved in it before and would assault1241 the unseen from a place far away.1242

  1. [1241] Verbally, by conjecture and denial.
  2. [1242] i.e., a position far from truth.

وَحِيلَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ مَا يَشْتَهُونَ كَمَا فُعِلَ بِأَشْيَاعِهِم مِّن قَبْلُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ فِى شَكٍّۢ مُّرِيبٍۭ

And prevention will be placed between them and what they desire,1243 as was done with their kind before. Indeed, they were in disquieting doubt [i.e., denial].

  1. [1243] Meaning the attainment of faith and its benefits or entrance into Paradise.
