Allāh has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful1180 your mothers. And He has not made your claimed [i.e., adopted] sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allāh says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way.

  1. [1180] By the expression "You are to me like the back of my mother." Such an oath taken against approaching one's wife was a pre-Islāmic practice declared by Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) to be a sin requiring expiation as described in 58:3-4.

The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves,1182 and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allāh than the [other] believers and the emigrants, except that you may do to your close associates a kindness [through bequest]. That was in the Book1183 inscribed.

  1. [1182] He (ﷺ) is more worthy of their obedience and loyalty and is more concerned for them than they are for one another.

Indisposed1190 toward you. And when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes revolving like one being overcome by death. But when fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, indisposed toward [any] good. Those have not believed, so Allāh has rendered their deeds worthless, and ever is that, for Allāh, easy.

It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allāh and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.

And [remember, O Muḥammad], when you said to the one on whom Allāh bestowed favor and you bestowed favor,1198 "Keep your wife and fear Allāh," while you concealed within yourself that which Allāh is to disclose.1199 And you feared the people,1200 while Allāh has more right that you fear Him.1201 So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort [i.e., guilt] concerning the wives of their claimed [i.e., adopted] sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command [i.e., decree] of Allāh accomplished.

  1. [1198] Referring to the Prophet's freed slave, Zayd bin Ḥārithah.
  2. [1199] i.e., Allāh's command to the Prophet (ﷺ) to marry Zaynab after Zayd divorced her. This was to demonstrate that a man may marry a woman formerly married to his adopted son.
  3. [1200] i.e., feared their saying that the Prophet (ﷺ) had married the (former) wife of his son (which is prohibited by Allāh in the case of a true, begotten son).
  4. [1201] By making known His command.

About This Surah

Surah Al-Ahzab addresses the Confederates’ siege, household and adoption reforms, the Prophet’s family, public conduct, marriage boundaries, harmful rumor, and communal responsibility. Its rulings include Prophet-specific material and historically situated conflict language. The chapter cannot be used to erase adopted children’s dignity, police women, harass the Prophet’s family, or authorize private violence. Responsible reading requires legal, historical, and linguistic context.

Al-Ahzab begins by rejecting invented family fictions: adopted children should be called by their known parentage while moral care and affection remain. The reform concerns lineage and legal attribution; it must not stigmatize adoption, foster care, infertility, or children whose parentage is unknown.

The Confederates’ siege brings fear, rumor, exposed vulnerability, and differing responses. Conflict statements belong to a named military crisis around Medina and communal authority. They do not authorize modern private warfare or indiscriminate hostility.

The Prophet’s wives receive choices, responsibilities, household guidance, and a distinct public role. Several commands are Prophet-specific or address his household directly. They cannot be generalized casually into surveillance, confinement, or harassment of all women. The chapter also reforms adoption-era marriage assumptions through Zayd’s case, which requires careful legal and historical explanation.

The Messenger is described as an excellent example, the final prophet, witness, bearer of good news, warner, and caller to God. Believers are instructed to send blessings upon him and not cause harm through intrusion or rumor. Public etiquette, privacy, and respect remain important without turning historical household access rules into pretexts for controlling others.

Later verses address outer garments in a context of recognition and harassment. No clothing choice makes harassment acceptable, and responsibility remains with the harasser. The chapter condemns rumor-mongers and closes with the human trust and accountability. Its gender, family, and conflict material requires qualified interpretation, not isolated social-media rulings.

Core Themes

  • Lineage reform without stigmatizing adopted children
  • The Confederates as a bounded conflict context
  • Prophet-specific household responsibilities
  • Zayd’s case and adoption-era legal reform
  • Public privacy, rumor, and harassment
  • The human trust and final accountability

Structure

Verses 1–8: adoption, lineage, and covenant1-8

Obedience, rejection of invented legal identities, known parentage, mistakes, the Prophet’s relation to believers, and prophetic covenant establish family and public responsibility.

Verses 9–27: the Confederates and communal testing9-27

Siege, fear, rumor, hypocrisy, courage, divine aid, retreat, and consequences unfold within a named conflict and accountable communal leadership. Its place in the surah controls responsible later application.

Verses 28–40: the Prophet’s household and Zayd28-40

Choices for the wives, household responsibilities, moral equality, Zayd’s marriage, adoption reform, and final prophethood require careful distinction between general and Prophet-specific rulings.

Verses 41–59: remembrance, marriage, privacy, and dress41-59

Remembrance, the Messenger’s roles, marriage rules, household access, blessings upon the Prophet, harmful accusation, outer garments, and harassment form a high-context social section.

Verses 60–73: rumor, judgment, truthful speech, and trust60-73

Threats against organized rumor and insecurity, final judgment, rejection of abusive comparison, truthful speech, corrected deeds, and the offered trust conclude the surah.

Reading Guide

Distinguish care from lineage attribution

The adoption reform addresses names and legal lineage. It must not reduce affection, care, inheritance planning through lawful means, or the dignity of adopted and fostered children.

Keep conflict verses inside the siege

Read fear, desertion, rumor, defense, and consequence within the Confederates’ attack and communal authority. They are not generic private commands.

Separate Prophet-specific and general material

Household, marriage, and access verses have different addressees. Do not universalize every instruction without qualified legal and historical analysis. Keep the cited context and stated safety limits visible.

Never use dress language to excuse harassment

Verse 59 addresses recognition and harm in context. Responsibility for harassment remains with perpetrators regardless of a victim’s clothing or behavior.

Key Passages

Adoption and known parentage 4-5

The verses correct legal attribution and instruct use of known parentage while excusing honest mistakes. They do not stigmatize adopted children, foster care, unknown lineage, or infertility. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Fear during the Confederates’ siege 9-20

The passage records external attack, intense fear, rumor, wavering, and exposed hypocrisy. Its military language is bounded by a named communal crisis rather than free-standing private warfare. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

The Prophet’s wives and moral virtues 28-35

Distinct household choices and responsibilities lead into a broad list of believing, truthful, patient, charitable, fasting, chaste, and remembering men and women, joining difference with shared moral worth. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Zayd, marriage reform, and final prophethood 37-40

Zayd’s case addresses adoption-era legal assumptions and is followed by the declaration of final prophethood. The section requires historical and legal context, not gossip or casual analogy. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Blessings, harm, and outer garments 56-59

Blessings upon the Prophet, condemnation of harmful accusation, and a contextual clothing instruction appear together. None provides permission to harass, police, or blame women for violence against them. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Recitation Note

No exclusive time, fixed repetition count, or guaranteed worldly outcome is asserted here for reciting Surah Al-Ahzab. Reading it is worship and study; any separate claim about protection, healing, marriage, children, provision, or success requires independently verified evidence and narrow wording.

Interpretation Limits

  • Adoption reform must not stigmatize adopted children, foster families, infertility, or unknown parentage.
  • Confederates passages do not authorize private warfare, terrorism, or indiscriminate violence.
  • Prophet-specific household and marriage rules must not be generalized without qualified analysis.
  • Clothing passages never excuse harassment or shift responsibility from perpetrators to victims.
