Surah Ghafir Verses 51–85

51

إِنَّا لَنَنصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلْأَشْهَٰدُ

Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -

Word by Word
إِنَّاIndeed Weinnā
لَنَنصُرُWe will surely helplananṣuru
رُسُلَنَاOur Messengersrusulanā
وَٱلَّذِينَand those whowa-alladhīna
ءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanū
فِىin
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe lifel-ḥayati
ٱلدُّنْيَا(of) the worldl-dun'yā
وَيَوْمَand (on the) Daywayawma
يَقُومُ(when) will standyaqūmu
ٱلْأَشْهَٰدُthe witnessesl-ashhādu
52

يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ ۖ وَلَهُمُ ٱللَّعْنَةُ وَلَهُمْ سُوٓءُ ٱلدَّارِ

The Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell].

ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna
مَعْذِرَتُهُمْtheir excusemaʿdhiratuhum
وَلَهُمُand for themwalahumu
ٱللَّعْنَةُ(is) the cursel-laʿnatu
وَلَهُمْand for themwalahum
سُوٓءُ(is the) worstsūu
ٱلدَّارِhomel-dāri
53

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَأَوْرَثْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ

And We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlywalaqad
ءَاتَيْنَاWe gaveātaynā
مُوسَىMusamūsā
ٱلْهُدَىٰthe guidancel-hudā
وَأَوْرَثْنَاand We caused to inheritwa-awrathnā
بَنِىٓ(the) Children of Israelbanī
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(the) Children of Israelis'rāīla
ٱلْكِتَٰبَthe Bookl-kitāba
54

هُدًۭى وَذِكْرَىٰ لِأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ

As guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.

وَذِكْرَىٰand a reminderwadhik'rā
لِأُو۟لِىfor thoseli-ulī
ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ(of) understandingl-albābi
55

فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّۭ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِبْكَٰرِ

So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin1375 and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.

  1. [1375] What is intended is "fault" or "error" in judgement, since all prophets were protected by Allāh from falling into sin. The implication is that all believers should seek forgiveness for their sins.

وَعْدَ(the) Promise of Allahwaʿda
ٱللَّهِ(the) Promise of Allahl-lahi
حَقٌّۭ(is) trueḥaqqun
وَٱسْتَغْفِرْAnd ask forgivenesswa-is'taghfir
لِذَنۢبِكَfor your sinlidhanbika
وَسَبِّحْand glorifywasabbiḥ
بِحَمْدِ(the) praisebiḥamdi
رَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbika
بِٱلْعَشِىِّin the eveningbil-ʿashiyi
وَٱلْإِبْكَٰرِand the morningwal-ib'kāri
56

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمْ ۙ إِن فِى صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌۭ مَّا هُم بِبَٰلِغِيهِ ۚ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ

Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without [any] evidence having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.

أَتَىٰهُمْ(which) came to thematāhum
إِنnotin
فِى(is) in
صُدُورِهِمْtheir breastsṣudūrihim
إِلَّاbutillā
كِبْرٌۭgreatnesskib'run
مَّاnot
هُمtheyhum
بِبَٰلِغِيهِ(can) reach itbibālighīhi
فَٱسْتَعِذْSo seek refugefa-is'taʿidh
بِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahi
إِنَّهُۥIndeed Heinnahu
هُوَHehuwa
ٱلسَّمِيعُ(is) the All-Hearerl-samīʿu
ٱلْبَصِيرُthe All-Seerl-baṣīru
57

لَخَلْقُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
أَكْبَرُ(is) greaterakbaru
مِنْthanmin
خَلْقِ(the) creationkhalqi
ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the mankindl-nāsi
وَلَٰكِنَّbutwalākinna
أَكْثَرَmostakthara
ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the peoplel-nāsi
لَا(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَknowyaʿlamūna
58

وَمَا يَسْتَوِى ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ وَٱلْبَصِيرُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَلَا ٱلْمُسِىٓءُ ۚ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ

And not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.

يَسْتَوِى(are) equalyastawī
ٱلْأَعْمَىٰthe blindl-aʿmā
وَٱلْبَصِيرُand the seeingwal-baṣīru
وَٱلَّذِينَand those whowa-alladhīna
ءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanū
وَعَمِلُوا۟and dowaʿamilū
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِrighteous deedsl-ṣāliḥāti
وَلَاand notwalā
ٱلْمُسِىٓءُthe evildoerl-musīu
قَلِيلًۭاLittleqalīlan
مَّا(is) what
تَتَذَكَّرُونَyou take heedtatadhakkarūna
59

إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِيَةٌۭ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهَا وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Indeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.

ٱلسَّاعَةَthe Hourl-sāʿata
لَءَاتِيَةٌۭ(is) surely cominglaātiyatun
لَّاno
رَيْبَdoubtrayba
فِيهَاin itfīhā
وَلَٰكِنَّbutwalākinna
أَكْثَرَmostakthara
ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the peoplel-nāsi
لَا(do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَbelieveyu'minūna
60

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِى سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ

And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.

رَبُّكُمُyour Lordrabbukumu
ٱدْعُونِىٓCall upon Meid'ʿūnī
أَسْتَجِبْI will respondastajib
لَكُمْto youlakum
إِنَّIndeedinna
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ(are) proudyastakbirūna
عَنْtoʿan
عِبَادَتِىworship Meʿibādatī
سَيَدْخُلُونَwill entersayadkhulūna
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannama
دَاخِرِينَ(in) humiliationdākhirīna
61

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا۟ فِيهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ

It is Allāh who made for you the night that you may rest therein and the day giving sight.1376 Indeed, Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful.

  1. [1376] i.e., making things visible.

ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhī
جَعَلَmadejaʿala
لَكُمُfor youlakumu
ٱلَّيْلَthe nightal-layla
لِتَسْكُنُوا۟that you may restlitaskunū
فِيهِin itfīhi
وَٱلنَّهَارَand the daywal-nahāra
مُبْصِرًاgiving visibilitymub'ṣiran
إِنَّIndeedinna
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
لَذُو(is) Full (of) Bountyladhū
فَضْلٍ(is) Full (of) Bountyfaḍlin
عَلَىtoʿalā
ٱلنَّاسِthe peoplel-nāsi
وَلَٰكِنَّbutwalākinna
أَكْثَرَmostakthara
ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the peoplel-nāsi
لَا(do) not
يَشْكُرُونَgive thanksyashkurūna
62

ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ خَٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤْفَكُونَ

That is Allāh, your Lord, Creator of all things; there is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?

ذَٰلِكُمُThatdhālikumu
ٱللَّهُ(is) Allahl-lahu
رَبُّكُمْyour Lordrabbukum
خَٰلِقُ(the) Creatorkhāliqu
كُلِّ(of) allkulli
شَىْءٍۢthingsshayin
لَّآ(there is) no
إِلَٰهَgodilāha
إِلَّاexceptillā
هُوَHimhuwa
فَأَنَّىٰSo howfa-annā
تُؤْفَكُونَare you deludedtu'fakūna
63

كَذَٰلِكَ يُؤْفَكُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ

Thus were those [before you] deluded who were rejecting the signs of Allāh.

يُؤْفَكُwere deludedyu'faku
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
كَانُوا۟werekānū
بِـَٔايَٰتِ(the) Signsbiāyāti
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
يَجْحَدُونَrejectingyajḥadūna
64

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ قَرَارًۭا وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بِنَآءًۭ وَصَوَّرَكُمْ فَأَحْسَنَ صُوَرَكُمْ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ ۖ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

It is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

فَأَحْسَنَand perfectedfa-aḥsana
صُوَرَكُمْyour formsṣuwarakum
وَرَزَقَكُمand provided youwarazaqakum
مِّنَofmina
ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِthe good thingsl-ṭayibāti
ذَٰلِكُمُThatdhālikumu
ٱللَّهُ(is) Allahl-lahu
رَبُّكُمْyour Lordrabbukum
فَتَبَارَكَThen blessed (is)fatabāraka
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
رَبُّ(the) Lordrabbu
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
65

هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱدْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ ۗ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

He is the Ever-Living;1377 there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

  1. [1377] Whose life is without beginning or end, and upon whom all created life depends.

فَٱدْعُوهُso call Himfa-id'ʿūhu
مُخْلِصِينَ(being) sinceremukh'liṣīna
لَهُto Himlahu
ٱلدِّينَ(in) the religionl-dīna
ٱلْحَمْدُAll praise (be)l-ḥamdu
لِلَّهِto Allahlillahi
رَبِّ(the) Lordrabbi
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
66

۞ قُلْ إِنِّى نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ ٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَمَّا جَآءَنِىَ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُ مِن رَّبِّى وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُسْلِمَ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allāh once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds."

نُهِيتُ[I] have been forbiddennuhītu

أَعْبُدَworshipaʿbuda
ٱلَّذِينَthose whomalladhīna
تَدْعُونَyou calltadʿūna
مِنbesidesmin
دُونِbesidesdūni
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
لَمَّاwhenlammā
جَآءَنِىَhave come to mejāaniya
ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُthe clear proofsl-bayinātu
مِنfrommin
رَّبِّىmy Lordrabbī
وَأُمِرْتُand I am commandedwa-umir'tu
أَنْtoan
أُسْلِمَsubmitus'lima
لِرَبِّto (the) Lordlirabbi
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
67

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابٍۢ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍۢ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍۢ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًۭا ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ أَشُدَّكُمْ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُوا۟ شُيُوخًۭا ۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن يُتَوَفَّىٰ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَلِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ أَجَلًۭا مُّسَمًّۭى وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

It is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term;1378 and perhaps you will use reason.

  1. [1378] The time decreed for your death.

نُّطْفَةٍۢa semen-dropnuṭ'fatin
ثُمَّthenthumma
مِنْfrommin
عَلَقَةٍۢa clinging substanceʿalaqatin
ثُمَّthenthumma
يُخْرِجُكُمْHe brings you outyukh'rijukum
طِفْلًۭا(as) a childṭif'lan
ثُمَّthenthumma
لِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟lets you reachlitablughū
أَشُدَّكُمْyour maturityashuddakum
ثُمَّthenthumma
لِتَكُونُوا۟lets you becomelitakūnū
شُيُوخًۭاoldshuyūkhan
وَمِنكُمand among youwaminkum
مَّن(is he) whoman
يُتَوَفَّىٰdiesyutawaffā
مِنbeforemin
قَبْلُbeforeqablu
وَلِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟and lets you reachwalitablughū
أَجَلًۭاa termajalan
مُّسَمًّۭىspecifiedmusamman
وَلَعَلَّكُمْand that you maywalaʿallakum
تَعْقِلُونَuse reasontaʿqilūna
68

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۖ فَإِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًۭا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ

He it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.

وَيُمِيتُand causes deathwayumītu
فَإِذَاAnd whenfa-idhā
قَضَىٰٓHe decreesqaḍā
أَمْرًۭاa matteramran
فَإِنَّمَاthen onlyfa-innamā
يَقُولُHe saysyaqūlu
لَهُۥto itlahu
كُنBekun
فَيَكُونُand it isfayakūnu
69

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ أَنَّىٰ يُصْرَفُونَ

Do you not consider those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh - how are they averted?

ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
يُجَٰدِلُونَdisputeyujādilūna
فِىٓconcerning
ءَايَٰتِ(the) Signsāyāti
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
أَنَّىٰHowannā
يُصْرَفُونَthey are turned awayyuṣ'rafūna
70

ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَبِمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا بِهِۦ رُسُلَنَا ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

Those who deny the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,

ٱلَّذِينَThose whoalladhīna
كَذَّبُوا۟denykadhabū
بِٱلْكِتَٰبِthe Bookbil-kitābi
وَبِمَآand with whatwabimā
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnā
بِهِۦwith itbihi
رُسُلَنَاOur Messengersrusulanā
فَسَوْفَbut soonfasawfa
يَعْلَمُونَthey will knowyaʿlamūna
71

إِذِ ٱلْأَغْلَٰلُ فِىٓ أَعْنَٰقِهِمْ وَٱلسَّلَٰسِلُ يُسْحَبُونَ

When the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged

ٱلْأَغْلَٰلُthe iron collarsl-aghlālu
فِىٓ(will be) around
أَعْنَٰقِهِمْtheir necksaʿnāqihim
وَٱلسَّلَٰسِلُand the chainswal-salāsilu
يُسْحَبُونَthey will be draggedyus'ḥabūna
72

فِى ٱلْحَمِيمِ ثُمَّ فِى ٱلنَّارِ يُسْجَرُونَ

In boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].

ٱلْحَمِيمِthe boiling waterl-ḥamīmi
ثُمَّthenthumma
فِىin
ٱلنَّارِthe Firel-nāri
يُسْجَرُونَthey will be burnedyus'jarūna
73

ثُمَّ قِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تُشْرِكُونَ

Then it will be said to them, "Where is that which you used to associate [with Him in worship]

مَا(is) that which
كُنتُمْyou used tokuntum
تُشْرِكُونَassociatetush'rikūna
74

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ قَالُوا۟ ضَلُّوا۟ عَنَّا بَل لَّمْ نَكُن نَّدْعُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ شَيْـًۭٔا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

Other than Allāh?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allāh put astray the disbelievers.

كَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālika
يُضِلُّAllah lets go astrayyuḍillu
ٱللَّهُAllah lets go astrayl-lahu
ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَthe disbelieversl-kāfirīna
75

ذَٰلِكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَفْرَحُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمْ تَمْرَحُونَ

[The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.

ذَٰلِكُمThat wasdhālikum
بِمَاbecausebimā
كُنتُمْyou used tokuntum
تَفْرَحُونَrejoicetafraḥūna
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
بِغَيْرِwithoutbighayri
ٱلْحَقِّrightl-ḥaqi
وَبِمَاand becausewabimā
كُنتُمْyou used tokuntum
تَمْرَحُونَbe insolenttamraḥūna
76

ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟ أَبْوَٰبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ

Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."

Word by Word
ٱدْخُلُوٓا۟Enterud'khulū
أَبْوَٰبَ(the) gatesabwāba
جَهَنَّمَ(of) Helljahannama
خَٰلِدِينَ(to) abide foreverkhālidīna
فِيهَاin itfīhā
فَبِئْسَand wretched isfabi'sa
مَثْوَى(the) abodemathwā
ٱلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ(of) the arrogantl-mutakabirīna
77

فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّۭ ۚ فَإِمَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعْضَ ٱلَّذِى نَعِدُهُمْ أَوْ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِلَيْنَا يُرْجَعُونَ

So be patient, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.

فَٱصْبِرْSo be patientfa-iṣ'bir
إِنَّindeedinna
وَعْدَ(the) Promisewaʿda
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
حَقٌّۭ(is) trueḥaqqun
فَإِمَّاAnd whetherfa-immā
نُرِيَنَّكَWe show younuriyannaka
بَعْضَsomebaʿḍa
ٱلَّذِى(of) whatalladhī
نَعِدُهُمْWe have promised themnaʿiduhum
أَوْoraw
نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَWe cause you to dienatawaffayannaka
فَإِلَيْنَاthen to Usfa-ilaynā
يُرْجَعُونَthey will be returnedyur'jaʿūna
78

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلًۭا مِّن قَبْلِكَ مِنْهُم مَّن قَصَصْنَا عَلَيْكَ وَمِنْهُم مَّن لَّمْ نَقْصُصْ عَلَيْكَ ۗ وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن يَأْتِىَ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ قُضِىَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ

And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allāh. So when the command of Allāh comes, it will be concluded [i.e., judged] in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].

قَصَصْنَاWe have relatedqaṣaṣnā
عَلَيْكَto youʿalayka
وَمِنْهُمand among themwamin'hum
مَّن(are) whoman
لَّمْnotlam
نَقْصُصْWe have relatednaqṣuṣ
عَلَيْكَto youʿalayka
وَمَاAnd notwamā
كَانَiskāna
لِرَسُولٍfor any Messengerlirasūlin
أَنthatan
يَأْتِىَhe bringsyatiya
بِـَٔايَةٍa Signbiāyatin
إِلَّاexceptillā
بِإِذْنِby (the) permissionbi-idh'ni
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
فَإِذَاSo whenfa-idhā
جَآءَcomesjāa
أَمْرُ(the) Commandamru
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
قُضِىَit will be decidedquḍiya
بِٱلْحَقِّin truthbil-ḥaqi
وَخَسِرَand will losewakhasira
هُنَالِكَtherehunālika
ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَthe falsifiersl-mub'ṭilūna
79

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَنْعَٰمَ لِتَرْكَبُوا۟ مِنْهَا وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ

It is Allāh who made for you the grazing animals upon which you ride, and some of them you eat.

ٱللَّهُAllahal-lahu
ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhī
جَعَلَmadejaʿala
لَكُمُfor youlakumu
ٱلْأَنْعَٰمَthe cattlel-anʿāma
لِتَرْكَبُوا۟that you may ridelitarkabū
مِنْهَاsome of themmin'hā
وَمِنْهَاand some of themwamin'hā
تَأْكُلُونَyou eattakulūna
80

وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَنَٰفِعُ وَلِتَبْلُغُوا۟ عَلَيْهَا حَاجَةًۭ فِى صُدُورِكُمْ وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَ

And for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts;1379 and upon them and upon ships you are carried.

  1. [1379] i.e., that you may use the animals to carry your loads to distant places, according to need.

وَلَكُمْAnd for youwalakum
فِيهَاin themfīhā
مَنَٰفِعُ(are) benefitsmanāfiʿu
وَلِتَبْلُغُوا۟and that you may reachwalitablughū
عَلَيْهَاthrough themʿalayhā
حَاجَةًۭa needḥājatan
فِى(that is) in
صُدُورِكُمْyour breastsṣudūrikum
وَعَلَيْهَاand upon themwaʿalayhā
وَعَلَىand uponwaʿalā
ٱلْفُلْكِthe shipsl-ful'ki
تُحْمَلُونَyou are carriedtuḥ'malūna
81

وَيُرِيكُمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ فَأَىَّ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُنكِرُونَ

And He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allāh do you deny?

وَيُرِيكُمْAnd He shows youwayurīkum
ءَايَٰتِهِۦHis Signsāyātihi
فَأَىَّThen whichfa-ayya
ءَايَٰتِ(of the) Signsāyāti
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
تُنكِرُونَwill you denytunkirūna
82

أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوٓا۟ أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُمْ وَأَشَدَّ قُوَّةًۭ وَءَاثَارًۭا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.

فَيَنظُرُوا۟and seefayanẓurū

عَٰقِبَةُ(the) endʿāqibatu
ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīna
مِن(were) before themmin
قَبْلِهِمْ(were) before themqablihim
كَانُوٓا۟They werekānū
أَكْثَرَmore numerousakthara
مِنْهُمْthan themmin'hum
وَأَشَدَّand mightierwa-ashadda
قُوَّةًۭ(in) strengthquwwatan
وَءَاثَارًۭاand impressionswaāthāran
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe landl-arḍi
فَمَآbut notfamā
أَغْنَىٰavailedaghnā
عَنْهُمthemʿanhum
مَّاwhat
كَانُوا۟they used tokānū
يَكْسِبُونَearnyaksibūna
83

فَلَمَّا جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَا عِندَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

And when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

فَلَمَّاThen whenfalammā
جَآءَتْهُمْcame to themjāathum
رُسُلُهُمtheir Messengersrusuluhum
بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِwith clear proofsbil-bayināti
فَرِحُوا۟they rejoicedfariḥū
بِمَاin whatbimā
عِندَهُمthey hadʿindahum
مِّنَofmina
ٱلْعِلْمِthe knowledgel-ʿil'mi
وَحَاقَand envelopedwaḥāqa
بِهِمthembihim
مَّاwhat
كَانُوا۟they used tokānū
بِهِۦ[at it]bihi
يَسْتَهْزِءُونَmockyastahziūna
84

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا۟ بَأْسَنَا قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَحْدَهُۥ وَكَفَرْنَا بِمَا كُنَّا بِهِۦ مُشْرِكِينَ

And when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in Allāh alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him."

بَأْسَنَاOur punishmentbasanā
قَالُوٓا۟they saidqālū
ءَامَنَّاWe believeāmannā
بِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahi
وَحْدَهُۥAlonewaḥdahu
وَكَفَرْنَاand we disbelievewakafarnā
بِمَاin whatbimā
كُنَّاwe used tokunnā
بِهِۦwith Himbihi
مُشْرِكِينَassociatemush'rikīna
85

فَلَمْ يَكُ يَنفَعُهُمْ إِيمَٰنُهُمْ لَمَّا رَأَوْا۟ بَأْسَنَا ۖ سُنَّتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِى قَدْ خَلَتْ فِى عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ

But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allāh which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].

ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
قَدْ(has) indeedqad
خَلَتْprecededkhalat
فِىamong
عِبَادِهِۦHis slavesʿibādihi
وَخَسِرَAnd are lostwakhasira
هُنَالِكَtherehunālika
ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَthe disbelieversl-kāfirūna
