The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Unquestionably, for Allāh is the pure religion.1339 And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allāh in position." Indeed, Allāh will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allāh does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

  1. [1339] i.e., acceptable to Allāh is that none be associated with Him in worship and obedience.

He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates.1342 He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses.1343 That is Allāh, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted?

If you disbelieve - indeed, Allāh is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves [i.e., likes] it for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

About This Surah

Surah Az-Zumar calls for sincere worship of God without invented intermediaries. It contrasts people who turn to God in distress and forget afterward with those who worship consistently, reflect on revelation and remain hopeful. The chapter contains a major call not to despair of divine mercy, followed by an urgent command to return before consequences arrive. It closes with groups being led to judgment and the final praise of God.

The opening presents the revelation of the Book and commands sincere worship. People who claim that other beings bring them nearer to God are challenged. The surah emphasizes that creation, provision and judgment belong to God.

Human inconsistency appears repeatedly. A person calls upon God during hardship, then attributes relief elsewhere or forgets dependence. In contrast, the night worshipper combines reverence, hope and knowledge.

The Quran is described as a harmonious and repeated message that causes receptive hearts to tremble and then soften. This response is not merely emotional; it leads toward guidance.

Several examples expose the weakness of divided worship. The image of one servant owned by conflicting masters and another devoted to one master illustrates the difference between divided and unified allegiance.

A central passage addresses people who have wronged themselves and tells them not to despair of God's mercy. The surrounding verses immediately call for repentance and submission before punishment comes. The verse should not be isolated to promise forgiveness while dismissing accountability or repair.

The closing scenes show the trumpet, light, records, witnesses and groups led to the Fire or Paradise. The final image is of angels surrounding the throne and judgment completed in truth.

The call not to despair of God’s mercy addresses people who have wronged themselves and is followed by repentance and return.

It offers profound hope but must not replace crisis intervention, medical or mental-health care, restitution, or lawful accountability.

The analogy between sleep and death belongs to divine governance of souls and should not be expanded into dream divination or claims of diagnosing death.

Core Themes

  • Worship should be sincere and undivided.
  • Hardship reveals dependence, but memory can fade.
  • Revelation can soften the heart.
  • Hope in mercy must lead to repentance.
  • Provision is not proof of spiritual rank.
  • Final judgment is public, just and complete.
