Surah Ar-Rum Verses 51–60

51

وَلَئِنْ أَرْسَلْنَا رِيحًۭا فَرَأَوْهُ مُصْفَرًّۭا لَّظَلُّوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ يَكْفُرُونَ

But if We should send a [bad] wind and they saw [their crops] turned yellow, they would remain thereafter disbelievers.1154

  1. [1154] Denying and ungrateful for the previous favors of Allāh.

Word by Word
وَلَئِنْBut ifwala-in
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnā
رِيحًۭاa windrīḥan
فَرَأَوْهُand they see itfara-awhu
مُصْفَرًّۭاturn yellowmuṣ'farran
لَّظَلُّوا۟certainly they continuelaẓallū
مِنۢafter itmin
بَعْدِهِۦafter itbaʿdihi
يَكْفُرُونَ(in) disbeliefyakfurūna
52

فَإِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَلَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ ٱلدُّعَآءَ إِذَا وَلَّوْا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ

So indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs, retreating.

تُسْمِعُmake the dead heartus'miʿu
ٱلْمَوْتَىٰmake the dead hearl-mawtā
وَلَاand notwalā
تُسْمِعُmake the deaf heartus'miʿu
ٱلصُّمَّmake the deaf hearl-ṣuma
ٱلدُّعَآءَthe calll-duʿāa
إِذَاwhenidhā
وَلَّوْا۟they turnwallaw
مُدْبِرِينَretreatingmud'birīna
53

وَمَآ أَنتَ بِهَٰدِ ٱلْعُمْىِ عَن ضَلَٰلَتِهِمْ ۖ إِن تُسْمِعُ إِلَّا مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا فَهُم مُّسْلِمُونَ

And you cannot guide the blind away from their error. You will only make hear those who believe in Our verses so they are Muslims [in submission to Allāh].

بِهَٰدِcan guidebihādi
ٱلْعُمْىِthe blindl-ʿum'yi
عَنfromʿan
ضَلَٰلَتِهِمْtheir errorḍalālatihim
إِنNotin
تُسْمِعُyou can make heartus'miʿu
إِلَّاexceptillā
مَن(those) whoman
يُؤْمِنُbelieveyu'minu
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاin Our Versesbiāyātinā
فَهُمso theyfahum
مُّسْلِمُونَsurrendermus'limūna
54

۞ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن ضَعْفٍۢ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ضَعْفٍۢ قُوَّةًۭ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍۢ ضَعْفًۭا وَشَيْبَةًۭ ۚ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَآءُ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْقَدِيرُ

Allāh is the one who created you from weakness, then made after weakness strength, then made after strength weakness and white hair. He creates what He wills, and He is the Knowing, the Competent.

ضَعْفٍۢweaknessḍaʿfin
قُوَّةًۭstrengthquwwatan
ثُمَّthenthumma
جَعَلَmadejaʿala
مِنۢaftermin
بَعْدِafterbaʿdi
قُوَّةٍۢstrengthquwwatin
ضَعْفًۭاweaknessḍaʿfan
وَشَيْبَةًۭand gray hairwashaybatan
يَخْلُقُHe createsyakhluqu
مَاwhat
يَشَآءُHe willsyashāu
وَهُوَand Hewahuwa
ٱلْعَلِيمُ(is) the All-Knowerl-ʿalīmu
ٱلْقَدِيرُthe All-Powerfull-qadīru
55

وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يُقْسِمُ ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ مَا لَبِثُوا۟ غَيْرَ سَاعَةٍۢ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كَانُوا۟ يُؤْفَكُونَ

And the Day the Hour appears the criminals will swear they had remained but an hour. Thus they were deluded.

وَيَوْمَAnd (the) Daywayawma
تَقُومُwill (be) establishedtaqūmu
ٱلسَّاعَةُthe Hourl-sāʿatu
يُقْسِمُwill swearyuq'simu
ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَthe criminalsl-muj'rimūna
مَاnot
لَبِثُوا۟they remainedlabithū
غَيْرَbutghayra
سَاعَةٍۢan hoursāʿatin
كَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālika
كَانُوا۟they werekānū
يُؤْفَكُونَdeludedyu'fakūna
56

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ وَٱلْإِيمَٰنَ لَقَدْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِى كِتَٰبِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْبَعْثِ ۖ فَهَٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْبَعْثِ وَلَٰكِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

But those who were given knowledge and faith will say, "You remained the extent of Allāh's decree until the Day of Resurrection, and this is the Day of Resurrection, but you did not used to know."1155

  1. [1155] i.e., acknowledge the truth.

وَقَالَBut will saywaqāla
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
أُوتُوا۟were givenūtū
ٱلْعِلْمَthe knowledgel-ʿil'ma
وَٱلْإِيمَٰنَand the faithwal-īmāna
لَقَدْVerilylaqad
لَبِثْتُمْyou remainedlabith'tum
فِىby
كِتَٰبِ(the) Decreekitābi
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
إِلَىٰuntililā
يَوْمِ(the) Dayyawmi
ٱلْبَعْثِ(of) Resurrectionl-baʿthi
فَهَٰذَاAnd thisfahādhā
يَوْمُ(is the) Dayyawmu
ٱلْبَعْثِ(of) the Resurrectionl-baʿthi
وَلَٰكِنَّكُمْbut youwalākinnakum
كُنتُمْwerekuntum
لَاnot
تَعْلَمُونَknowingtaʿlamūna
57

فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ لَّا يَنفَعُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ

So that Day, their excuse will not benefit those who wronged, nor will they be asked to appease [Allāh].

فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢSo that Dayfayawma-idhin
لَّاnot
يَنفَعُwill profityanfaʿu
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
ظَلَمُوا۟wrongedẓalamū
مَعْذِرَتُهُمْtheir excusesmaʿdhiratuhum
وَلَاand notwalā
هُمْtheyhum
يُسْتَعْتَبُونَwill be allowed to make amendsyus'taʿtabūna
58

وَلَقَدْ ضَرَبْنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِى هَٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍۢ ۚ وَلَئِن جِئْتَهُم بِـَٔايَةٍۢ لَّيَقُولَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا مُبْطِلُونَ

And We have certainly presented to the people in this Qur’ān from every [kind of] example. But, [O Muḥammad], if you should bring them a sign, the disbelievers will surely say, "You [believers] are but falsifiers."

وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqad
ضَرَبْنَاWe (have) set forthḍarabnā
لِلنَّاسِfor mankindlilnnāsi
فِىin
هَٰذَاthishādhā
ٱلْقُرْءَانِ[the] Quranl-qur'āni
مِنofmin
كُلِّeverykulli
مَثَلٍۢexamplemathalin
وَلَئِنBut ifwala-in
جِئْتَهُمyou bring themji'tahum
بِـَٔايَةٍۢa signbiāyatin
لَّيَقُولَنَّsurely will saylayaqūlanna
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
كَفَرُوٓا۟disbelievekafarū
إِنْNotin
أَنتُمْyouantum
إِلَّا(are) exceptillā
مُبْطِلُونَfalsifiersmub'ṭilūna
59

كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

Thus does Allāh seal the hearts of those who do not know.1156

  1. [1156] i.e., those who do not wish to know the truth and refuse it.

كَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālika
يَطْبَعُAllah sealsyaṭbaʿu
ٱللَّهُAllah sealsl-lahu
عَلَىٰ[on]ʿalā
قُلُوبِ(the) heartsqulūbi
ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīna
لَا(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَknowyaʿlamūna
60

فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّۭ ۖ وَلَا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُوقِنُونَ

So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And let them not disquiet you who are not certain [in faith].

فَٱصْبِرْSo be patientfa-iṣ'bir
إِنَّIndeedinna
وَعْدَ(the) Promisewaʿda
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
حَقٌّۭ(is) trueḥaqqun
وَلَاAnd (let) notwalā
يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَtake you in light estimationyastakhiffannaka
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
لَا(are) not
يُوقِنُونَcertain in faithyūqinūna
