Surah An-Naml Verses 51–93

51

فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ مَكْرِهِمْ أَنَّا دَمَّرْنَٰهُمْ وَقَوْمَهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Then look how was the outcome of their plan - that We destroyed them and their people, all.

فَٱنظُرْThen seefa-unẓur
كَيْفَhowkayfa
كَانَwaskāna
عَٰقِبَةُ(the) endʿāqibatu
مَكْرِهِمْ(of) their plotmakrihim
أَنَّاthat Weannā
دَمَّرْنَٰهُمْdestroyed themdammarnāhum
وَقَوْمَهُمْand their peoplewaqawmahum
أَجْمَعِينَallajmaʿīna
52

فَتِلْكَ بُيُوتُهُمْ خَاوِيَةًۢ بِمَا ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَعْلَمُونَ

So those are their houses, desolate because of the wrong they had done. Indeed in that is a sign for people who know.

بُيُوتُهُمْ(are) their housesbuyūtuhum
خَاوِيَةًۢruinedkhāwiyatan
بِمَاbecausebimā
ظَلَمُوٓا۟they wrongedẓalamū
إِنَّIndeedinna
فِىin
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
لَءَايَةًۭsurely, is a signlaāyatan
لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a peopleliqawmin
يَعْلَمُونَwho knowyaʿlamūna
53

وَأَنجَيْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ

And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allāh.

وَأَنجَيْنَاAnd We savedwa-anjaynā
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
ءَامَنُوا۟believedāmanū
وَكَانُوا۟and used (to)wakānū
يَتَّقُونَfear (Allah)yattaqūna
54

وَلُوطًا إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَتَأْتُونَ ٱلْفَٰحِشَةَ وَأَنتُمْ تُبْصِرُونَ

And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Do you commit immorality1081 while you are seeing?1082

  1. [1081] Homosexual acts.
  2. [1082] i.e., openly. Another meaning is "...while you are aware [that it is wrong]."

إِذْwhenidh
قَالَhe saidqāla
لِقَوْمِهِۦٓto his peopleliqawmihi
أَتَأْتُونَDo you commitatatūna
ٱلْفَٰحِشَةَ[the] immoralityl-fāḥishata
وَأَنتُمْwhile youwa-antum
تُبْصِرُونَseetub'ṣirūna
55

أَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ شَهْوَةًۭ مِّن دُونِ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌۭ تَجْهَلُونَ

Do you indeed approach men with desire instead of women? Rather, you are a people behaving ignorantly."

ٱلرِّجَالَthe menl-rijāla
شَهْوَةًۭ(with) lustshahwatan

ٱلنِّسَآءِthe womenl-nisāi
بَلْNaybal
أَنتُمْyouantum
قَوْمٌۭ(are) a peopleqawmun
تَجْهَلُونَignoranttajhalūna
56

۞ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ أَخْرِجُوٓا۟ ءَالَ لُوطٍۢ مِّن قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌۭ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ

But the answer of his people was not except that they said, "Expel the family of Lot from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure."

لُوطٍۢ(of) Lutlūṭin
مِّنfrommin
قَرْيَتِكُمْyour townqaryatikum
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyinnahum
أُنَاسٌۭ(are) peopleunāsun
يَتَطَهَّرُونَwho keep clean and pureyataṭahharūna
57

فَأَنجَيْنَٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَٰهَا مِنَ ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ

So We saved him and his family, except for his wife; We destined her to be of those who remained behind.

فَأَنجَيْنَٰهُSo We saved himfa-anjaynāhu
وَأَهْلَهُۥٓand his familywa-ahlahu
إِلَّاexceptillā
ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥhis wifeim'ra-atahu
قَدَّرْنَٰهَاWe destined herqaddarnāhā
مِنَ(to be) ofmina
ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَthose who remained behindl-ghābirīna
58

وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّطَرًۭا ۖ فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned.

وَأَمْطَرْنَاAnd We rainedwa-amṭarnā
عَلَيْهِمupon themʿalayhim
مَّطَرًۭاa rainmaṭaran
فَسَآءَand was evilfasāa
مَطَرُ(the) rainmaṭaru
ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ(on) those who were warnedl-mundharīna
59

قُلِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَسَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ عِبَادِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱصْطَفَىٰٓ ۗ ءَآللَّهُ خَيْرٌ أَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Praise be to Allāh, and peace upon His servants whom He has chosen. Is Allāh better or what they associate with Him?"

ٱلْحَمْدُAll praise (be)l-ḥamdu
لِلَّهِto Allahlillahi
وَسَلَٰمٌand peace (be)wasalāmun
عَلَىٰuponʿalā
عِبَادِهِHis slavesʿibādihi
ٱلَّذِينَthose whomalladhīna
ٱصْطَفَىٰٓHe has choseniṣ'ṭafā
ءَآللَّهُIs Allahāllahu
خَيْرٌbetterkhayrun
أَمَّاor whatammā
يُشْرِكُونَthey associate (with Him)yush'rikūna
60

أَمَّنْ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَأَنزَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ فَأَنۢبَتْنَا بِهِۦ حَدَآئِقَ ذَاتَ بَهْجَةٍۢ مَّا كَانَ لَكُمْ أَن تُنۢبِتُوا۟ شَجَرَهَآ ۗ أَءِلَٰهٌۭ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌۭ يَعْدِلُونَ

[More precisely], is He [not best] who created the heavens and the earth and sent down for you rain from the sky, causing to grow thereby gardens of joyful beauty which you could not [otherwise] have grown the trees thereof? Is there a deity with Allāh?1083 [No], but they are a people who ascribe equals [to Him].

  1. [1083] Three meanings are implied: "Is there another god who did all of this with Allāh?" or "Is there any deity worthy to be worshipped along with Allāh?" or "Is there a deity to be compared with Allāh?"

ٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyl-samāi
مَآءًۭwatermāan
فَأَنۢبَتْنَاAnd We caused to growfa-anbatnā
بِهِۦtherebybihi
حَدَآئِقَgardensḥadāiqa
ذَاتَof beauty (and delight)dhāta
بَهْجَةٍۢof beauty (and delight)bahjatin
مَّاnot
كَانَit iskāna
لَكُمْfor youlakum
أَنthatan
تُنۢبِتُوا۟you cause to growtunbitū
شَجَرَهَآtheir treesshajarahā
أَءِلَٰهٌۭIs there any goda-ilāhun
مَّعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
بَلْNaybal
هُمْtheyhum
قَوْمٌۭ(are) a peopleqawmun
يَعْدِلُونَwho ascribe equalsyaʿdilūna
61

أَمَّن جَعَلَ ٱلْأَرْضَ قَرَارًۭا وَجَعَلَ خِلَٰلَهَآ أَنْهَٰرًۭا وَجَعَلَ لَهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ حَاجِزًا ۗ أَءِلَٰهٌۭ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

Is He [not best] who made the earth a stable ground and placed within it rivers and made for it firmly set mountains and placed between the two seas a barrier? Is there a deity with Allāh? [No], but most of them do not know.

خِلَٰلَهَآ(in) its midstkhilālahā
أَنْهَٰرًۭاriversanhāran
وَجَعَلَand madewajaʿala
لَهَاfor itlahā
رَوَٰسِىَfirm mountainsrawāsiya
وَجَعَلَand madewajaʿala
بَيْنَbetweenbayna
ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِthe two seasl-baḥrayni
حَاجِزًاa barrierḥājizan
أَءِلَٰهٌۭIs there any goda-ilāhun
مَّعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
بَلْNaybal
أَكْثَرُهُمْmost of themaktharuhum
لَا(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَknowyaʿlamūna
62

أَمَّن يُجِيبُ ٱلْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ ٱلسُّوٓءَ وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ خُلَفَآءَ ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ أَءِلَٰهٌۭ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ

Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth?1084 Is there a deity with Allāh? Little do you remember.

  1. [1084] Generation after generation.

ٱلْمُضْطَرَّ(to) the distressed onel-muḍ'ṭara
إِذَاwhenidhā
دَعَاهُhe calls Himdaʿāhu
وَيَكْشِفُand He removeswayakshifu
ٱلسُّوٓءَthe evill-sūa
وَيَجْعَلُكُمْand makes youwayajʿalukum
خُلَفَآءَinheritorskhulafāa
ٱلْأَرْضِ(of) the earthl-arḍi
أَءِلَٰهٌۭIs there any goda-ilāhun
مَّعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
قَلِيلًۭاLittleqalīlan
مَّا(is) what
تَذَكَّرُونَyou remembertadhakkarūna
63

أَمَّن يَهْدِيكُمْ فِى ظُلُمَٰتِ ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ وَمَن يُرْسِلُ ٱلرِّيَٰحَ بُشْرًۢا بَيْنَ يَدَىْ رَحْمَتِهِۦٓ ۗ أَءِلَٰهٌۭ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ تَعَٰلَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ

Is He [not best] who guides you through the darknesses of the land and sea and who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy? Is there a deity with Allāh? High is Allāh above whatever they associate with Him.

فِىin
ظُلُمَٰتِ(the) darkness [es]ẓulumāti
ٱلْبَرِّ(of) the landl-bari
وَٱلْبَحْرِand the seawal-baḥri
وَمَنand Whowaman
يُرْسِلُsendsyur'silu
ٱلرِّيَٰحَthe windsl-riyāḥa
بُشْرًۢا(as) glad tidingsbush'ran
بَيْنَbeforebayna
يَدَىْbeforeyaday
رَحْمَتِهِۦٓHis Mercyraḥmatihi
أَءِلَٰهٌۭIs there any goda-ilāhun
مَّعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
تَعَٰلَىHigh istaʿālā
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
عَمَّاabove whatʿammā
يُشْرِكُونَthey associate (with Him)yush'rikūna
64

أَمَّن يَبْدَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُۥ وَمَن يَرْزُقُكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ أَءِلَٰهٌۭ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ قُلْ هَاتُوا۟ بُرْهَٰنَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

Is He [not best] who begins creation and then repeats it and who provides for you from the heaven and earth? Is there a deity with Allāh? Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."

يُعِيدُهُۥrepeats ityuʿīduhu
وَمَنand Whowaman
يَرْزُقُكُمprovides youyarzuqukum
مِّنَfrommina
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe heavensl-samāi
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
أَءِلَٰهٌۭIs there any goda-ilāhun
مَّعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
قُلْSayqul
هَاتُوا۟Bring forthhātū
بُرْهَٰنَكُمْyour proofbur'hānakum
إِنifin
كُنتُمْyou arekuntum
صَٰدِقِينَtruthfulṣādiqīna
65

قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلْغَيْبَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ۚ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ أَيَّانَ يُبْعَثُونَ

Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allāh, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected."

فِى(is) in
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
ٱلْغَيْبَ(of) the unseenl-ghayba
إِلَّاexceptillā
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
وَمَاand notwamā
يَشْعُرُونَthey perceiveyashʿurūna
أَيَّانَwhenayyāna
يُبْعَثُونَthey will be resurrectedyub'ʿathūna
66

بَلِ ٱدَّٰرَكَ عِلْمُهُمْ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّۢ مِّنْهَا ۖ بَلْ هُم مِّنْهَا عَمُونَ

Rather, their knowledge is arrested concerning the Hereafter. Rather, they are in doubt about it. Rather, they are, concerning it, blind.

مِّنْهَاabout itmin'hā
بَلْNaybal

مِّنْهَاabout itmin'hā
عَمُونَ(are) blindʿamūna
67

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا كُنَّا تُرَٰبًۭا وَءَابَآؤُنَآ أَئِنَّا لَمُخْرَجُونَ

And those who disbelieve say, "When we have become dust as well as our forefathers, will we indeed be brought out [of the graves]?

ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
كَفَرُوٓا۟disbelievekafarū
أَءِذَاWhat, whena-idhā
كُنَّاwe have becomekunnā
تُرَٰبًۭاdustturāban
وَءَابَآؤُنَآand our forefatherswaābāunā
أَئِنَّاwill wea-innā
لَمُخْرَجُونَsurely be brought outlamukh'rajūna
68

لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا هَٰذَا نَحْنُ وَءَابَآؤُنَا مِن قَبْلُ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before. This is not but legends of the former peoples."

وُعِدْنَاwe have been promisedwuʿid'nā
هَٰذَاthishādhā
نَحْنُwenaḥnu
وَءَابَآؤُنَاand our forefatherswaābāunā
مِنbeforemin
قَبْلُbeforeqablu
إِنْNotin
هَٰذَآ(is) thishādhā
إِلَّآexceptillā
أَسَٰطِيرُtalesasāṭīru
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)l-awalīna
69

قُلْ سِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Proceed [i.e., travel] through the land and observe how was the end of the criminals."

ٱلْأَرْضِthe landl-arḍi
فَٱنظُرُوا۟and seefa-unẓurū
كَيْفَhowkayfa
كَانَwaskāna
عَٰقِبَةُ(the) endʿāqibatu
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ(of) the criminalsl-muj'rimīna
70

وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا تَكُن فِى ضَيْقٍۢ مِّمَّا يَمْكُرُونَ

And grieve not over them or be in distress from what they conspire.

فِىin
ضَيْقٍۢdistressḍayqin
مِّمَّاfrom whatmimmā
يَمْكُرُونَthey plotyamkurūna
71

وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا ٱلْوَعْدُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

And they say, "When is [the fulfillment of] this promise, if you should be truthful?"

وَيَقُولُونَAnd they saywayaqūlūna
مَتَىٰWhenmatā
هَٰذَا(will) thishādhā
ٱلْوَعْدُpromise (be fulfilled)l-waʿdu
إِنifin
كُنتُمْyou arekuntum
صَٰدِقِينَtruthfulṣādiqīna
72

قُلْ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ رَدِفَ لَكُم بَعْضُ ٱلَّذِى تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

Say, "Perhaps it is close behind you [i.e., very near] - some of that for which you are impatient.

لَكُمyoulakum
بَعْضُsomebaʿḍu
ٱلَّذِى(of) that whichalladhī
تَسْتَعْجِلُونَyou seek to hastentastaʿjilūna
73

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ

And indeed, your Lord is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful."

رَبَّكَyour Lordrabbaka
لَذُو(is) full of Bountyladhū
فَضْلٍ(is) full of Bountyfaḍlin
عَلَىforʿalā
ٱلنَّاسِthe mankindl-nāsi
وَلَٰكِنَّbutwalākinna
أَكْثَرَهُمْmost of themaktharahum
لَا(are) not
يَشْكُرُونَgratefulyashkurūna
74

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَيَعْلَمُ مَا تُكِنُّ صُدُورُهُمْ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ

And indeed, your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they declare.

لَيَعْلَمُsurely knowslayaʿlamu
مَاwhat
تُكِنُّconcealstukinnu
صُدُورُهُمْtheir breastsṣudūruhum
وَمَاand whatwamā
يُعْلِنُونَthey declareyuʿ'linūna
75

وَمَا مِنْ غَآئِبَةٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا فِى كِتَٰبٍۢ مُّبِينٍ

And there is nothing concealed1085 within the heaven and the earth except that it is in a clear Register.1086

  1. [1085] Literally, "absent [from the senses]."
  2. [1086] The Preserved Slate (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ), which is with Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā).

مُّبِينٍclearmubīnin
76

إِنَّ هَٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ يَقُصُّ عَلَىٰ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ أَكْثَرَ ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ

Indeed, this Qur’ān relates to the Children of Israel most of that over which they disagree.

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ[the] Quranl-qur'āna
يَقُصُّrelatesyaquṣṣu
عَلَىٰtoʿalā
بَنِىٓ(the) Childrenbanī
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(of) Israelis'rāīla
أَكْثَرَmostakthara
ٱلَّذِى(of) thatalladhī
هُمْtheyhum
فِيهِin itfīhi
يَخْتَلِفُونَdifferyakhtalifūna
77

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةٌۭ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

And indeed, it is guidance and mercy for the believers.

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itwa-innahu
لَهُدًۭى(is) surely a guidancelahudan
وَرَحْمَةٌۭand a mercywaraḥmatun
لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَfor the believerslil'mu'minīna
78

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقْضِى بَيْنَهُم بِحُكْمِهِۦ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Indeed, your Lord will judge between them by His [wise] judgement. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

إِنَّIndeedinna
رَبَّكَyour Lordrabbaka
يَقْضِىwill judgeyaqḍī
بَيْنَهُمbetween thembaynahum
بِحُكْمِهِۦby His Judgmentbiḥuk'mihi
وَهُوَand Hewahuwa
ٱلْعَزِيزُ(is) the All-Mightyl-ʿazīzu
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knowerl-ʿalīmu
79

فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَى ٱلْحَقِّ ٱلْمُبِينِ

So rely upon Allāh; indeed, you are upon the clear truth.

ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
إِنَّكَindeed, youinnaka
عَلَى(are) onʿalā
ٱلْحَقِّthe truthl-ḥaqi

80

إِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَلَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ ٱلدُّعَآءَ إِذَا وَلَّوْا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ

Indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they have turned their backs retreating.

ٱلْمَوْتَىٰthe deadl-mawtā
وَلَاand notwalā
تُسْمِعُcan you cause to heartus'miʿu
ٱلصُّمَّthe deafl-ṣuma
ٱلدُّعَآءَthe calll-duʿāa
إِذَاwhenidhā
وَلَّوْا۟they turn backwallaw
مُدْبِرِينَretreatingmud'birīna
81

وَمَآ أَنتَ بِهَٰدِى ٱلْعُمْىِ عَن ضَلَٰلَتِهِمْ ۖ إِن تُسْمِعُ إِلَّا مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا فَهُم مُّسْلِمُونَ

And you cannot guide the blind away from their error. You will only make hear those who believe in Our verses so they are Muslims [i.e., submitting to Allāh].

بِهَٰدِىguidebihādī
ٱلْعُمْىِthe blindl-ʿum'yi
عَنfromʿan
ضَلَٰلَتِهِمْtheir errorḍalālatihim
إِنNotin
تُسْمِعُyou can cause to heartus'miʿu
إِلَّاexceptillā
مَن(those) whoman
يُؤْمِنُbelieveyu'minu
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاin Our Signsbiāyātinā
فَهُمso theyfahum
مُّسْلِمُونَ(are) Muslimsmus'limūna
82

۞ وَإِذَا وَقَعَ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَخْرَجْنَا لَهُمْ دَآبَّةًۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ تُكَلِّمُهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا لَا يُوقِنُونَ

And when the word [i.e., decree] befalls them,1087 We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith].

  1. [1087] At the approach of the Hour.

وَإِذَاAnd whenwa-idhā
وَقَعَ(is) fulfilledwaqaʿa
ٱلْقَوْلُthe wordl-qawlu
عَلَيْهِمْagainst themʿalayhim
أَخْرَجْنَاWe will bring forthakhrajnā
لَهُمْfor themlahum
دَآبَّةًۭa creaturedābbatan
مِّنَfrommina
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
تُكَلِّمُهُمْspeaking to themtukallimuhum
أَنَّthatanna
ٱلنَّاسَthe peoplel-nāsa
كَانُوا۟werekānū
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاof Our Signsbiāyātinā
لَاnot
يُوقِنُونَcertainyūqinūna
83

وَيَوْمَ نَحْشُرُ مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةٍۢ فَوْجًۭا مِّمَّن يُكَذِّبُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا فَهُمْ يُوزَعُونَ

And [warn of] the Day when We will gather from every nation a company of those who deny Our signs, and they will be [driven] in rows

Word by Word
وَيَوْمَAnd (the) Daywayawma
نَحْشُرُWe will gathernaḥshuru
مِنfrommin
كُلِّeverykulli
أُمَّةٍۢnationummatin
فَوْجًۭاa troopfawjan
مِّمَّنof (those) whomimman
يُكَذِّبُdenyyukadhibu
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاOur Signsbiāyātinā
فَهُمْand theyfahum
يُوزَعُونَwill be set in rowsyūzaʿūna
84

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءُو قَالَ أَكَذَّبْتُم بِـَٔايَٰتِى وَلَمْ تُحِيطُوا۟ بِهَا عِلْمًا أَمَّاذَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

Until, when they arrive [at the place of Judgement], He will say, "Did you deny My signs while you encompassed them not in knowledge, or what [was it that] you were doing?"

حَتَّىٰٓUntilḥattā
إِذَاwhenidhā
جَآءُوthey comejāū
قَالَHe will sayqāla
أَكَذَّبْتُمDid you denyakadhabtum
بِـَٔايَٰتِىMy Signsbiāyātī
وَلَمْwhile notwalam
تُحِيطُوا۟you encompassedtuḥīṭū
بِهَاthembihā
عِلْمًا(in) knowledgeʿil'man
أَمَّاذَاor whatammādhā
كُنتُمْyou used (to)kuntum
تَعْمَلُونَdotaʿmalūna
85

وَوَقَعَ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِم بِمَا ظَلَمُوا۟ فَهُمْ لَا يَنطِقُونَ

And the decree will befall them1088 for the wrong they did, and they will not [be able to] speak.

  1. [1088] Allāh's decree will come into effect upon them, and His promise will be fulfilled.

وَوَقَعَAnd (will be) fulfilledwawaqaʿa
ٱلْقَوْلُthe wordl-qawlu
عَلَيْهِمagainst themʿalayhim
بِمَاbecausebimā
ظَلَمُوا۟they wrongedẓalamū
فَهُمْand theyfahum
لَا(will) not
يَنطِقُونَspeakyanṭiqūna
86

أَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّا جَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِيَسْكُنُوا۟ فِيهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ

Do they not see that We made the night that they may rest therein and the day giving sight? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

يَرَوْا۟they seeyaraw
أَنَّاthat Weannā
جَعَلْنَا[We] have madejaʿalnā
ٱلَّيْلَthe nightal-layla
لِيَسْكُنُوا۟that they may restliyaskunū
فِيهِin itfīhi
وَٱلنَّهَارَand the daywal-nahāra
مُبْصِرًاgiving visibilitymub'ṣiran
إِنَّIndeedinna
فِىin
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
لَءَايَٰتٍۢsurely (are) Signslaāyātin
لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a peopleliqawmin
يُؤْمِنُونَwho believeyu'minūna
87

وَيَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَفَزِعَ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ وَكُلٌّ أَتَوْهُ دَٰخِرِينَ

And [warn of] the Day the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified except whom Allāh wills. And all will come to Him humbled.

وَيَوْمَAnd (the) Daywayawma
يُنفَخُwill be blownyunfakhu
فِى[in]
ٱلصُّورِthe trumpetl-ṣūri
فَفَزِعَand will be terrifiedfafaziʿa
مَنwhoeverman
فِى(is) in
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwāti
وَمَنand whoeverwaman
فِى(is) in
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
إِلَّاexceptillā
مَنwhomman
شَآءَAllah willsshāa
ٱللَّهُAllah willsl-lahu
وَكُلٌّAnd allwakullun
أَتَوْهُ(will) come to Himatawhu
دَٰخِرِينَhumbleddākhirīna
88

وَتَرَى ٱلْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةًۭ وَهِىَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ ٱلسَّحَابِ ۚ صُنْعَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَفْعَلُونَ

And you see the mountains, thinking them motionless,1089 while they will pass as the passing of clouds. [It is] the work of Allāh, who perfected all things. Indeed, He is Aware of that which you do.

  1. [1089] Or "solid and rigid."

وَتَرَىAnd you seewatarā
ٱلْجِبَالَthe mountainsl-jibāla
تَحْسَبُهَاthinking themtaḥsabuhā
جَامِدَةًۭfirmly fixedjāmidatan
وَهِىَwhile theywahiya
تَمُرُّwill passtamurru
مَرَّ(as the) passingmarra
ٱلسَّحَابِ(of) the cloudsl-saḥābi
صُنْعَ(The) Workṣun'ʿa
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
ٱلَّذِىٓWhoalladhī
أَتْقَنَperfectedatqana
كُلَّallkulla
شَىْءٍthingsshayin
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, Heinnahu
خَبِيرٌۢ(is) All-Awarekhabīrun
بِمَاof whatbimā
تَفْعَلُونَyou dotafʿalūna
89

مَن جَآءَ بِٱلْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُۥ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْهَا وَهُم مِّن فَزَعٍۢ يَوْمَئِذٍ ءَامِنُونَ

Whoever comes [at Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it, and they, from the terror of that Day, will be safe.

فَلَهُۥthen for himfalahu
خَيْرٌۭ(will be) betterkhayrun
مِّنْهَاthan itmin'hā

فَزَعٍۢ(the) terrorfazaʿin
يَوْمَئِذٍ(of) that Dayyawma-idhin
ءَامِنُونَ(will be) safeāminūna
90

وَمَن جَآءَ بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ فَكُبَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ فِى ٱلنَّارِ هَلْ تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

And whoever comes with an evil deed1090 - their faces will be overturned into the Fire, [and it will be said], "Are you recompensed except for what you used to do?"

  1. [1090] Without having repented. It may refer generally to any sin or more specifically to association of another with Allāh.

بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِwith the evilbil-sayi-ati
فَكُبَّتْwill be cast downfakubbat
وُجُوهُهُمْtheir faceswujūhuhum
فِىin
ٱلنَّارِthe Firel-nāri
هَلْArehal
تُجْزَوْنَyou recompensedtuj'zawna
إِلَّاexceptillā
مَا(for) what
كُنتُمْyou used (to)kuntum
تَعْمَلُونَdotaʿmalūna
91

إِنَّمَآ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ رَبَّ هَٰذِهِ ٱلْبَلْدَةِ ٱلَّذِى حَرَّمَهَا وَلَهُۥ كُلُّ شَىْءٍۢ ۖ وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

[Say, O Muḥammad], "I have only been commanded to worship the Lord of this city,1091 who made it sacred and to whom [belongs] all things. And I am commanded to be of the Muslims [i.e., those who submit to Allāh]

  1. [1091] Or region, meaning Makkah and its surroundings.

حَرَّمَهَاmade it sacredḥarramahā
وَلَهُۥand to Him (belongs)walahu
كُلُّallkullu
شَىْءٍۢthingsshayin
وَأُمِرْتُAnd I am commandedwa-umir'tu
أَنْthatan
أَكُونَI beakūna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsl-mus'limīna
92

وَأَنْ أَتْلُوَا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ ۖ فَمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ فَإِنَّمَا يَهْتَدِى لِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ وَمَن ضَلَّ فَقُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُنذِرِينَ

And to recite the Qur’ān." And whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] himself; and whoever strays - say, "I am only [one] of the warners."

وَأَنْAnd thatwa-an
أَتْلُوَا۟I reciteatluwā
ٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quranl-qur'āna
فَمَنِAnd whoeverfamani
ٱهْتَدَىٰaccepts guidanceih'tadā
فَإِنَّمَاthen onlyfa-innamā
يَهْتَدِىhe accepts guidanceyahtadī
لِنَفْسِهِۦfor himselflinafsihi
وَمَنand whoeverwaman
ضَلَّgoes astrayḍalla
فَقُلْthen sayfaqul
إِنَّمَآOnlyinnamā
أَنَا۠I amanā
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُنذِرِينَthe warnersl-mundhirīna
93

وَقُلِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ سَيُرِيكُمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ فَتَعْرِفُونَهَا ۚ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

And say, "[All] praise is [due] to Allāh. He will show you His signs, and you will recognize them. And your Lord is not unaware of what you do."

وَقُلِAnd saywaquli
ٱلْحَمْدُAll praise (be)l-ḥamdu
لِلَّهِto Allahlillahi
سَيُرِيكُمْHe will show yousayurīkum
ءَايَٰتِهِۦHis Signsāyātihi
فَتَعْرِفُونَهَاand you will recognize themfataʿrifūnahā
وَمَاAnd your Lord is notwamā
رَبُّكَAnd your Lord is notrabbuka
بِغَٰفِلٍunawarebighāfilin
عَمَّاof whatʿammā
تَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūna
