So We took him and his soldiers and threw them into the sea.1104 So see how was the end of the wrongdoers.

  1. [1104] Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) caused them to leave all their worldly wealth behind and enter the sea in pursuit of the Children of Israel. See 26:52-66.

About This Surah

Surah Al-Qasas follows Moses from endangered infancy through exile, calling, confrontation, and deliverance, then closes with Qarun’s wealth and collapse. Women repeatedly act with courage and judgment: Moses’ mother, sister, the women at the well, and Pharaoh’s wife. The chapter tests political and economic power, teaching that divine care does not excuse passivity and that wealth is neither proof of merit nor a guaranteed reward for recitation.

Al-Qasas begins under a regime that divides people, weakens a population, and kills sons. Moses’ mother receives reassurance but also takes practical action: she nurses, places him in the river, and sends his sister to observe. Pharaoh’s wife intervenes, while Moses’ sister guides the household toward his mother. Divine care works through courageous human decisions rather than passive fatalism.

As an adult, Moses intervenes in a conflict and unintentionally causes a death. He acknowledges wrongdoing, seeks forgiveness, refuses to support criminals, and leaves after a warning. The account must not be used to excuse uncontrolled force; remorse, accountability, and changed conduct are central.

In Midian, Moses helps two women at the well, prays in need, is invited through one woman’s recommendation, works under an agreed term, and forms a family. The narrative should not be converted into a guaranteed marriage or employment formula. On his return, Moses encounters the fire, receives signs, and asks that Aaron support his speech before Pharaoh.

Pharaoh’s arrogance, Haman’s service to power, and the later story of Qarun expose political and economic domination. Qarun attributes wealth to his knowledge, displays it, rejects counsel, and is swallowed with his dwelling. His fall condemns arrogance and corruption, not wealth itself, and does not promise that piety automatically produces material prosperity.

The closing reminds the Messenger that he cannot guide everyone he loves and that final guidance belongs to God. This must not become emotional blame when a relative chooses differently. The surah joins trust, action, repentance, migration, work, resistance to tyranny, and disciplined use of wealth.

Core Themes

  • Divine care working through responsible action
  • Repentance after unintended harm
  • Women exercising courage and sound judgment
  • Migration, work, and agreed responsibility
  • Political tyranny and economic arrogance
  • Guidance beyond personal control

Structure

Verses 1–21: oppression, infancy, and unintended killing1-21

Pharaoh’s policy, Moses’ rescue through several women, his growth, unintended killing, repentance, and flight establish vulnerability, action, responsibility, and political danger.

Verses 22–35: Midian, work, family, and commissioning22-35

Moses helps at the well, receives shelter and work, completes an agreed term, encounters the fire, and asks for Aaron’s assistance in the mission.

Verses 36–50: Pharaoh’s arrogance and rejected signs36-50

Moses and Aaron confront a regime that manufactures authority, mocks revelation, and pursues them until consequence, while the Quran answers similar objections.

Verses 51–70: revelation, response, and limits of guidance51-70

People of earlier scripture, public objections, security claims, destroyed towns, judgment, and divine choice lead to the statement that loved ones cannot be personally guided at will.

Verses 71–88: signs, Qarun, and final devotion71-88

Night and day, final questioning, Qarun’s wealth and collapse, the lasting home, and exclusive worship expose temporary power and direct the Messenger toward God.

Reading Guide

Track the women as decision-makers

Moses survives through his mother’s action, his sister’s observation, Pharaoh’s wife’s intervention, and later a woman’s employment recommendation. Do not erase their agency.

Keep repentance inside the conflict account

Moses does not celebrate unintended killing. He acknowledges wrong, seeks forgiveness, changes alignment, and leaves danger; the passage cannot license impulsive violence.

Do not market Midian as a marriage formula

Help, prayer, character, invitation, work, and marriage occur in one life story. They establish no fixed count, timetable, or guarantee for employment or a spouse.

Read Qarun against prosperity theology

Wealth is a test, not automatic evidence of favor. The account condemns boastful attribution and corrupt display without declaring every wealthy person guilty.

Key Passages

Moses’ mother and sister 7-13

Reassurance is joined to nursing, concealment, placement in the river, observation, and careful reunion. Trust in God does not eliminate planning, courage, or responsible human action. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Unintended death, repentance, and departure 15-21

Moses intervenes, causes a death, acknowledges wrongdoing, seeks forgiveness, refuses criminal support, receives a warning, and leaves. Accountability and change prevent the episode from becoming a defense of violence. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

The well, invitation, and work agreement 23-28

Moses assists two women without exploitation, receives an invitation, tells his story, and accepts an agreed work term. The narrative values safety, character, consent, and contractual clarity. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

The limits of personal guidance 56

The Messenger cannot cause guidance in everyone he loves. The verse protects against spiritual coercion and against blaming parents, spouses, or relatives for another adult’s independent response. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Qarun’s wealth and collapse 76-82

Qarun boasts of knowledge, rejects counsel to seek the lasting home while doing good, and dazzles observers before collapse. Wealth is exposed as a test rather than proof of spiritual rank. Read the cited verses as a unit; their immediate argument does not become a stand-alone ruling, diagnosis, prediction, or guaranteed result.

Recitation Note

No exclusive time, fixed repetition count, or guaranteed worldly outcome is asserted here for reciting Surah Al-Qasas. Reading it is worship and study; any separate claim about protection, healing, marriage, children, provision, or success requires independently verified evidence and narrow wording.

Interpretation Limits

  • Moses’ unintended killing does not authorize impulsive or private violence.
  • The Midian account is not a guaranteed marriage, employment, or provision formula.
  • Verse 28:56 must not be used to blame relatives for another person’s choices.
  • Qarun’s story rejects arrogance and corruption, not lawful wealth or every wealthy person.
