51

وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ

And Thamūd - and He did not spare [them] -

وَثَمُودَا۟And Thamudwathamūdā
فَمَآso notfamā
أَبْقَىٰHe sparedabqā
52

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍۢ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ

And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.

نُوحٍۢ(of) Nuhnūḥin
مِّنbeforemin
قَبْلُbeforeqablu
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyinnahum

أَظْلَمَmore unjustaẓlama
وَأَطْغَىٰand more rebelliouswa-aṭghā
53

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ

And the overturned towns1573 He hurled down

  1. [1573] Whose inhabitants defied Prophet Lot.

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَAnd the overturned citieswal-mu'tafikata
أَهْوَىٰHe overthrewahwā
54

فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ

And covered them by that which He covered.1574

  1. [1574] i.e., a rain of stones.

غَشَّىٰcoveredghashā
55

فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ

Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?

فَبِأَىِّThen which (of)fabi-ayyi
ءَالَآءِthe Favorsālāi
رَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbika
تَتَمَارَىٰwill you doubttatamārā
56

هَٰذَا نَذِيرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ

This [Prophet (ﷺ)] is a warner from [i.e., like] the former warners.

نَذِيرٌۭ(is) a warnernadhīrun
مِّنَfrommina
ٱلنُّذُرِthe warnersl-nudhuri
ٱلْأُولَىٰٓthe formerl-ūlā
57

أَزِفَتِ ٱلْءَازِفَةُ

The Approaching Day has approached.

ٱلْءَازِفَةُthe Approaching Dayl-āzifatu
58

لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

Of it, [from those] besides Allāh, there is no remover.

ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
كَاشِفَةٌany removerkāshifatun
59

أَفَمِنْ هَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ

Then at this statement do you wonder?

ٱلْحَدِيثِstatementl-ḥadīthi
تَعْجَبُونَyou wondertaʿjabūna
60

وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ

And you laugh and do not weep

وَتَضْحَكُونَAnd you laughwataḍḥakūna
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
تَبْكُونَweeptabkūna
61

وَأَنتُمْ سَٰمِدُونَ

While you are proudly sporting?1575

  1. [1575] Additional meanings are "singing [with expanded chest]," "heedless," or "lost in vain amusements."

62

فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩

So prostrate to Allāh and worship [Him].

وَٱعْبُدُوا۟and worship (Him)wa-uʿ'budū
