It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific.116 As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allāh. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding,

  1. [116] Those which are stated in such a way that they are open to more than one interpretation or whose meaning is known only to Allāh, such as the opening letters of certain sūrahs.

Already there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met [in combat at Badr] - one fighting in the cause of Allāh and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight.118 But Allāh supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that is a lesson for those of vision.

  1. [118] The believers saw the disbelievers to be double their own number preceding the battle of Badr, while, in fact, they were three times their number.

So if they argue with you, say, "I have submitted myself to Allāh [in Islām], and [so have] those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture and [to] the unlearned,119 "Have you submitted yourselves?" And if they submit [in Islām], they are rightly guided; but if they turn away - then upon you is only the [duty of] notification. And Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants.

So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh provides for whom He wills without account."

About This Surah

Surah Ali 'Imran joins theological clarity with communal steadfastness. It affirms revelation, teaches restraint around ambiguous passages, recounts the family of Imran and the missions of Mary and Jesus, invites the People of the Book to worship God alone, and examines the Battle of Uhud. Across debate, loss, fear, and worldly attraction, the surah asks whether professed faith becomes disciplined trust and responsible action.

Ali 'Imran opens by presenting the Quran as confirmation of earlier revelation and by distinguishing verses that are clear in meaning from others that can be pursued irresponsibly. The warning is directed at people who seek confusion by isolating ambiguity. It does not make difficult verses disposable; it establishes humility, coherence, and prayer as safeguards for interpretation.

The family of Imran section begins with dedication, prayer, and Mary’s upbringing. The announcement and mission of Jesus are set within divine creation and prophetic service. The surah honors Mary and Jesus while rejecting worship directed to a prophet. Because these passages remain central to Muslim-Christian dialogue, their Quranic claims should be stated accurately without caricaturing contemporary Christians or pretending that a short summary resolves every theological disagreement.

The middle sections discuss scripture, Abraham, covenant, and a “common word” centered on worship of God alone. Criticism is directed at contested claims, concealment, and conduct, yet the chapter also distinguishes individuals among the People of the Book. Its language cannot responsibly be converted into a blanket description of every Jewish or Christian person.

Calls to hold firmly together, maintain moral witness, and resist division lead into the extended account of Uhud. The narrative examines preparation, disobedience, rumor, grief, courage, retreat, mercy, consultation, and recovery. Its conflict passages belong to a named prophetic-era battle and to communal authority; they are not free-standing permissions for private modern violence.

The closing movement answers material temptation and public hostility with remembrance, reflection on creation, prayer, patience, and vigilance. The surah’s architecture therefore moves from interpretive discipline to prophetic history, communal testing, and a final practice of steadfast faith.

Core Themes

  • Clear revelation governing engagement with ambiguity
  • Mary and Jesus within Quranic monotheism
  • Interfaith disagreement handled without blanket hostility
  • Communal unity disciplined by truth and accountability
  • Uhud as a study of defeat, mercy, and reform
  • Reflection and prayer sustaining steadfastness

Structure

Verses 1–32: revelation and interpretive discipline1-32

The opening affirms divine revelation, distinguishes clear and ambiguous passages, records the prayer of those grounded in knowledge, and calls for obedience. Interpretation is framed by the whole message rather than by fascination with uncertainty.

Verses 33–63: the family of Imran, Mary, and Jesus33-63

Dedication, Mary’s upbringing, the announcement of Jesus, his signs, disciples, and mission unfold within worship of the one God. The section honors prophetic figures while setting boundaries against divinization.

Verses 64–101: scripture, Abraham, and contested claims64-101

The surah invites the People of the Book to a common word, discusses Abraham’s legacy, and criticizes concealment or manipulation. Assertions and conduct are debated without erasing distinctions among individuals.

Verses 102–120: unity and moral witness102-120

Believers are called to God-consciousness, collective attachment to divine guidance, moral responsibility, and resistance to division. Community boundaries are joined to ethical duties rather than mere identity claims.

Verses 121–180: Uhud, loss, and recovery121-180

The battle account interprets decisions before, during, and after Uhud. Obedience, rumor, fear, martyrdom, grief, consultation, and divine mercy turn military loss into communal moral education.

Verses 181–200: accountability, reflection, and endurance181-200

The ending confronts hostile claims, warns against mistaking temporary ease for final success, and culminates in reflection on creation, sustained remembrance, prayer, patience, and vigilance.

Reading Guide

Begin with the rule for ambiguous passages

Read verses 7–9 before extracting a debated phrase. Their combination of clear foundations, humility, and prayer establishes the surah’s own method for avoiding interpretations driven by confusion or polemical appetite.

Keep Mary and Jesus inside the surah’s argument

Honor the detail and dignity of the narrative while preserving its monotheistic frame. Describe what the Quran asserts without turning theological disagreement into contempt for present-day people.

Read Uhud as a complete moral sequence

Follow preparation, error, reversal, grief, mercy, consultation, and renewed courage. Isolating battlefield language from that sequence removes the self-critique and accountable authority that give it meaning.

Let the final prayers answer the earlier trials

Verses 190–200 transform reflection into remembrance, petition, and perseverance. Compare their language with the chapter’s earlier tests of interpretation, identity, material desire, and communal fear.

Key Passages

Clear foundations and interpretive humility 7-9

These verses distinguish clear foundations from passages pursued for confusion and preserve a prayer against hearts turning away. They provide an internal discipline for reading the surah’s debated theological and conflict material. Its location in the chapter connects the preceding argument with the response that follows, so the surrounding verses should remain visible.

Mary’s dedication and Jesus announced 35-47

The sequence moves from the prayer of Imran’s family through Mary’s upbringing to the announcement of Jesus. Its devotional tone and prophetic setting should remain visible in interfaith explanation. The surrounding verses define its immediate purpose and the limits that prevent a careless, polemical, or overbroad modern application.

Discipleship and a common word 52-64

The response of the disciples and the invitation to a common word connect loyalty to Jesus with worship of God alone. The passage defines a Quranic theological appeal rather than a slogan for social hostility.

Unity without abandoning moral truth 102-105

Collective attachment to divine guidance is paired with remembrance of reconciliation and a warning against division after clear evidence. Unity is therefore a disciplined ethical responsibility, not suppression of every disagreement. Its force depends on the contrast and progression established around it, not on treating selected lines as a detached slogan.

The opening movement of Uhud 121-129

The Messenger’s departure, battle positions, anxiety, and reminders of divine help establish a concrete historical setting. Later commands and evaluations should be read within this named communal crisis. The passage remains part of the surah’s wider moral sequence, which supplies the proper direction for reflection, restraint, and response.

Error, mercy, and consultation 152-159

Disobedience and dispute are acknowledged without making failure the chapter’s final word. Pardon, gentleness, consultation, decision, and trust form the surah’s program for recovery after collective error. This context protects the passage from becoming an isolated shortcut and preserves the chapter’s balance of warning, duty, and mercy.

Creation, prayer, and steadfastness 190-200

Reflection on the heavens and earth becomes remembrance and a series of prayers. The final command gathers patience, perseverance, vigilance, and God-consciousness as the mature response to the chapter’s trials. Its role becomes clearer when adjacent verses remain in view and the chapter’s movement is allowed to frame the reader’s conclusions.

Recitation Note

No exclusive time, fixed repetition count, or guaranteed worldly outcome is asserted in this batch for reciting Surah Ali 'Imran. The surah may be read as Quran for worship and study, but any additional special-merit claim requires a separately verified exact locator and careful wording.

Interpretation Limits

  • Verses concerning Mary, Jesus, and the People of the Book should report Quranic claims accurately without stereotyping contemporary communities.
  • Verses 3:121–175 concern the Battle of Uhud and communal authority; they do not authorize private violence or decontextualized modern warfare instructions.
  • Ambiguous passages should not be used to override clear Quranic foundations or to claim certainty where the wording remains debated.
  • This overview does not replace detailed theology, tafsir, international-law analysis, or qualified legal judgment.
