51

أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِهِمْ أَنَّآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَرَحْمَةًۭ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ

And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.

أَنَّآthat Weannā
أَنزَلْنَاrevealedanzalnā
عَلَيْكَto youʿalayka
ٱلْكِتَٰبَthe Bookl-kitāba
يُتْلَىٰ(which) is recitedyut'lā
عَلَيْهِمْto themʿalayhim
إِنَّIndeedinna
فِىin
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
لَرَحْمَةًۭsurely is a mercylaraḥmatan
وَذِكْرَىٰand a reminderwadhik'rā
لِقَوْمٍۢfor a peopleliqawmin
يُؤْمِنُونَwho believeyu'minūna
52

قُلْ كَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكُمْ شَهِيدًۭا ۖ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَٰسِرُونَ

Say, "Sufficient is Allāh between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allāh - it is those who are the losers."

كَفَىٰSufficient iskafā
بِٱللَّهِAllahbil-lahi
بَيْنِىbetween mebaynī
وَبَيْنَكُمْand between youwabaynakum
شَهِيدًۭا(as) a Witnessshahīdan
يَعْلَمُHe knowsyaʿlamu
مَاwhat
فِى(is) in
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
ءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanū
بِٱلْبَٰطِلِin [the] falsehoodbil-bāṭili
وَكَفَرُوا۟and disbelievewakafarū
بِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahi
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَthoseulāika
هُمُtheyhumu
ٱلْخَٰسِرُونَ(are) the losersl-khāsirūna
53

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِٱلْعَذَابِ ۚ وَلَوْلَآ أَجَلٌۭ مُّسَمًّۭى لَّجَآءَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّهُم بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَAnd they ask you to hastenwayastaʿjilūnaka
بِٱلْعَذَابِ[with] the punishmentbil-ʿadhābi
وَلَوْلَآAnd if notwalawlā
أَجَلٌۭ(for) a termajalun
مُّسَمًّۭىappointedmusamman
لَّجَآءَهُمُsurely (would) have come to themlajāahumu
ٱلْعَذَابُthe punishmentl-ʿadhābu
وَلَيَأْتِيَنَّهُمBut it will surely come to themwalayatiyannahum
بَغْتَةًۭsuddenlybaghtatan
وَهُمْwhile theywahum
لَا(do) not
يَشْعُرُونَperceiveyashʿurūna
54

يَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِٱلْعَذَابِ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌۢ بِٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

They urge you to hasten the punishment. And indeed, Hell will be encompassing of the disbelievers

يَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَThey ask you to hastenyastaʿjilūnaka
بِٱلْعَذَابِthe punishmentbil-ʿadhābi
وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-inna
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannama
لَمُحِيطَةٌۢwill surely, encompasslamuḥīṭatun
بِٱلْكَٰفِرِينَthe disbelieversbil-kāfirīna
55

يَوْمَ يَغْشَىٰهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِن تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِمْ وَيَقُولُ ذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

On the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do."

يَوْمَOn (the) Dayyawma
يَغْشَىٰهُمُwill cover themyaghshāhumu
ٱلْعَذَابُthe punishmentl-ʿadhābu
مِنfrommin
فَوْقِهِمْabove themfawqihim
وَمِنand fromwamin
تَحْتِbelowtaḥti
أَرْجُلِهِمْtheir feetarjulihim
وَيَقُولُand He will saywayaqūlu
ذُوقُوا۟Tastedhūqū
مَاwhat
كُنتُمْyou usedkuntum
تَعْمَلُونَ(to) dotaʿmalūna
56

يَٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ أَرْضِى وَٰسِعَةٌۭ فَإِيَّٰىَ فَٱعْبُدُونِ

O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me.

يَٰعِبَادِىَO My servantsyāʿibādiya
ٱلَّذِينَwhoalladhīna
ءَامَنُوٓا۟believeāmanū
إِنَّIndeedinna
أَرْضِىMy eartharḍī
وَٰسِعَةٌۭ(is) spaciouswāsiʿatun
فَإِيَّٰىَso onlyfa-iyyāya
فَٱعْبُدُونِworship Mefa-uʿ'budūni
57

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖ ثُمَّ إِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ

Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.

نَفْسٍۢsoulnafsin
ذَآئِقَةُ(will) tastedhāiqatu
ٱلْمَوْتِthe deathl-mawti
ثُمَّThenthumma
إِلَيْنَاto Usilaynā
تُرْجَعُونَyou will be returnedtur'jaʿūna
58

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ غُرَفًۭا تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ نِعْمَ أَجْرُ ٱلْعَٰمِلِينَ

And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
ءَامَنُوا۟believeāmanū
وَعَمِلُوا۟and dowaʿamilū
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ[the] righteous deedsl-ṣāliḥāti
لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُمsurely We will give them a placelanubawwi-annahum
مِّنَinmina
ٱلْجَنَّةِParadisel-janati
غُرَفًۭاlofty dwellingsghurafan
تَجْرِىflowtajrī
مِنfrommin
تَحْتِهَاunderneath ittaḥtihā
ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُthe riversl-anhāru
خَٰلِدِينَwill abide foreverkhālidīna
فِيهَاin itfīhā
نِعْمَExcellent isniʿ'ma
أَجْرُ(the) rewardajru
ٱلْعَٰمِلِينَ(of) the workersl-ʿāmilīna
59

ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ

Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely.

Word by Word
ٱلَّذِينَThose whoalladhīna
صَبَرُوا۟(are) patientṣabarū
وَعَلَىٰand uponwaʿalā
رَبِّهِمْtheir Lordrabbihim
يَتَوَكَّلُونَput their trustyatawakkalūna
60

وَكَأَيِّن مِّن دَآبَّةٍۢ لَّا تَحْمِلُ رِزْقَهَا ٱللَّهُ يَرْزُقُهَا وَإِيَّاكُمْ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allāh provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

وَكَأَيِّنAnd how manywaka-ayyin
مِّنofmin
دَآبَّةٍۢa creaturedābbatin
لَّا(does) not
تَحْمِلُcarrytaḥmilu
رِزْقَهَاits provisionriz'qahā
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
يَرْزُقُهَاprovides (for) ityarzuquhā
وَإِيَّاكُمْand (for) youwa-iyyākum
وَهُوَAnd Hewahuwa
ٱلسَّمِيعُ(is) the All-Hearerl-samīʿu
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knowerl-ʿalīmu
61

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُم مَّنْ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ لَيَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Then how are they deluded?

وَلَئِنAnd ifwala-in
سَأَلْتَهُمyou ask themsa-altahum
مَّنْWhoman
خَلَقَcreatedkhalaqa
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضَand the earthwal-arḍa
وَسَخَّرَand subjectedwasakhara
ٱلشَّمْسَthe sunl-shamsa
وَٱلْقَمَرَand the moonwal-qamara
لَيَقُولُنَّSurely they would saylayaqūlunna
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
فَأَنَّىٰThen howfa-annā
يُؤْفَكُونَare they deludedyu'fakūna
62

ٱللَّهُ يَبْسُطُ ٱلرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَقْدِرُ لَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌۭ

Allāh extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.

يَبْسُطُextendsyabsuṭu
ٱلرِّزْقَthe provisionl-riz'qa
لِمَنfor whomliman
يَشَآءُHe willsyashāu
مِنْofmin
عِبَادِهِۦHis slavesʿibādihi
وَيَقْدِرُand restrictswayaqdiru
لَهُۥٓfor himlahu
إِنَّIndeedinna
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
بِكُلِّof everybikulli
شَىْءٍthingshayin
عَلِيمٌۭ(is) All-Knowerʿalīmun
63

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُم مَّن نَّزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَوْتِهَا لَيَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُ ۚ قُلِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ۚ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Praise to Allāh"; but most of them do not reason.

سَأَلْتَهُمyou ask themsa-altahum

نَّزَّلَsends downnazzala
مِنَfrommina
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyl-samāi
مَآءًۭwatermāan
فَأَحْيَاand gives lifefa-aḥyā
بِهِtherebybihi
ٱلْأَرْضَ(to) the earthl-arḍa
مِنۢaftermin
بَعْدِafterbaʿdi
مَوْتِهَاits deathmawtihā
لَيَقُولُنَّSurely, they would saylayaqūlunna
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
قُلِSayquli
ٱلْحَمْدُAll Praisesl-ḥamdu
لِلَّهِ(are) for Allahlillahi
بَلْButbal
أَكْثَرُهُمْmost of themaktharuhum
لَا(do) not
يَعْقِلُونَuse reasonyaʿqilūna
64

وَمَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا لَهْوٌۭ وَلَعِبٌۭ ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ لَهِىَ ٱلْحَيَوَانُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

وَمَاAnd notwamā
هَٰذِهِ(is) thishādhihi
ٱلْحَيَوٰةُlifel-ḥayatu
ٱلدُّنْيَآ(of) the worldl-dun'yā
إِلَّاbutillā
لَهْوٌۭamusementlahwun
وَلَعِبٌۭand playwalaʿibun
وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-inna
ٱلدَّارَthe Homel-dāra
ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ(of) the Hereafterl-ākhirata
لَهِىَsurely, itlahiya
ٱلْحَيَوَانُ(is) the lifel-ḥayawānu
لَوْif onlylaw
كَانُوا۟theykānū
يَعْلَمُونَknowyaʿlamūna
65

فَإِذَا رَكِبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْبَرِّ إِذَا هُمْ يُشْرِكُونَ

And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allāh, sincere to Him in religion [i.e., faith and hope]. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him

فَإِذَاAnd whenfa-idhā
رَكِبُوا۟they embarkrakibū
فِى[in]
ٱلْفُلْكِthe shipl-ful'ki
دَعَوُا۟they calldaʿawū
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
مُخْلِصِينَ(being) sinceremukh'liṣīna
لَهُto Himlahu
ٱلدِّينَ(in) the religionl-dīna
فَلَمَّاBut whenfalammā
نَجَّىٰهُمْHe delivers themnajjāhum
إِلَىtoilā
ٱلْبَرِّthe landl-bari
إِذَاbeholdidhā
هُمْtheyhum
يُشْرِكُونَassociate partners (with Him)yush'rikūna
66

لِيَكْفُرُوا۟ بِمَآ ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ وَلِيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.1134

  1. [1134] Grammatically, the verse may also be read as a threat, i.e., "So let them deny what We have granted them and let them enjoy themselves, for they are going to know."

لِيَكْفُرُوا۟So that they may denyliyakfurū
بِمَآ[in] whatbimā
ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْWe have given themātaynāhum
وَلِيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟and they may enjoy (themselves)waliyatamattaʿū
فَسَوْفَBut soonfasawfa
يَعْلَمُونَthey will knowyaʿlamūna
67

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّا جَعَلْنَا حَرَمًا ءَامِنًۭا وَيُتَخَطَّفُ ٱلنَّاسُ مِنْ حَوْلِهِمْ ۚ أَفَبِٱلْبَٰطِلِ يُؤْمِنُونَ وَبِنِعْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ يَكْفُرُونَ

Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away1135 all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?

  1. [1135] i.e., killed and taken captive.

يَرَوْا۟they seeyaraw
أَنَّاthat Weannā
جَعَلْنَاhave madejaʿalnā
حَرَمًاa Sanctuaryḥaraman
ءَامِنًۭاsecureāminan
وَيُتَخَطَّفُwhile are being taken awaywayutakhaṭṭafu
ٱلنَّاسُthe peoplel-nāsu
مِنْaround themmin
حَوْلِهِمْaround themḥawlihim
أَفَبِٱلْبَٰطِلِThen do in (the) falsehoodafabil-bāṭili
يُؤْمِنُونَthey believeyu'minūna
وَبِنِعْمَةِand in (the) Favorwabiniʿ'mati
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
يَكْفُرُونَthey disbelieveyakfurūna
68

وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوْ كَذَّبَ بِٱلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُۥٓ ۚ أَلَيْسَ فِى جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًۭى لِّلْكَٰفِرِينَ

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?

وَمَنْAnd whowaman
أَظْلَمُ(is) more unjustaẓlamu
مِمَّنِthan (he) whomimmani
ٱفْتَرَىٰinventsif'tarā
عَلَىagainstʿalā
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
كَذِبًاa liekadhiban
أَوْoraw
كَذَّبَdenieskadhaba
بِٱلْحَقِّthe truthbil-ḥaqi
لَمَّاwhenlammā
جَآءَهُۥٓit has come to himjāahu
أَلَيْسَIs there notalaysa
فِىin
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannama
مَثْوًۭىan abodemathwan
لِّلْكَٰفِرِينَfor the disbelieverslil'kāfirīna
69

وَٱلَّذِينَ جَٰهَدُوا۟ فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمَعَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways.1136 And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good.

  1. [1136] The various ways and means to attain the acceptance and pleasure of Allāh.

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
جَٰهَدُوا۟strivejāhadū
فِينَاfor Usfīnā
لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْWe will surely, guide themlanahdiyannahum
سُبُلَنَا(to) Our wayssubulanā
وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-inna
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
لَمَعَsurely (is) withlamaʿa
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَthe good-doersl-muḥ'sinīna
