بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

أَلْهَىٰكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ

Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you

حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ ٱلْمَقَابِرَ

Until you visit the graveyards.¹⁹⁸⁰

[1980] i.e., remain in them temporarily, meaning until the Day of Resurrection. ↩

كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

No! You are going to know.

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

Then, no! You are going to know.

كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ ٱلْيَقِينِ

No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty...¹⁹⁸¹

لَتَرَوُنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ

You will surely see the Hellfire.

ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ ٱلْيَقِينِ

Then you will surely see it with the eye of certainty.¹⁹⁸²

ثُمَّ لَتُسْـَٔلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.¹⁹⁸³

About This Surah

Surah At-Takathur warns that rivalry for increase distracts people until they visit the graves. Repeated declarations of “you will know” strip accumulation of its false permanence. The chapter says people will see the blazing fire and be questioned that day about comforts, turning ordinary blessings into responsibilities rather than proof of worth.

Competing for more—whether wealth, followers, status or other countable advantages—distracts until death. The wording does not say that every form of growth is wrong; the problem is rivalry that absorbs attention and postpones accountability.

The repeated warning “you will know” intensifies the correction. Certain knowledge would prevent careless living, and the unseen consequence will become sight.

The chapter ends with questioning about comforts or blessings. Food, safety, health, time and other benefits may therefore be received with gratitude and responsibility, though the verse should not be used to invent a detailed interrogation script.

At-Takathur is especially resistant to popularity metrics becoming moral value. Numbers can be useful tools, but they cannot certify a person’s standing before God.
