بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

وَٱلْعَصْرِ

By time,¹⁹⁸⁵

[1985] An oath in which Allāh swears by time throughout the ages. ↩

إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَفِى خُسْرٍ

Indeed, mankind is in loss,

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ

Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

About This Surah

Surah Al-Asr compresses a complete moral program into three verses: human beings are in loss except those who combine faith, good action, mutual counsel to truth and mutual counsel to patience. Its communal verbs matter; truth and endurance are not merely private possessions but responsibilities believers help one another sustain.

The oath by time is followed by a universal diagnosis: humanity is in loss. Time passes whether or not it is used well, and status cannot recover it.

Four connected qualities form the exception. Faith is not isolated from good action; good action is not isolated from truth; truth is not sustained without patient endurance. Twice the surah uses mutual counsel, making community part of the answer.

The chapter should not be reduced to productivity advice. Its standard includes belief, moral conduct, truthful responsibility and steadfastness through difficulty. Nor should “counsel to truth” become license for humiliation; counsel remains accountable to the truth and ethics it claims to serve.
