201
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ
They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.
Word by Word ▾ لَا Not lā
يُؤْمِنُونَ they will believe yu'minūna
بِهِۦ in it bihi
حَتَّىٰ until ḥattā
يَرَوُا۟ they see yarawū
ٱلْعَذَابَ the punishment l-ʿadhāba
ٱلْأَلِيمَ [ the ] painful l-alīma
202
فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.
Word by Word ▾ فَيَأْتِيَهُم And it will come to them fayatiyahum
بَغْتَةًۭ suddenly baghtatan
وَهُمْ while they wahum
لَا (do) not lā
يَشْعُرُونَ perceive yashʿurūna
203
فَيَقُولُوا۟ هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنظَرُونَ
And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"
Word by Word ▾ فَيَقُولُوا۟ Then they will say fayaqūlū
هَلْ Are hal
نَحْنُ we naḥnu
مُنظَرُونَ (to be) reprieved munẓarūna
204
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ
So for Our punishment are they impatient?
Word by Word ▾ أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا So is it for Our punishment afabiʿadhābinā
يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ they wish to hasten yastaʿjilūna
205
أَفَرَءَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَٰهُمْ سِنِينَ
Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years
Word by Word ▾ أَفَرَءَيْتَ Then have you seen afara-ayta
إِن if in
مَّتَّعْنَٰهُمْ We let them enjoy mattaʿnāhum
سِنِينَ (for) years sinīna
206
ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ
And then there came to them that which they were promised?
Word by Word ▾ ثُمَّ Then thumma
جَآءَهُم comes to them jāahum
مَّا what mā
كَانُوا۟ they were kānū
يُوعَدُونَ promised yūʿadūna
207
مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُمَتَّعُونَ
They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.
Word by Word ▾ مَآ Not mā
أَغْنَىٰ (will) avail aghnā
عَنْهُم them ʿanhum
مَّا what mā
كَانُوا۟ enjoyment they were given kānū
يُمَتَّعُونَ enjoyment they were given yumattaʿūna
208
وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ
And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners
Word by Word ▾ وَمَآ And not wamā
أَهْلَكْنَا We destroyed ahlaknā
مِن any min
قَرْيَةٍ town qaryatin
إِلَّا but illā
لَهَا it had lahā
مُنذِرُونَ warners mundhirūna
209
ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ
As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.
Word by Word ▾ ذِكْرَىٰ (To) remind dhik'rā
وَمَا and not wamā
كُنَّا We are kunnā
ظَٰلِمِينَ unjust ẓālimīna
210
وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ
And the devils have not brought it [i.e., the revelation] down.1062 [1062] As was asserted by the disbelievers. Rather, it was brought by Gabriel, the Trustworthy Spirit. ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَمَا And not wamā
تَنَزَّلَتْ have brought it down tanazzalat
بِهِ have brought it down bihi
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ the devils l-shayāṭīnu
211
وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لَهُمْ وَمَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.
Word by Word ▾ وَمَا And not wamā
يَنۢبَغِى (it) suits yanbaghī
لَهُمْ [ for ] them lahum
وَمَا and not wamā
يَسْتَطِيعُونَ they are able yastaṭīʿūna
212
إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ ٱلسَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ
Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.1063 [1063] As mentioned in 72:9. ↩
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّهُمْ Indeed , they innahum
عَنِ from ʿani
ٱلسَّمْعِ the hearing l-samʿi
لَمَعْزُولُونَ (are) surely banished lamaʿzūlūna
213
فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُعَذَّبِينَ
So do not invoke1064 with Allāh another deity and [thus] be among the punished.
Word by Word ▾ فَلَا So (do) not falā
تَدْعُ invoke tadʿu
مَعَ with maʿa
ٱللَّهِ Allah l-lahi
إِلَٰهًا god ilāhan
ءَاخَرَ another ākhara
فَتَكُونَ lest you be fatakūna
مِنَ of mina
ٱلْمُعَذَّبِينَ those punished l-muʿadhabīna
214
وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ
And warn, [O Muḥammad], your closest kindred.
Word by Word ▾ وَأَنذِرْ And warn wa-andhir
عَشِيرَتَكَ your kindred ʿashīrataka
ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ [ the ] closest l-aqrabīna
215
وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to those who follow you of the believers.
Word by Word ▾ وَٱخْفِضْ And lower wa-ikh'fiḍ
جَنَاحَكَ your wing janāḥaka
لِمَنِ to (those) who limani
ٱتَّبَعَكَ follow you ittabaʿaka
مِنَ of mina
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ the believers l-mu'minīna
216
فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌۭ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."
Word by Word ▾ فَإِنْ Then if fa-in
عَصَوْكَ they disobey you ʿaṣawka
فَقُلْ then say faqul
إِنِّى Indeed , I am innī
بَرِىٓءٌۭ innocent barīon
مِّمَّا of what mimmā
تَعْمَلُونَ you do taʿmalūna
217
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
Word by Word ▾ وَتَوَكَّلْ And put (your) trust watawakkal
عَلَى in ʿalā
ٱلْعَزِيزِ the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi
ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful l-raḥīmi
218
ٱلَّذِى يَرَىٰكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ
Who sees you when you arise1065 [1065] From your bed at night for prayer while you are alone. ↩
Word by Word ▾ ٱلَّذِى The One Who alladhī
يَرَىٰكَ sees you yarāka
حِينَ when ḥīna
تَقُومُ you stand up taqūmu
219
وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِى ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ
And your movement among those who prostrate.1066 [1066] i.e., among those who pray with you in congregation. ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَتَقَلُّبَكَ And your movements wataqallubaka
فِى among fī
ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ those who prostrate l-sājidīna
220
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّهُۥ Indeed , He innahu
هُوَ [ He ] huwa
ٱلسَّمِيعُ (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu
ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
221
هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ
Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?
Word by Word ▾ هَلْ Shall hal
أُنَبِّئُكُمْ I inform you unabbi-ukum
عَلَىٰ upon ʿalā
مَن whom man
تَنَزَّلُ descend tanazzalu
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ the devils l-shayāṭīnu
222
تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍۢ
They descend upon every sinful liar.
Word by Word ▾ تَنَزَّلُ They descend tanazzalu
عَلَىٰ upon ʿalā
كُلِّ every kulli
أَفَّاكٍ liar affākin
أَثِيمٍۢ sinful athīmin
223
يُلْقُونَ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَٰذِبُونَ
They pass on what is heard,1067 and most of them are liars. [1067] This was before they were prevented, as described in 72:8-9. ↩
Word by Word ▾ يُلْقُونَ They pass on yul'qūna
ٱلسَّمْعَ (what is) heard l-samʿa
وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ and most of them wa-aktharuhum
كَٰذِبُونَ (are) liars kādhibūna
224
وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلْغَاوُۥنَ
And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them.
Word by Word ▾ وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ And the poets wal-shuʿarāu
يَتَّبِعُهُمُ follow them yattabiʿuhumu
ٱلْغَاوُۥنَ the deviators l-ghāwūna
225
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِى كُلِّ وَادٍۢ يَهِيمُونَ
Do you not see that in every valley they roam1068 [1068] Speaking lies indiscriminately and praising and disparaging others according to whim. ↩
Word by Word ▾ أَلَمْ Do not alam
تَرَ you see tara
أَنَّهُمْ that they annahum
فِى in fī
كُلِّ every kulli
وَادٍۢ valley wādin
يَهِيمُونَ [ they ] roam yahīmūna
226
وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ
And that they say what they do not do? -
Word by Word ▾ وَأَنَّهُمْ And that they wa-annahum
يَقُولُونَ say yaqūlūna
مَا what mā
لَا not lā
يَفْعَلُونَ they do yafʿalūna
227
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ ۗ وَسَيَعْلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَىَّ مُنقَلَبٍۢ يَنقَلِبُونَ
Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allāh often and defend [the Muslims]1069 after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned. [1069] By replying through poetry to the attacks of hostile poets. ↩
Word by Word ▾ إِلَّا Except illā
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
ءَامَنُوا۟ believe āmanū
وَعَمِلُوا۟ and do waʿamilū
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti
وَذَكَرُوا۟ and remember wadhakarū
ٱللَّهَ Allah l-laha
كَثِيرًۭا much kathīran
وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ and defend themselves wa-intaṣarū
مِنۢ after min
بَعْدِ after baʿdi
مَا after mā
ظُلِمُوا۟ they were wronged ẓulimū
وَسَيَعْلَمُ And will come to know wasayaʿlamu
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
ظَلَمُوٓا۟ have wronged ẓalamū
أَىَّ (to) what ayya
مُنقَلَبٍۢ return munqalabin
يَنقَلِبُونَ they will return yanqalibūna
