Surah Ash-Shu'ara Verses 201–227

201

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ

They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.

يُؤْمِنُونَthey will believeyu'minūna
بِهِۦin itbihi
حَتَّىٰuntilḥattā
يَرَوُا۟they seeyarawū
ٱلْعَذَابَthe punishmentl-ʿadhāba
ٱلْأَلِيمَ[the] painfull-alīma
202

فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.

Word by Word
فَيَأْتِيَهُمAnd it will come to themfayatiyahum
بَغْتَةًۭsuddenlybaghtatan
وَهُمْwhile theywahum
لَا(do) not
يَشْعُرُونَperceiveyashʿurūna
203

فَيَقُولُوا۟ هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنظَرُونَ

And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

فَيَقُولُوا۟Then they will sayfayaqūlū
هَلْArehal
نَحْنُwenaḥnu
مُنظَرُونَ(to be) reprievedmunẓarūna
204

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

So for Our punishment are they impatient?

Word by Word
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَاSo is it for Our punishmentafabiʿadhābinā
يَسْتَعْجِلُونَthey wish to hastenyastaʿjilūna
205

أَفَرَءَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَٰهُمْ سِنِينَ

Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

أَفَرَءَيْتَThen have you seenafara-ayta
إِنifin
مَّتَّعْنَٰهُمْWe let them enjoymattaʿnāhum
سِنِينَ(for) yearssinīna
206

ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ

And then there came to them that which they were promised?

كَانُوا۟they werekānū
يُوعَدُونَpromisedyūʿadūna
207

مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُمَتَّعُونَ

They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.

مَّاwhat

208

وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ

And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners

أَهْلَكْنَاWe destroyedahlaknā

قَرْيَةٍtownqaryatin
إِلَّاbutillā
لَهَاit hadlahā
مُنذِرُونَwarnersmundhirūna
209

ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.

ذِكْرَىٰ(To) reminddhik'rā
وَمَاand notwamā
كُنَّاWe arekunnā
ظَٰلِمِينَunjustẓālimīna
210

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ

And the devils have not brought it [i.e., the revelation] down.1062

  1. [1062] As was asserted by the disbelievers. Rather, it was brought by Gabriel, the Trustworthy Spirit.

تَنَزَّلَتْhave brought it downtanazzalat
بِهِhave brought it downbihi
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُthe devilsl-shayāṭīnu
211

وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لَهُمْ وَمَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.

وَمَاAnd notwamā
يَنۢبَغِى(it) suitsyanbaghī
لَهُمْ[for] themlahum
وَمَاand notwamā
يَسْتَطِيعُونَthey are ableyastaṭīʿūna
212

إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ ٱلسَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ

Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.1063

  1. [1063] As mentioned in 72:9.

لَمَعْزُولُونَ(are) surely banishedlamaʿzūlūna
213

فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُعَذَّبِينَ

So do not invoke1064 with Allāh another deity and [thus] be among the punished.

  1. [1064] Or "worship."

فَلَاSo (do) notfalā
تَدْعُinvoketadʿu
مَعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
إِلَٰهًاgodilāhan
ءَاخَرَanotherākhara
فَتَكُونَlest you befatakūna

ٱلْمُعَذَّبِينَthose punishedl-muʿadhabīna
214

وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ

And warn, [O Muḥammad], your closest kindred.

وَأَنذِرْAnd warnwa-andhir
عَشِيرَتَكَyour kindredʿashīrataka
ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ[the] closestl-aqrabīna
215

وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to those who follow you of the believers.

وَٱخْفِضْAnd lowerwa-ikh'fiḍ
جَنَاحَكَyour wingjanāḥaka
لِمَنِto (those) wholimani
ٱتَّبَعَكَfollow youittabaʿaka
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersl-mu'minīna
216

فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌۭ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."

إِنِّىIndeed, I aminnī
بَرِىٓءٌۭinnocentbarīon
مِّمَّاof whatmimmā

217

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

وَتَوَكَّلْAnd put (your) trustwatawakkal
عَلَىinʿalā
ٱلْعَزِيزِthe All-Mightyl-ʿazīzi
ٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmi
218

ٱلَّذِى يَرَىٰكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ

Who sees you when you arise1065

  1. [1065] From your bed at night for prayer while you are alone.

ٱلَّذِىThe One Whoalladhī
يَرَىٰكَsees youyarāka
حِينَwhenḥīna
تَقُومُyou stand uptaqūmu
219

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِى ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

And your movement among those who prostrate.1066

  1. [1066] i.e., among those who pray with you in congregation.

وَتَقَلُّبَكَAnd your movementswataqallubaka
فِىamong
ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَthose who prostratel-sājidīna
220

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

إِنَّهُۥIndeed, Heinnahu
هُوَ[He]huwa
ٱلسَّمِيعُ(is) the All-Hearerl-samīʿu
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knowerl-ʿalīmu
221

هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُ

Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

أُنَبِّئُكُمْI inform youunabbi-ukum
عَلَىٰuponʿalā
مَنwhomman
تَنَزَّلُdescendtanazzalu
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينُthe devilsl-shayāṭīnu
222

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍۢ

They descend upon every sinful liar.

عَلَىٰuponʿalā
كُلِّeverykulli
أَفَّاكٍliaraffākin
أَثِيمٍۢsinfulathīmin
223

يُلْقُونَ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَٰذِبُونَ

They pass on what is heard,1067 and most of them are liars.

  1. [1067] This was before they were prevented, as described in 72:8-9.

ٱلسَّمْعَ(what is) heardl-samʿa
وَأَكْثَرُهُمْand most of themwa-aktharuhum
كَٰذِبُونَ(are) liarskādhibūna
224

وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلْغَاوُۥنَ

And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them.

وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُAnd the poetswal-shuʿarāu
يَتَّبِعُهُمُfollow themyattabiʿuhumu
ٱلْغَاوُۥنَthe deviatorsl-ghāwūna
225

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِى كُلِّ وَادٍۢ يَهِيمُونَ

Do you not see that in every valley they roam1068

  1. [1068] Speaking lies indiscriminately and praising and disparaging others according to whim.

226

وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ

And that they say what they do not do? -

وَأَنَّهُمْAnd that theywa-annahum
يَقُولُونَsayyaqūlūna
مَاwhat
لَاnot
يَفْعَلُونَthey doyafʿalūna
227

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ ۗ وَسَيَعْلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَىَّ مُنقَلَبٍۢ يَنقَلِبُونَ

Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allāh often and defend [the Muslims]1069 after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.

  1. [1069] By replying through poetry to the attacks of hostile poets.

ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِrighteous deedsl-ṣāliḥāti
وَذَكَرُوا۟and rememberwadhakarū
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
كَثِيرًۭاmuchkathīran
وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟and defend themselveswa-intaṣarū
مِنۢaftermin
بَعْدِafterbaʿdi
مَاafter
ظُلِمُوا۟they were wrongedẓulimū
وَسَيَعْلَمُAnd will come to knowwasayaʿlamu
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
ظَلَمُوٓا۟have wrongedẓalamū
أَىَّ(to) whatayya
مُنقَلَبٍۢreturnmunqalabin
يَنقَلِبُونَthey will returnyanqalibūna
