151
وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ
And do not obey the order of the transgressors,
Word by Word ▾
وَلَاAnd (do) notwalā
تُطِيعُوٓا۟obeytuṭīʿū
أَمْرَ(the) commandamra
ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ(of) the transgressorsl-mus'rifīna
152
ٱلَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ
Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."

ٱلَّذِينَThose whoalladhīna
يُفْسِدُونَspread corruptionyuf'sidūna
فِىinfī
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
يُصْلِحُونَreformyuṣ'liḥūna
153
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālū
إِنَّمَآOnlyinnamā
أَنتَyouanta
مِنَ(are) ofmina
ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَthose bewitchedl-musaḥarīna
154
مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌۭ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."

مَآNotmā
أَنتَyouanta
إِلَّا(are) exceptillā
بَشَرٌۭa manbasharun
مِّثْلُنَاlike usmith'lunā
فَأْتِso bringfati
بِـَٔايَةٍa signbiāyatin
إِنifin
كُنتَyoukunta
مِنَ(are) ofmina
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَthe truthfull-ṣādiqīna
155
قَالَ هَٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةٌۭ لَّهَا شِرْبٌۭ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ
He said, "This is a she-camel.1056 For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.- [1056] Miraculously sent to them as a sign by Allāh. ↩

قَالَHe saidqāla
هَٰذِهِۦThishādhihi
نَاقَةٌۭ(is) a she-camelnāqatun
لَّهَاFor herlahā
شِرْبٌۭ(is a share of) drinkshir'bun
وَلَكُمْand for youwalakum
شِرْبُ(is a share of) drinkshir'bu
يَوْمٍۢ(on) a dayyawmin
مَّعْلُومٍۢknownmaʿlūmin
156
وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍۢ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍۢ
And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."

وَلَاAnd (do) notwalā
تَمَسُّوهَاtouch hertamassūhā
بِسُوٓءٍۢwith harmbisūin
فَيَأْخُذَكُمْlest seize youfayakhudhakum
عَذَابُ(the) punishmentʿadhābu
يَوْمٍ(of) a Dayyawmin
عَظِيمٍۢGreatʿaẓīmin
157
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ نَٰدِمِينَ
But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.

فَعَقَرُوهَاBut they hamstrung herfaʿaqarūhā
فَأَصْبَحُوا۟then they becamefa-aṣbaḥū
نَٰدِمِينَregretfulnādimīna
158
فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

فَأَخَذَهُمُSo seized themfa-akhadhahumu
ٱلْعَذَابُthe punishmentl-ʿadhābu
إِنَّIndeedinna
فِىinfī
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
لَءَايَةًۭsurely is a signlaāyatan
وَمَاbut notwamā
كَانَarekāna
أَكْثَرُهُمmost of themaktharuhum
مُّؤْمِنِينَbelieversmu'minīna
159
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-inna
رَبَّكَyour Lordrabbaka
لَهُوَsurely Helahuwa
ٱلْعَزِيزُ(is) the All-Mightyl-ʿazīzu
ٱلرَّحِيمُthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmu
160
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
The people of Lot denied the messengers

كَذَّبَتْDeniedkadhabat
قَوْمُ(the) peopleqawmu
لُوطٍ(of) Lutlūṭin
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengersl-mur'salīna
161
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

إِذْWhenidh
قَالَsaidqāla
لَهُمْto themlahum
أَخُوهُمْtheir brotherakhūhum
لُوطٌLutlūṭun
أَلَاWill notalā
تَتَّقُونَyou fear (Allah)tattaqūna
162
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

إِنِّىIndeed, I aminnī
لَكُمْto youlakum
رَسُولٌa Messengerrasūlun
أَمِينٌۭtrustworthyamīnun
163
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So fear Allāh and obey me.

فَٱتَّقُوا۟So fearfa-ittaqū
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
وَأَطِيعُونِand obey mewa-aṭīʿūni
164
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

وَمَآAnd notwamā
أَسْـَٔلُكُمْI ask youasalukum
عَلَيْهِfor itʿalayhi
مِنْanymin
أَجْرٍpaymentajrin
إِنْNotin
أَجْرِىَ(is) my paymentajriya
إِلَّاexceptillā
عَلَىٰfromʿalā
رَبِّ(the) Lordrabbi
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
165
أَتَأْتُونَ ٱلذُّكْرَانَ مِنَ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
Do you approach males among the worlds1057- [1057] i.e., Are there, out of all Allāh's creatures, any besides you who commit this unnatural act? ↩

أَتَأْتُونَDo you approachatatūna
ٱلذُّكْرَانَthe malesl-dhuk'rāna
مِنَamongmina
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَthe worldsl-ʿālamīna
166
وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُم ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَادُونَ
And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."

وَتَذَرُونَAnd you leavewatadharūna
مَاwhatmā
خَلَقَcreatedkhalaqa
لَكُمْfor youlakum
رَبُّكُمyour Lordrabbukum
مِّنْofmin
أَزْوَٰجِكُمyour matesazwājikum
بَلْNaybal
أَنتُمْyouantum
قَوْمٌ(are) a peopleqawmun
عَادُونَtransgressingʿādūna
167
قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمُخْرَجِينَ
They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."

قَالُوا۟They saidqālū
لَئِنIfla-in
لَّمْnotlam
تَنتَهِyou desisttantahi
يَٰلُوطُO Lutyālūṭu
لَتَكُونَنَّSurely, you will belatakūnanna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُخْرَجِينَthe ones driven outl-mukh'rajīna
168
قَالَ إِنِّى لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلْقَالِينَ
He said, "Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest [it].

قَالَHe saidqāla
إِنِّىIndeed, I aminnī
لِعَمَلِكُم(of) your deedliʿamalikum
مِّنَofmina
ٱلْقَالِينَthose who detestl-qālīna
169
رَبِّ نَجِّنِى وَأَهْلِى مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ
My Lord, save me and my family from [the consequence of] what they do."

رَبِّMy Lordrabbi
نَجِّنِىSave menajjinī
وَأَهْلِىand my familywa-ahlī
مِمَّاfrom whatmimmā
يَعْمَلُونَthey doyaʿmalūna
170
فَنَجَّيْنَٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ
So We saved him and his family, all,
Word by Word ▾
فَنَجَّيْنَٰهُSo We saved himfanajjaynāhu
وَأَهْلَهُۥٓand his familywa-ahlahu
أَجْمَعِينَallajmaʿīna
171
إِلَّا عَجُوزًۭا فِى ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ
Except an old woman1058 among those who remained behind.- [1058] Lot's wife, who had collaborated with the evildoers. ↩

إِلَّاExceptillā
عَجُوزًۭاan old womanʿajūzan
فِى(was) amongfī
ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَthose who remained behindl-ghābirīna
172
ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا ٱلْءَاخَرِينَ
Then We destroyed the others.
Word by Word ▾
ثُمَّThenthumma
دَمَّرْنَاWe destroyeddammarnā
ٱلْءَاخَرِينَthe othersl-ākharīna
173
وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّطَرًۭا ۖ فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ
And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned.

وَأَمْطَرْنَاAnd We rainedwa-amṭarnā
عَلَيْهِمupon themʿalayhim
مَّطَرًۭاa rainmaṭaran
فَسَآءَand evil wasfasāa
مَطَرُ(was) the rainmaṭaru
ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ(on) those who were warnedl-mundharīna
174
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

كَذَّبَ أَصْحَٰبُ لْـَٔيْكَةِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
The companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] denied the messengers

كَذَّبَDeniedkadhaba
أَصْحَٰبُ(the) companionsaṣḥābu
لْـَٔيْكَةِ(of the) Woodal'aykati
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengersl-mur'salīna
177
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ شُعَيْبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When Shuʿayb said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

إِذْWhenidh
قَالَsaidqāla
لَهُمْto themlahum
شُعَيْبٌShuaibshuʿaybun
أَلَاWill notalā
تَتَّقُونَyou fear (Allah)tattaqūna
178
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

۞ أَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْكَيْلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُخْسِرِينَ
Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.

أَوْفُوا۟Give fullawfū
ٱلْكَيْلَmeasurel-kayla
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
تَكُونُوا۟betakūnū
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُخْسِرِينَthose who cause lossl-mukh'sirīna
182
وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلْقِسْطَاسِ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمِ
And weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance.

وَزِنُوا۟And weighwazinū
بِٱلْقِسْطَاسِwith a balancebil-qis'ṭāsi
ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمِ[the] evenl-mus'taqīmi
183
وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.

وَلَاAnd (do) notwalā
تَبْخَسُوا۟deprivetabkhasū
ٱلنَّاسَpeoplel-nāsa
أَشْيَآءَهُمْ(of) their thingsashyāahum
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
تَعْثَوْا۟commit eviltaʿthaw
فِىinfī
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
مُفْسِدِينَspreading corruptionmuf'sidīna
184
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلْجِبِلَّةَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
And fear He who created you and the former creation."1059- [1059] i.e., previous generations. ↩

وَٱتَّقُوا۟And fearwa-ittaqū
ٱلَّذِىthe One Whoalladhī
خَلَقَكُمْcreated youkhalaqakum
وَٱلْجِبِلَّةَand the generationswal-jibilata
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَthe formerl-awalīna
185
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālū
إِنَّمَآOnlyinnamā
أَنتَyouanta
مِنَ(are) ofmina
ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَthose bewitchedl-musaḥarīna

وَمَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌۭ مِّثْلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ
You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.

وَمَآAnd notwamā
أَنتَyouanta
إِلَّا(are) exceptillā
بَشَرٌۭa manbasharun
مِّثْلُنَاlike usmith'lunā
وَإِنand indeedwa-in
نَّظُنُّكَwe think younaẓunnuka
لَمِنَsurely (are) oflamina
ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَthe liarsl-kādhibīna
187
فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ
So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."

فَأَسْقِطْThen cause to fallfa-asqiṭ
عَلَيْنَاupon usʿalaynā
كِسَفًۭاfragmentskisafan
مِّنَofmina
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe skyl-samāi
إِنifin
كُنتَyou arekunta
مِنَofmina
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَthe truthfull-ṣādiqīna
188
قَالَ رَبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."

قَالَHe saidqāla
رَبِّىٓMy Lordrabbī
أَعْلَمُknows bestaʿlamu
بِمَاof whatbimā
تَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūna
189
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.

فَكَذَّبُوهُBut they denied himfakadhabūhu
فَأَخَذَهُمْso seized themfa-akhadhahum
عَذَابُ(the) punishmentʿadhābu
يَوْمِ(of the) dayyawmi
ٱلظُّلَّةِ(of) the shadowl-ẓulati
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, itinnahu
كَانَwaskāna
عَذَابَ(the) punishmentʿadhāba
يَوْمٍ(of) a Dayyawmin
عَظِيمٍGreatʿaẓīmin
190
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itwa-innahu
لَتَنزِيلُsurely, is a Revelationlatanzīlu
رَبِّ(of the) Lordrabbi
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
193
نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلْأَمِينُ
The Trustworthy Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down
Word by Word ▾
نَزَلَHas brought it downnazala
بِهِHas brought it downbihi
ٱلرُّوحُthe Spiritl-rūḥu
ٱلْأَمِينُ[the] Trustworthyl-amīnu
194
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنذِرِينَ
Upon your heart, [O Muḥammad] - that you may be of the warners
Word by Word ▾
عَلَىٰUponʿalā
قَلْبِكَyour heartqalbika
لِتَكُونَthat you may belitakūna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُنذِرِينَthe warnersl-mundhirīna
195
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِىٍّۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
In a clear Arabic language.

بِلِسَانٍIn languagebilisānin
عَرَبِىٍّۢArabicʿarabiyyin
مُّبِينٍۢclearmubīnin
196
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِى زُبُرِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itwa-innahu
لَفِىsurely, (is) inlafī
زُبُرِ(the) Scriptureszuburi
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)l-awalīna
197
أَوَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُمْ ءَايَةً أَن يَعْلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَٰٓؤُا۟ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?

أَوَلَمْIs it notawalam
يَكُنIs it notyakun
لَّهُمْto themlahum
ءَايَةًa signāyatan
أَنthatan
يَعْلَمَهُۥknow ityaʿlamahu
عُلَمَٰٓؤُا۟(the) scholarsʿulamāu
بَنِىٓ(of the) Childrenbanī
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(of) Israelis'rāīla
198
وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ ٱلْأَعْجَمِينَ
And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners1060- [1060] i.e., the non-Arabs or those who are not fluent in the Arabic language. ↩

وَلَوْAnd ifwalaw
نَزَّلْنَٰهُWe (had) revealed itnazzalnāhu
عَلَىٰtoʿalā
بَعْضِanybaʿḍi
ٱلْأَعْجَمِينَ(of) the non-Arabsl-aʿjamīna
199
فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَيْهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنِينَ
And he had recited it to them [perfectly],1061 they would [still] not have been believers in it.- [1061] As a miracle from Allāh. ↩

فَقَرَأَهُۥAnd he (had) recited itfaqara-ahu
عَلَيْهِمto themʿalayhim
مَّاnotmā
كَانُوا۟they wouldkānū
بِهِۦin itbihi
مُؤْمِنِينَ(be) believersmu'minīna

كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَٰهُ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
Thus have We inserted it [i.e., disbelief] into the hearts of the criminals.
