Surah Ash-Shu'ara Verses 51–100

51

إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَٰيَٰنَآ أَن كُنَّآ أَوَّلَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."

كُنَّآwe arekunnā
أَوَّلَ(the) firstawwala
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ(of) the believersl-mu'minīna
52

۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِىٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."

إِلَىٰtoilā
مُوسَىٰٓMusamūsā
أَنْ[that]an
أَسْرِTravel by nightasri
بِعِبَادِىٓwith My slavesbiʿibādī
إِنَّكُمindeed, youinnakum
مُّتَّبَعُونَ(will be) followedmuttabaʿūna
53

فَأَرْسَلَ فِرْعَوْنُ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَٰشِرِينَ

Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers1050

  1. [1050] Recruiters of an army to prevent the emigration of the Children of Israel.

فِرْعَوْنُFiraunfir'ʿawnu
فِىin
ٱلْمَدَآئِنِthe citiesl-madāini
حَٰشِرِينَgatherersḥāshirīna
54

إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَشِرْذِمَةٌۭ قَلِيلُونَ

[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,

Word by Word
إِنَّIndeedinna
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِthesehāulāi
لَشِرْذِمَةٌۭ(are) certainly a bandlashir'dhimatun
قَلِيلُونَsmallqalīlūna
55

وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَآئِظُونَ

And indeed, they are enraging us,

Word by Word
وَإِنَّهُمْAnd indeed, theywa-innahum
لَنَا[to] uslanā
لَغَآئِظُونَ(are) surely enraginglaghāiẓūna
56

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَٰذِرُونَ

And indeed, we are a cautious society..."

وَإِنَّاAnd indeed, wewa-innā
لَجَمِيعٌ(are) surely a multitudelajamīʿun
حَٰذِرُونَforewarnedḥādhirūna
57

فَأَخْرَجْنَٰهُم مِّن جَنَّٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ

So We removed them from gardens and springs

فَأَخْرَجْنَٰهُمSo We expelled themfa-akhrajnāhum
مِّنfrommin
جَنَّٰتٍۢgardensjannātin
وَعُيُونٍۢand springswaʿuyūnin
58

وَكُنُوزٍۢ وَمَقَامٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ

And treasures and honorable station1051 -

  1. [1051] Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) caused them to abandon their wealth and property in pursuit of the Israelites.

وَكُنُوزٍۢAnd treasureswakunūzin
وَمَقَامٍۢand a placewamaqāmin
كَرِيمٍۢhonorablekarīmin
59

كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَٰهَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.

كَذَٰلِكَThuskadhālika
وَأَوْرَثْنَٰهَاAnd We caused to inherit themwa-awrathnāhā
بَنِىٓ(the) Children of Israelbanī
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(the) Children of Israelis'rāīla
60

فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ

So they pursued them at sunrise.

فَأَتْبَعُوهُمSo they followed themfa-atbaʿūhum
مُّشْرِقِينَ(at) sunrisemush'riqīna
61

فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا ٱلْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"

فَلَمَّاThen whenfalammā
تَرَٰٓءَاsaw each othertarāā
ٱلْجَمْعَانِthe two hostsl-jamʿāni
قَالَsaidqāla
أَصْحَٰبُ(the) companionsaṣḥābu
مُوسَىٰٓ(of) Musamūsā
إِنَّاIndeed, weinnā
لَمُدْرَكُونَ(are) surely to be overtakenlamud'rakūna
62

قَالَ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ

[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

إِنَّindeedinna
مَعِىَwith memaʿiya
رَبِّى(is) my Lordrabbī
سَيَهْدِينِHe will guide mesayahdīni
63

فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْبَحْرَ ۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍۢ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.

فَأَوْحَيْنَآThen We inspiredfa-awḥaynā
إِلَىٰtoilā
مُوسَىٰٓMusamūsā
أَنِ[that]ani
ٱضْرِبStrikeiḍ'rib
بِّعَصَاكَwith your staffbiʿaṣāka
ٱلْبَحْرَthe seal-baḥra
فَٱنفَلَقَSo it partedfa-infalaqa
فَكَانَand becamefakāna
كُلُّeachkullu
فِرْقٍۢpartfir'qin
كَٱلطَّوْدِlike the mountainkal-ṭawdi
ٱلْعَظِيمِ[the] greatl-ʿaẓīmi
64

وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ ٱلْءَاخَرِينَ

And We advanced thereto the others [i.e., the pursuers].

وَأَزْلَفْنَاAnd We brought nearwa-azlafnā
ثَمَّtherethamma
ٱلْءَاخَرِينَthe othersl-ākharīna
65

وَأَنجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ

And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.

وَأَنجَيْنَاAnd We savedwa-anjaynā
مُوسَىٰMusamūsā
وَمَنand whowaman
مَّعَهُۥٓ(were) with himmaʿahu
أَجْمَعِينَallajmaʿīna
66

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْءَاخَرِينَ

Then We drowned the others.

ثُمَّThenthumma
أَغْرَقْنَاWe drownedaghraqnā
ٱلْءَاخَرِينَthe othersl-ākharīna
67

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

لَءَايَةًۭsurely (is) a Signlaāyatan
وَمَاbut notwamā
كَانَarekāna
أَكْثَرُهُمmost of themaktharuhum
مُّؤْمِنِينَbelieversmu'minīna
68

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

رَبَّكَyour Lordrabbaka
لَهُوَsurely Helahuwa
ٱلْعَزِيزُ(is) the All-Mightyl-ʿazīzu
ٱلرَّحِيمُthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmu
69

وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

And recite to them the news of Abraham,

وَٱتْلُAnd recitewa-ut'lu
عَلَيْهِمْto themʿalayhim
نَبَأَ(the) newsnaba-a
إِبْرَٰهِيمَ(of) Ibrahimib'rāhīma
70

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ

When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"

لِأَبِيهِto his fatherli-abīhi
وَقَوْمِهِۦand his peoplewaqawmihi
مَاWhat
تَعْبُدُونَ(do) you worshiptaʿbudūna
71

قَالُوا۟ نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًۭا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَٰكِفِينَ

They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."

نَعْبُدُWe worshipnaʿbudu
أَصْنَامًۭاidolsaṣnāman
فَنَظَلُّso we will remainfanaẓallu
لَهَاto themlahā
عَٰكِفِينَdevotedʿākifīna
72

قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ

He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?

هَلْDohal
يَسْمَعُونَكُمْthey hear youyasmaʿūnakum
إِذْwhenidh
تَدْعُونَyou calltadʿūna
73

أَوْ يَنفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ

Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"

أَوْOraw
يَنفَعُونَكُمْ(do) they benefit youyanfaʿūnakum
أَوْoraw
يَضُرُّونَthey harm (you)yaḍurrūna
74

قَالُوا۟ بَلْ وَجَدْنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

وَجَدْنَآbut we foundwajadnā
ءَابَآءَنَاour forefathersābāanā
كَذَٰلِكَlike thatkadhālika
يَفْعَلُونَdoingyafʿalūna
75

قَالَ أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ

He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

أَفَرَءَيْتُمDo you seeafara-aytum
مَّاwhat
كُنتُمْyou have beenkuntum
تَعْبُدُونَworshippingtaʿbudūna
76

أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُمُ ٱلْأَقْدَمُونَ

You and your ancient forefathers?

أَنتُمْYouantum
وَءَابَآؤُكُمُand your forefatherswaābāukumu
ٱلْأَقْدَمُونَand your forefathersl-aqdamūna
77

فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّۭ لِّىٓ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,1052

  1. [1052] The people worshipped idols in addition to Allāh.

عَدُوٌّۭ(are) enemiesʿaduwwun
لِّىٓto me
إِلَّاexceptillā
رَبَّ(the) Lordrabba
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
78

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَنِى فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ

Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.

ٱلَّذِىThe One Whoalladhī
خَلَقَنِىcreated mekhalaqanī
فَهُوَand Hefahuwa
يَهْدِينِguides meyahdīni
79

وَٱلَّذِى هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِى وَيَسْقِينِ

And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.

وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Whowa-alladhī
هُوَ[He]huwa
يُطْعِمُنِىgives me foodyuṭ'ʿimunī
وَيَسْقِينِand gives me drinkwayasqīni
80

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ

And when I am ill, it is He who cures me

وَإِذَاAnd whenwa-idhā
مَرِضْتُI am illmariḍ'tu
فَهُوَthen Hefahuwa
يَشْفِينِcures meyashfīni
81

وَٱلَّذِى يُمِيتُنِى ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ

And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life

وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Whowa-alladhī
يُمِيتُنِىwill cause me to dieyumītunī
ثُمَّthenthumma
يُحْيِينِhe will give me lifeyuḥ'yīni
82

وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لِى خَطِيٓـَٔتِى يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense."

وَٱلَّذِىٓAnd the One Whowa-alladhī
أَطْمَعُI hopeaṭmaʿu
أَنthatan
يَغْفِرَHe will forgiveyaghfira
لِىfor me
خَطِيٓـَٔتِىmy faultskhaṭīatī
يَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawma
ٱلدِّينِ(of) the Judgmentl-dīni
83

رَبِّ هَبْ لِى حُكْمًۭا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.

لِى[for] me
حُكْمًۭاwisdomḥuk'man
وَأَلْحِقْنِىand join mewa-alḥiq'nī
بِٱلصَّٰلِحِينَwith the righteousbil-ṣāliḥīna
84

وَٱجْعَل لِّى لِسَانَ صِدْقٍۢ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

And grant me a mention [i.e., reputation] of honor among later generations.

وَٱجْعَلAnd grantwa-ij'ʿal
لِّى[for] me
لِسَانَa mentionlisāna
صِدْقٍۢ(of) honorṣid'qin
فِىamong
ٱلْءَاخِرِينَthe later (generations)l-ākhirīna
85

وَٱجْعَلْنِى مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.

وَٱجْعَلْنِىAnd make mewa-ij'ʿalnī
مِنofmin
وَرَثَةِ(the) inheritorswarathati
جَنَّةِ(of) Garden (s)jannati
ٱلنَّعِيمِ(of) Delightl-naʿīmi
86

وَٱغْفِرْ لِأَبِىٓ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

وَٱغْفِرْAnd forgivewa-igh'fir
لِأَبِىٓmy fatherli-abī
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahu
كَانَiskāna
مِنَofmina
ٱلضَّآلِّينَthose astrayl-ḍālīna
87

وَلَا تُخْزِنِى يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -

وَلَاAnd (do) notwalā
تُخْزِنِىdisgrace metukh'zinī
يَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawma
يُبْعَثُونَthey are resurrectedyub'ʿathūna
88

يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌۭ وَلَا بَنُونَ

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

يَوْمَ(The) Dayyawma
لَاnot
يَنفَعُwill benefityanfaʿu
مَالٌۭwealthmālun
وَلَاand notwalā
بَنُونَsonsbanūna
89

إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍۢ سَلِيمٍۢ

But only one who comes to Allāh with a sound heart."

ٱللَّهَ(to) Allahl-laha

90

وَأُزْلِفَتِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.

وَأُزْلِفَتِAnd (will be) brought nearwa-uz'lifati
ٱلْجَنَّةُthe Paradisel-janatu
لِلْمُتَّقِينَfor the righteouslil'muttaqīna
91

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ

And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,

وَبُرِّزَتِAnd (will be) made manifestwaburrizati
ٱلْجَحِيمُthe Hellfirel-jaḥīmu
لِلْغَاوِينَto the deviatorslil'ghāwīna
92

وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ

And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship

وَقِيلَAnd it will be saidwaqīla
لَهُمْto themlahum
أَيْنَWhereayna
مَا(is) that
كُنتُمْyou usedkuntum
تَعْبُدُونَ(to) worshiptaʿbudūna
93

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلْ يَنصُرُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَنتَصِرُونَ

Other than Allāh? Can they help you or help themselves?"

ٱللَّهِBesides Allahl-lahi
هَلْCanhal
يَنصُرُونَكُمْthey help youyanṣurūnakum
أَوْoraw
يَنتَصِرُونَhelp themselvesyantaṣirūna
94

فَكُبْكِبُوا۟ فِيهَا هُمْ وَٱلْغَاوُۥنَ

So they will be overturned into it [i.e., Hellfire], they and the deviators

فَكُبْكِبُوا۟Then they will be overturnedfakub'kibū
فِيهَاinto itfīhā
هُمْtheyhum
وَٱلْغَاوُۥنَand the deviatorswal-ghāwūna
95

وَجُنُودُ إِبْلِيسَ أَجْمَعُونَ

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

إِبْلِيسَ(of) Iblisib'līsa
أَجْمَعُونَall togetherajmaʿūna
96

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ

They will say while they dispute therein,

وَهُمْwhile theywahum
فِيهَاin itfīhā
يَخْتَصِمُونَ(are) disputingyakhtaṣimūna
97

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍ

"By Allāh, we were indeed in manifest error

تَٱللَّهِBy Allahtal-lahi
إِنindeedin
كُنَّاwe werekunnā
لَفِىsurely inlafī
ضَلَٰلٍۢerrorḍalālin
مُّبِينٍclearmubīnin
98

إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.

بِرَبِّwith (the) Lordbirabbi
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
99

وَمَآ أَضَلَّنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ

And no one misguided us except the criminals.

ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَthe criminalsl-muj'rimūna
100

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَٰفِعِينَ

So now we have no intercessors

شَٰفِعِينَintercessorsshāfiʿīna
