101
وَلَا صَدِيقٍ حَمِيمٍۢ
And not a devoted friend.
Word by Word ▾
وَلَاAnd notwalā
صَدِيقٍa friendṣadīqin
حَمِيمٍۢcloseḥamīmin
102
فَلَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةًۭ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers..."1053- [1053] The conclusion of this verse is estimated as "...we would do this or that." ↩

فَلَوْThen iffalaw
أَنَّthatanna
لَنَاwe hadlanā
كَرَّةًۭa returnkarratan
فَنَكُونَthen we could befanakūna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersl-mu'minīna
103
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

فِىinfī
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
لَءَايَةًۭsurely is a Signlaāyatan
وَمَاbut notwamā
كَانَarekāna
أَكْثَرُهُمmost of themaktharuhum
مُّؤْمِنِينَbelieversmu'minīna
104
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

رَبَّكَyour Lordrabbaka
لَهُوَsurely Helahuwa
ٱلْعَزِيزُ(is) the All-Mightyl-ʿazīzu
ٱلرَّحِيمُthe Most Mercifull-raḥīmu
105
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
The people of Noah denied the messengers1054- [1054] See footnote to 25:37. ↩

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengersl-mur'salīna

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

قَالَsaidqāla
لَهُمْto themlahum
أَخُوهُمْtheir brotherakhūhum
نُوحٌNuhnūḥun
أَلَاWill notalā
تَتَّقُونَyou fear (Allah)tattaqūna
107
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

لَكُمْto youlakum
رَسُولٌa Messengerrasūlun
أَمِينٌۭtrustworthyamīnun
108
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So fear Allāh and obey me.

فَٱتَّقُوا۟So fearfa-ittaqū
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
وَأَطِيعُونِand obey mewa-aṭīʿūni
109
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْI ask (of) youasalukum
عَلَيْهِfor itʿalayhi
مِنْanymin
أَجْرٍpaymentajrin
إِنْNotin
أَجْرِىَ(is) my paymentajriya

عَلَىٰfromʿalā
رَبِّ(the) Lordrabbi
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
110
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So fear Allāh and obey me."

فَٱتَّقُوا۟So fearfa-ittaqū
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
وَأَطِيعُونِand obey mewa-aṭīʿūni
111
۞ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلْأَرْذَلُونَ
They said, "Should we believe you while you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"

قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālū
أَنُؤْمِنُShould we believeanu'minu
لَكَin youlaka
وَٱتَّبَعَكَwhile followed youwa-ittabaʿaka
ٱلْأَرْذَلُونَthe lowestl-ardhalūna
112
قَالَ وَمَا عِلْمِى بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
He said, "And what is my knowledge of what they used to do?

قَالَHe saidqāla
وَمَاAnd whatwamā
عِلْمِى(do) I knowʿil'mī
بِمَاof whatbimā
كَانُوا۟they usedkānū
يَعْمَلُونَ(to) doyaʿmalūna
113
إِنْ حِسَابُهُمْ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّى ۖ لَوْ تَشْعُرُونَ
Their account is only upon my Lord, if you [could] perceive.

إِنْVerilyin
حِسَابُهُمْtheir accountḥisābuhum
إِلَّا(is) butillā
عَلَىٰuponʿalā
رَبِّىmy Lordrabbī
لَوْiflaw
تَشْعُرُونَyou perceivetashʿurūna
114
وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
And I am not one to drive away the believers.

وَمَآAnd notwamā
أَنَا۠I amanā
بِطَارِدِthe one to drive awaybiṭāridi
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersl-mu'minīna
115
إِنْ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ
I am only a clear warner."

مُّبِينٌۭclearmubīnun
116
قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمَرْجُومِينَ
They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."

قَالُوا۟They saidqālū
لَئِنIfla-in
لَّمْnotlam
تَنتَهِyou desisttantahi
يَٰنُوحُO Nuhyānūḥu
لَتَكُونَنَّSurely you will belatakūnanna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمَرْجُومِينَthose who are stonedl-marjūmīna
117
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِى كَذَّبُونِ
He said, "My Lord, indeed my people have denied me.

قَالَHe saidqāla
رَبِّMy Lordrabbi
إِنَّIndeedinna
قَوْمِىmy peopleqawmī
كَذَّبُونِhave denied mekadhabūni
118
فَٱفْتَحْ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَتْحًۭا وَنَجِّنِى وَمَن مَّعِىَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Then judge between me and them with decisive judgement and save me and those with me of the believers."

فَٱفْتَحْSo judgefa-if'taḥ
بَيْنِىbetween mebaynī
وَبَيْنَهُمْand between themwabaynahum
فَتْحًۭا(with decisive) judgmentfatḥan
وَنَجِّنِىand save mewanajjinī
وَمَنand whowaman
مَّعِىَ(are) with memaʿiya
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersl-mu'minīna
119
فَأَنجَيْنَٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ
So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

فَأَنجَيْنَٰهُSo We saved himfa-anjaynāhu
وَمَنand whowaman
مَّعَهُۥ(were) with himmaʿahu
فِىinfī
ٱلْفُلْكِthe shipl-ful'ki
ٱلْمَشْحُونِladenl-mashḥūni
120
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا بَعْدُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ
Then We drowned thereafter the remaining ones.

ثُمَّThenthumma
أَغْرَقْنَاWe drownedaghraqnā
بَعْدُthereafterbaʿdu
ٱلْبَاقِينَthe remaining onesl-bāqīna
121
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

أَتَبْنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ ءَايَةًۭ تَعْبَثُونَ
Do you construct on every elevation a sign,1055 amusing yourselves,- [1055] i.e., a symbol or indication of their wealth and power. They used to build lofty structures along the road to be seen by all who passed by. ↩

أَتَبْنُونَDo you constructatabnūna
بِكُلِّon everybikulli
رِيعٍelevationrīʿin
ءَايَةًۭa signāyatan
تَعْبَثُونَamusing yourselvestaʿbathūna
129
وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَخْلُدُونَ
And take for yourselves constructions [i.e., palaces and fortresses] that you might abide eternally?
Word by Word ▾
وَتَتَّخِذُونَAnd take for yourselveswatattakhidhūna
مَصَانِعَstrongholdsmaṣāniʿa
لَعَلَّكُمْthat you maylaʿallakum
تَخْلُدُونَlive forevertakhludūna
130
وَإِذَا بَطَشْتُم بَطَشْتُمْ جَبَّارِينَ
And when you strike, you strike as tyrants.

وَإِذَاAnd whenwa-idhā
بَطَشْتُمyou seizebaṭashtum
بَطَشْتُمْyou seizebaṭashtum
جَبَّارِينَ(as) tyrantsjabbārīna
131
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So fear Allāh and obey me.

فَٱتَّقُوا۟So fearfa-ittaqū
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
وَأَطِيعُونِand obey mewa-aṭīʿūni
132
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعْلَمُونَ
And fear He who provided you with that which you know,

وَٱتَّقُوا۟And fearwa-ittaqū
ٱلَّذِىٓthe One Whoalladhī
أَمَدَّكُمhas aided youamaddakum
بِمَاwith whatbimā
تَعْلَمُونَyou knowtaʿlamūna
133
أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنْعَٰمٍۢ وَبَنِينَ
Provided you with grazing livestock and children

أَمَدَّكُمHe has aided youamaddakum
بِأَنْعَٰمٍۢwith cattlebi-anʿāmin
وَبَنِينَand childrenwabanīna
Word by Word ▾
وَجَنَّٰتٍۢAnd gardenswajannātin
وَعُيُونٍand springswaʿuyūnin
135
إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍۢ
Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."

إِنِّىٓIndeed, Iinnī
أَخَافُ[I] fearakhāfu
عَلَيْكُمْfor youʿalaykum
عَذَابَ(the) punishmentʿadhāba
يَوْمٍ(of) a Dayyawmin
عَظِيمٍۢGreatʿaẓīmin
136
قَالُوا۟ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْنَآ أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْوَٰعِظِينَ
They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.

قَالُوا۟They saidqālū
سَوَآءٌ(It is) samesawāon
عَلَيْنَآto usʿalaynā
أَوَعَظْتَwhether you adviseawaʿaẓta
أَمْoram
لَمْnotlam
تَكُنyou aretakun
مِّنَofmina
ٱلْوَٰعِظِينَthe advisorsl-wāʿiẓīna
137
إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
This is not but the custom of the former peoples,

إِنْNotin
هَٰذَآ(is) thishādhā
إِلَّاbutillā
خُلُقُ(the) customkhuluqu
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)l-awalīna
138
وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
And we are not to be punished."

وَمَاAnd notwamā
نَحْنُwenaḥnu
بِمُعَذَّبِينَ(are) the ones to be punishedbimuʿadhabīna
139
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

فَكَذَّبُوهُSo they denied himfakadhabūhu
فَأَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْthen We destroyed themfa-ahlaknāhum
إِنَّIndeedinna
فِىinfī
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
لَءَايَةًۭsurely, is a signlaāyatan
وَمَاbut notwamā
كَانَarekāna
أَكْثَرُهُمmost of themaktharuhum
مُّؤْمِنِينَbelieversmu'minīna
140
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

Thamūd denied the messengers

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengersl-mur'salīna

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ صَٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When their brother Ṣāliḥ said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

لَهُمْto themlahum
أَخُوهُمْtheir brotherakhūhum
صَٰلِحٌSalihṣāliḥun
أَلَاWill notalā

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌۭ
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death],

فِىinfī
مَاwhatmā
هَٰهُنَآ(is) herehāhunā
ءَامِنِينَsecureāminīna
147
فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ
Within gardens and springs
Word by Word ▾
فِىInfī
جَنَّٰتٍۢgardensjannātin
وَعُيُونٍۢand springswaʿuyūnin
148
وَزُرُوعٍۢ وَنَخْلٍۢ طَلْعُهَا هَضِيمٌۭ
And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit?

وَزُرُوعٍۢAnd cornfieldswazurūʿin
وَنَخْلٍۢand date-palmswanakhlin
طَلْعُهَاits spadixṭalʿuhā
هَضِيمٌۭsofthaḍīmun
149
وَتَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًۭا فَٰرِهِينَ
And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.

وَتَنْحِتُونَAnd you carvewatanḥitūna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْجِبَالِthe mountainsl-jibāli
بُيُوتًۭاhousesbuyūtan
فَٰرِهِينَskillfullyfārihīna
150
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
So fear Allāh and obey me.
