O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allāh or [the sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out of iḥrām, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

Prohibited to you are dead animals,241 blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allāh, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars,242 and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islām as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals243 which you train as Allāh has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allāh upon it, and fear Allāh." Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.

This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation,244 desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janābah,245 then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women246 and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allāh does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.

And Allāh had already taken a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We delegated from among them twelve leaders. And Allāh said, "I am with you. If you establish prayer and give zakāh and believe in My messengers and support them and loan Allāh a goodly loan,247 I will surely remove from you your misdeeds and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever of you disbelieves after that has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way."

So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hardened. They distort words from their [proper] places [i.e., usages] and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded.248 And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul258 or for corruption [done] in the land259 - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one260 - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And Our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.261

About This Surah
Surah Al-Ma'idah makes covenant faithfulness a test of religious integrity. It addresses lawful food, pilgrimage boundaries, purification, justice, earlier scriptures, public wrongdoing, oaths, intoxicants, testimony, and Jesus with the disciples’ table. Its legal and interfaith passages require careful context. The chapter repeatedly insists that hostility, group loyalty, and religious status cannot excuse broken promises, distorted judgment, or unfair treatment.
Al-Ma'idah opens by commanding fulfillment of obligations, then applies covenant to animals, hunting, pilgrimage rites, food, marriage, and daily conduct. Religion is not reduced to private conviction; promises shape ordinary choices and public relationships. The legal detail also means that translation-based summaries must stop short of personalized rulings.
Purification before prayer appears beside reminders of divine favor and covenant. The command to stand firmly for justice follows: hatred of a people must not cause departure from fairness. This principle is essential when reading the chapter’s later material about conflict, communal boundaries, and the conduct of earlier religious communities.
Narratives concerning the Children of Israel include covenant, refusal, wandering, and the two sons of Adam. The condemnation of unlawful killing is followed by verses addressing violent public wrongdoing and repentance. These are matters of legitimate legal authority and due process; they do not authorize individuals or groups to impose punishments.
The chapter discusses Torah, Gospel, Quran, judgment, and manipulation of scripture or law. Verse 5:51 uses a relational term whose translation and historical-legal application cannot responsibly be reduced to a universal ban on ordinary friendship with every Jewish or Christian person. The surah itself records different responses among the People of the Book and commands justice despite hostility.
Later sections address lawful enjoyment, careless and deliberate oaths, intoxicants and gambling, hunting while in pilgrimage, testamentary procedure, and accountability of messengers. The table-spread narrative joins the disciples’ request with faith, responsibility, and warning. At the final judgment, Jesus rejects the claim that he told people to worship him and his mother. The chapter closes with God’s sovereignty, returning every covenant and contested claim to final accountability.
Core Themes
- Covenants tested through ordinary and public conduct
- Justice remaining obligatory under hostility
- Law bounded by repentance and legitimate authority
- Scripture honored rather than manipulated for advantage
- Interfaith boundaries requiring textual precision
- Jesus honored as messenger within divine sovereignty
Structure
Verses 1–11: obligations, lawful matters, and justice — 1-11
Food, pilgrimage boundaries, marriage, purification, covenant, and justice establish the chapter’s program. Legal observance and fair treatment are presented as connected expressions of faithfulness.
Verses 12–32: covenant, refusal, and unlawful killing — 12-32
Earlier covenant, disputed claims, the refusal to enter the land, and the story of Adam’s two sons lead to a severe moral statement about unjust killing and saving life.
Verses 33–50: public wrongdoing and revealed judgment — 33-50
Violent public corruption, theft, repentance, legal manipulation, Torah, Gospel, and Quran appear in a section where judgment is accountable to revelation and cannot become private enforcement.
Verses 51–86: communal relations and varied responses — 51-86
The chapter addresses loyalty, ridicule, religious claims, and different responses to revelation. Its terminology and circumstances require precision rather than blanket slogans about all interfaith relationships.
Verses 87–108: oaths, intoxicants, hunting, and testimony — 87-108
Lawful enjoyment is protected from self-invented prohibition, while deliberate oaths, intoxicants, gambling, pilgrimage hunting, and end-of-life testimony receive practical regulation.
Verses 109–120: the table and Jesus at judgment — 109-120
Messengers are questioned, Jesus recalls divine favor, the disciples request a table, and Jesus denies calling people to worship him or his mother. Sovereignty concludes the surah.
Reading Guide
Use justice as a controlling principle
Keep verse 8 visible while reading conflict and community-boundary passages. The surah explicitly rejects hatred as a reason to abandon fairness, so polemical application cannot erase that command.
Separate legal mapping from legal advice
Food, purification, marriage, penalties, oaths, intoxicants, hunting, and testimony have developed jurisprudential discussions. This entry identifies their location and moral frame without deciding a user’s case.
Refuse private punishment readings
Read verses 33–38 with legal authority, proof, repentance, and the chapter’s justice framework. They do not give private people permission to punish alleged wrongdoing.
Preserve the variety in interfaith passages
The chapter criticizes claims and conduct while also distinguishing responses among communities. Avoid turning a disputed relational term or one conflict setting into a description of every individual.
Key Passages
Covenant in food and ordinary life — 1-5
The opening command to fulfill obligations is immediately applied to lawful matters, sacred boundaries, food, and marriage. Covenant is therefore practical rather than an abstract identity claim. Its location in the chapter connects the preceding argument with the response that follows, so the surrounding verses should remain visible.
Purification, favor, and justice — 6-8
Purification prepares for prayer, remembered favor recalls covenant, and justice is required even toward a hated people. Ritual and public ethics are intentionally placed together. The surrounding verses define its immediate purpose and the limits that prevent a careless, polemical, or overbroad modern application.
The two sons and unlawful killing — 27-32
Jealous violence, refusal to murder, burial, remorse, and the gravity of unlawful killing form one moral sequence. The later legal material must not erase this warning. Read this language within the chapter’s full movement before drawing broader theological, legal, political, or devotional conclusions from it.
Public crime, repentance, and authority — 33-40
Severe legal language addresses violent public wrongdoing and is followed by repentance and divine authority. The passage belongs to public law, not private retaliation or extremist recruitment. Its force depends on the contrast and progression established around it, not on treating selected lines as a detached slogan.
Scripture, judgment, and a confirming Quran — 44-48
Torah, Gospel, and Quran are discussed through revelation, judgment, confirmation, and entrusted responsibility. The passage warns against changing judgment for advantage while recognizing a history of scripture. The passage remains part of the surah’s wider moral sequence, which supplies the proper direction for reflection, restraint, and response.
A differentiated interfaith response — 82-86
The verses describe a particular responsive group with humility and tears, preventing the chapter’s criticism from becoming a single undifferentiated portrait of every person in another community. This context protects the passage from becoming an isolated shortcut and preserves the chapter’s balance of warning, duty, and mercy.
Intoxicants, gambling, and social harm — 90-93
The prohibition is explained through hostility, distraction from remembrance, and neglect of prayer. Application remains a legal matter, while the ethical rationale includes both worship and social damage. Its role becomes clearer when adjacent verses remain in view and the chapter’s movement is allowed to frame the reader’s conclusions.
The table and Jesus’ testimony — 112-120
The disciples’ request, Jesus’ prayer, warning, and final testimony connect miraculous provision with responsibility. The ending preserves Jesus’ prophetic honor while rejecting worship directed to him. The purpose here is interpretive orientation, not a stand-alone ruling or promise detached from language, setting, authority, and ethical limits.
Recitation Note
No exclusive occasion, fixed count, or guaranteed outcome is asserted in this batch for reciting Surah Al-Ma'idah. Its legal and interfaith density calls for structured study, exact verse references, and qualified commentary rather than unsupported special-benefit claims.
Interpretation Limits
- Food, marriage, pilgrimage, criminal-law, oath, and testimony questions require qualified jurisprudential guidance.
- Verses 5:33–38 concern public law and never authorize vigilante punishment, terrorism, or private coercion.
- Verse 5:51 cannot responsibly be reduced to a blanket slogan about every Jewish or Christian friendship without linguistic, historical, and legal analysis.
- Criticism of religious claims or conduct must not become hatred, harassment, or stereotyping of contemporary communities.
- The Jesus passages should state Quranic theology accurately without degrading people who hold different beliefs.
