101
ٱلَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِى غِطَآءٍ عَن ذِكْرِى وَكَانُوا۟ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا
Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance,801 and they were not able to hear.802 [801] i.e., Allāh's signs or the Qur’ān. ↩ [802] They refused to listen to the Qur’ān or to understand it. ↩
Word by Word ▾ ٱلَّذِينَ Those alladhīna
كَانَتْ had been kānat
أَعْيُنُهُمْ their eyes aʿyunuhum
فِى within fī
غِطَآءٍ a cover ghiṭāin
عَن from ʿan
ذِكْرِى My remembrance dhik'rī
وَكَانُوا۟ and were wakānū
لَا not lā
يَسْتَطِيعُونَ able yastaṭīʿūna
سَمْعًا (to) hear samʿan
102
أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَن يَتَّخِذُوا۟ عِبَادِى مِن دُونِىٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۚ إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ نُزُلًۭا
Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.
Word by Word ▾ أَفَحَسِبَ Do then think afaḥasiba
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
كَفَرُوٓا۟ disbelieve kafarū
أَن that an
يَتَّخِذُوا۟ they (can) take yattakhidhū
عِبَادِى My servants ʿibādī
مِن besides Me min
دُونِىٓ besides Me dūnī
أَوْلِيَآءَ (as) protectors awliyāa
إِنَّآ Indeed , We innā
أَعْتَدْنَا We have prepared aʿtadnā
جَهَنَّمَ Hell jahannama
لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna
نُزُلًۭا (as) a lodging nuzulan
103
قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُم بِٱلْأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَٰلًا
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?
Word by Word ▾ قُلْ Say qul
هَلْ Shall hal
نُنَبِّئُكُم We inform you nunabbi-ukum
بِٱلْأَخْسَرِينَ of the greatest losers bil-akhsarīna
أَعْمَٰلًا (as to their) deeds aʿmālan
104
ٱلَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعًا
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work."
Word by Word ▾ ٱلَّذِينَ Those alladhīna
ضَلَّ is lost ḍalla
سَعْيُهُمْ their effort saʿyuhum
فِى in fī
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ the life l-ḥayati
ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world l-dun'yā
وَهُمْ while they wahum
يَحْسَبُونَ think yaḥsabūna
أَنَّهُمْ that they annahum
يُحْسِنُونَ (were) acquiring good yuḥ'sinūna
صُنْعًا (in) work ṣun'ʿan
105
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَلِقَآئِهِۦ فَحَبِطَتْ أَعْمَٰلُهُمْ فَلَا نُقِيمُ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ وَزْنًۭا
Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not assign to them on the Day of Resurrection any weight [i.e., importance].
Word by Word ▾ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika
ٱلَّذِينَ (are) the ones who alladhīna
كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve kafarū
بِـَٔايَٰتِ in the Verses biāyāti
رَبِّهِمْ (of) their Lord rabbihim
وَلِقَآئِهِۦ and the meeting (with) Him waliqāihi
فَحَبِطَتْ So (are) vain faḥabiṭat
أَعْمَٰلُهُمْ their deeds aʿmāluhum
فَلَا so not falā
نُقِيمُ We will assign nuqīmu
لَهُمْ for them lahum
يَوْمَ (on) the Day yawma
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati
وَزْنًۭا any weight waznan
106
ذَٰلِكَ جَزَآؤُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ بِمَا كَفَرُوا۟ وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ ءَايَٰتِى وَرُسُلِى هُزُوًا
That is their recompense - Hell - for what they denied and [because] they took My signs and My messengers in ridicule.
Word by Word ▾ ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika
جَزَآؤُهُمْ (is) their recompense jazāuhum
جَهَنَّمُ Hell jahannamu
بِمَا because bimā
كَفَرُوا۟ they disbelieved kafarū
وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ and took wa-ittakhadhū
ءَايَٰتِى My Verses āyātī
وَرُسُلِى and My Messengers warusulī
هُزُوًا (in) ridicule huzuwan
107
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتُ ٱلْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلًا
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise803 as a lodging, [803] i.e., the highest part of Paradise, al-Firdaus. ↩
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّ Indeed inna
ٱلَّذِينَ those who alladhīna
ءَامَنُوا۟ believed āmanū
وَعَمِلُوا۟ and did waʿamilū
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti
كَانَتْ for them will be kānat
لَهُمْ for them will be lahum
جَنَّٰتُ Gardens jannātu
ٱلْفِرْدَوْسِ (of) the Paradise l-fir'dawsi
نُزُلًا (as) a lodging nuzulan
108
خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا لَا يَبْغُونَ عَنْهَا حِوَلًۭا
Wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.
Word by Word ▾ خَٰلِدِينَ Abiding forever khālidīna
فِيهَا in it fīhā
لَا Not lā
يَبْغُونَ they will desire yabghūna
عَنْهَا from it ʿanhā
حِوَلًۭا any transfer ḥiwalan
109
قُل لَّوْ كَانَ ٱلْبَحْرُ مِدَادًۭا لِّكَلِمَٰتِ رَبِّى لَنَفِدَ ٱلْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَٰتُ رَبِّى وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِۦ مَدَدًۭا
Say, "If the sea were ink for [writing] the words804 of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it in [continual] supplement." [804] The words of Allāh's unlimited knowledge or words describing His attributes and His grandeur or praise of Him (subḥānahu wa taʿālā). ↩
Word by Word ▾ قُل Say qul
لَّوْ If law
كَانَ were kāna
ٱلْبَحْرُ the sea l-baḥru
مِدَادًۭا ink midādan
لِّكَلِمَٰتِ for (the) Words likalimāti
رَبِّى (of) my Lord rabbī
لَنَفِدَ surely (would be) exhausted lanafida
ٱلْبَحْرُ the sea l-baḥru
قَبْلَ before qabla
أَن [ that ] an
تَنفَدَ (were) exhausted tanfada
كَلِمَٰتُ (the) Words kalimātu
رَبِّى (of) my Lord rabbī
وَلَوْ even if walaw
جِئْنَا We brought ji'nā
بِمِثْلِهِۦ (the) like (of) it bimith'lihi
مَدَدًۭا (as) a supplement madadan
110
قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ بَشَرٌۭ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ أَنَّمَآ إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌۭ وَٰحِدٌۭ ۖ فَمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ لِقَآءَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًۭا صَٰلِحًۭا وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ أَحَدًۢا
Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone."
Word by Word ▾ قُلْ Say qul
إِنَّمَآ Only innamā
أَنَا۠ I anā
بَشَرٌۭ (am) a man basharun
مِّثْلُكُمْ like you mith'lukum
يُوحَىٰٓ Has been revealed yūḥā
إِلَىَّ to me ilayya
أَنَّمَآ that annamā
إِلَٰهُكُمْ your God ilāhukum
إِلَٰهٌۭ (is) God ilāhun
وَٰحِدٌۭ One wāḥidun
فَمَن So whoever faman
كَانَ is kāna
يَرْجُوا۟ hoping yarjū
لِقَآءَ (for the) meeting liqāa
رَبِّهِۦ (with) his Lord rabbihi
فَلْيَعْمَلْ let him do falyaʿmal
عَمَلًۭا deeds ʿamalan
صَٰلِحًۭا righteous ṣāliḥan
وَلَا and not walā
يُشْرِكْ associate yush'rik
بِعِبَادَةِ in (the) worship biʿibādati
رَبِّهِۦٓ (of) his Lord rabbihi
أَحَدًۢا anyone aḥadan
