Surah Al-Isra Verses 101–111

101

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ تِسْعَ ءَايَٰتٍۭ بَيِّنَٰتٍۢ ۖ فَسْـَٔلْ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ إِذْ جَآءَهُمْ فَقَالَ لَهُۥ فِرْعَوْنُ إِنِّى لَأَظُنُّكَ يَٰمُوسَىٰ مَسْحُورًۭا

And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs, so ask the Children of Israel [about] when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, "Indeed I think, O Moses, that you are affected by magic."

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlywalaqad
ءَاتَيْنَاWe had givenātaynā
مُوسَىٰMusamūsā
تِسْعَninetis'ʿa
ءَايَٰتٍۭSignsāyātin
بَيِّنَٰتٍۢclearbayyinātin
فَسْـَٔلْso askfasal
بَنِىٓ(the) Children of Israelbanī
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ(the) Children of Israelis'rāīla
إِذْwhenidh
جَآءَهُمْhe came to themjāahum
فَقَالَthen saidfaqāla
لَهُۥto himlahu
فِرْعَوْنُFiraunfir'ʿawnu
إِنِّىIndeed, Iinnī
لَأَظُنُّكَ[I] think youla-aẓunnuka
يَٰمُوسَىٰO Musayāmūsā
مَسْحُورًۭا(you are) bewitchedmasḥūran
102

قَالَ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَآ أَنزَلَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِلَّا رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ بَصَآئِرَ وَإِنِّى لَأَظُنُّكَ يَٰفِرْعَوْنُ مَثْبُورًۭا

[Moses] said, "You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence, and indeed I think,776 O Pharaoh, that you are destroyed."

  1. [776] i.e., I am certain.

لَقَدْVerilylaqad
عَلِمْتَyou have knownʿalim'ta
مَآnone
أَنزَلَhas sent downanzala
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِthesehāulāi
إِلَّاexceptillā
رَبُّ(the) Lordrabbu
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
بَصَآئِرَ(as) evidencebaṣāira
وَإِنِّىand indeed, Iwa-innī
لَأَظُنُّكَ[I] surely think youla-aẓunnuka
يَٰفِرْعَوْنُO Firaunyāfir'ʿawnu
مَثْبُورًۭا(you are) destroyedmathbūran
103

فَأَرَادَ أَن يَسْتَفِزَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ فَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ جَمِيعًۭا

So he intended to drive them from the land, but We drowned him and those with him all together.

فَأَرَادَSo he intendedfa-arāda
أَنtoan
يَسْتَفِزَّهُمdrive them outyastafizzahum
مِّنَfrommina
ٱلْأَرْضِthe landl-arḍi
فَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُbut We drowned himfa-aghraqnāhu
وَمَنand whowaman
مَّعَهُۥ(were) with himmaʿahu
جَمِيعًۭاalljamīʿan
104

وَقُلْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ لِبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱسْكُنُوا۟ ٱلْأَرْضَ فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعْدُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ جِئْنَا بِكُمْ لَفِيفًۭا

And We said after him [i.e., Pharaoh] to the Children of Israel, "Dwell in the land, and when there comes the promise [i.e., appointment] of the Hereafter, We will bring you forth in [one] gathering."

وَقُلْنَاAnd We saidwaqul'nā

بَعْدِهِۦafter himbaʿdihi
لِبَنِىٓto the Children of Israellibanī
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَto the Children of Israelis'rāīla
ٱسْكُنُوا۟Dwellus'kunū
ٱلْأَرْضَ(in) the landl-arḍa
فَإِذَاthen whenfa-idhā
جَآءَcomesjāa
وَعْدُ(the) promisewaʿdu
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterl-ākhirati
جِئْنَاWe will bringji'nā
بِكُمْyoubikum
لَفِيفًۭا(as) a mixed crowdlafīfan
105

وَبِٱلْحَقِّ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ وَبِٱلْحَقِّ نَزَلَ ۗ وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرًۭا وَنَذِيرًۭا

And with the truth We have sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

وَبِٱلْحَقِّAnd with the truthwabil-ḥaqi
أَنزَلْنَٰهُWe sent it downanzalnāhu
وَبِٱلْحَقِّand with the truthwabil-ḥaqi
نَزَلَit descendednazala
وَمَآAnd notwamā
أَرْسَلْنَٰكَWe sent youarsalnāka
إِلَّاexceptillā
مُبَشِّرًۭا(as) a bearer of glad tidingsmubashiran
وَنَذِيرًۭاand a warnerwanadhīran
106

وَقُرْءَانًۭا فَرَقْنَٰهُ لِتَقْرَأَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ عَلَىٰ مُكْثٍۢ وَنَزَّلْنَٰهُ تَنزِيلًۭا

And [it is] a Qur’ān which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.

وَقُرْءَانًۭاAnd the Quranwaqur'ānan
فَرَقْنَٰهُWe have dividedfaraqnāhu
لِتَقْرَأَهُۥthat you might recite itlitaqra-ahu
عَلَىtoʿalā
ٱلنَّاسِthe peoplel-nāsi
عَلَىٰatʿalā
مُكْثٍۢintervalsmuk'thin
وَنَزَّلْنَٰهُAnd We have revealed itwanazzalnāhu
تَنزِيلًۭا(in) stagestanzīlan
107

قُلْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَوْ لَا تُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ مِن قَبْلِهِۦٓ إِذَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ يَخِرُّونَ لِلْأَذْقَانِ سُجَّدًۭا

Say, "Believe in it or do not believe." Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it777 - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration,

  1. [777] i.e., the righteous among the People of the Scriptures who recognize the truth contained in the Qur’ān.

ٱلْعِلْمَthe knowledgel-ʿil'ma
مِنbefore itmin
قَبْلِهِۦٓbefore itqablihi
إِذَاwhenidhā
يُتْلَىٰit is recitedyut'lā
عَلَيْهِمْto themʿalayhim
يَخِرُّونَthey fallyakhirrūna
لِلْأَذْقَانِon their faceslil'adhqāni
سُجَّدًۭا(in) prostrationsujjadan
108

وَيَقُولُونَ سُبْحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِن كَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّنَا لَمَفْعُولًۭا

And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled."

وَيَقُولُونَAnd they saywayaqūlūna
سُبْحَٰنَGlory be tosub'ḥāna
رَبِّنَآour Lordrabbinā
إِنIndeedin
كَانَiskāna
وَعْدُ(the) promisewaʿdu
رَبِّنَا(of) our Lordrabbinā
لَمَفْعُولًۭاsurely fulfilledlamafʿūlan
109

وَيَخِرُّونَ لِلْأَذْقَانِ يَبْكُونَ وَيَزِيدُهُمْ خُشُوعًۭا ۩

And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Qur’ān] increases them in humble submission.

وَيَخِرُّونَAnd they fallwayakhirrūna
لِلْأَذْقَانِon their faceslil'adhqāni
يَبْكُونَweepingyabkūna
وَيَزِيدُهُمْand it increases themwayazīduhum
خُشُوعًۭا(in) humilitykhushūʿan
110

قُلِ ٱدْعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ أَوِ ٱدْعُوا۟ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنَ ۖ أَيًّۭا مَّا تَدْعُوا۟ فَلَهُ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَٱبْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ سَبِيلًۭا

Say, "Call upon Allāh or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-Raḥmān]. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.

أَيًّۭاBy whatever (name)ayyan
مَّاBy whatever (name)
تَدْعُوا۟you invoketadʿū
فَلَهُto Him (belongs)falahu
ٱلْأَسْمَآءُthe Most Beautiful Namesl-asmāu
ٱلْحُسْنَىٰthe Most Beautiful Namesl-ḥus'nā
وَلَاAnd (do) notwalā
تَجْهَرْbe loudtajhar
بِصَلَاتِكَin your prayersbiṣalātika
وَلَاand notwalā
تُخَافِتْbe silenttukhāfit
بِهَاthereinbihā
وَٱبْتَغِbut seekwa-ib'taghi
بَيْنَbetweenbayna
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
سَبِيلًۭاa waysabīlan
111

وَقُلِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى لَمْ يَتَّخِذْ وَلَدًۭا وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ شَرِيكٌۭ فِى ٱلْمُلْكِ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ وَلِىٌّۭ مِّنَ ٱلذُّلِّ ۖ وَكَبِّرْهُ تَكْبِيرًۢا

And say, "Praise to Allāh, who has not taken a son and has had no partner in [His] dominion and has no [need of a] protector out of weakness; and glorify Him with [great] glorification."

ٱلْحَمْدُAll Praisel-ḥamdu
لِلَّهِ(is) for Allahlillahi
ٱلَّذِىthe One Whoalladhī

يَتَّخِذْhas not takenyattakhidh
وَلَدًۭاa sonwaladan
وَلَمْand notwalam
يَكُنisyakun
لَّهُۥfor Himlahu
شَرِيكٌۭa partnersharīkun
فِىin
ٱلْمُلْكِthe dominionl-mul'ki
وَلَمْand notwalam
يَكُنisyakun
لَّهُۥfor Himlahu
وَلِىٌّۭany protectorwaliyyun
مِّنَout ofmina
ٱلذُّلِّweaknessl-dhuli
وَكَبِّرْهُAnd magnify Himwakabbir'hu
تَكْبِيرًۢا(with all) magnificencetakbīran
