Surah Al-Furqan Verses 51–77

51

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَبَعَثْنَا فِى كُلِّ قَرْيَةٍۢ نَّذِيرًۭا

And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.1033

  1. [1033] However, Allāh willed that Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) be sent as the final messenger for all peoples of the earth until the Day of Resurrection.

لَبَعَثْنَاsurely, We (would) have raisedlabaʿathnā

قَرْيَةٍۢtownqaryatin
نَّذِيرًۭاa warnernadhīran
52

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ وَجَٰهِدْهُم بِهِۦ جِهَادًۭا كَبِيرًۭا

So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a great striving.

وَجَٰهِدْهُمand strive (against) themwajāhid'hum
بِهِۦwith itbihi

كَبِيرًۭاgreatkabīran
53

۞ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ هَٰذَا عَذْبٌۭ فُرَاتٌۭ وَهَٰذَا مِلْحٌ أُجَاجٌۭ وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخًۭا وَحِجْرًۭا مَّحْجُورًۭا

And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas [i.e., bodies of water], one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.

ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhī
مَرَجَ(has) releasedmaraja
ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِthe two seasl-baḥrayni
هَٰذَا[this] (one)hādhā
عَذْبٌۭpalatableʿadhbun
فُرَاتٌۭand sweetfurātun
وَهَٰذَاand [this] (one)wahādhā
مِلْحٌsaltymil'ḥun
أُجَاجٌۭ(and) bitterujājun
وَجَعَلَand He has madewajaʿala
بَيْنَهُمَاbetween thembaynahumā
بَرْزَخًۭاa barrierbarzakhan
وَحِجْرًۭاand a partitionwaḥij'ran
مَّحْجُورًۭاforbiddenmaḥjūran
54

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ بَشَرًۭا فَجَعَلَهُۥ نَسَبًۭا وَصِهْرًۭا ۗ وَكَانَ رَبُّكَ قَدِيرًۭا

And it is He who has created from water [i.e., semen] a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].

ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Whoalladhī

ٱلْمَآءِthe waterl-māi
بَشَرًۭاhuman beingbasharan
فَجَعَلَهُۥand has made (for) himfajaʿalahu
نَسَبًۭاblood relationshipnasaban
وَصِهْرًۭاand marriage relationshipwaṣih'ran
وَكَانَAnd iswakāna
رَبُّكَyour Lordrabbuka
قَدِيرًۭاAll-Powerfulqadīran
55

وَيَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَنفَعُهُمْ وَلَا يَضُرُّهُمْ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱلْكَافِرُ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ ظَهِيرًۭا

But they worship rather than Allāh that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan].

وَيَعْبُدُونَBut they worshipwayaʿbudūna
مِنbesides Allahmin
دُونِbesides Allahdūni
ٱللَّهِbesides Allahl-lahi
مَاwhat
لَاnot profits them
يَنفَعُهُمْnot profits themyanfaʿuhum
وَلَاand notwalā
يَضُرُّهُمْharms themyaḍurruhum
وَكَانَand iswakāna
ٱلْكَافِرُthe disbelieverl-kāfiru
عَلَىٰagainstʿalā
رَبِّهِۦhis Lordrabbihi
ظَهِيرًۭاa helperẓahīran
56

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرًۭا وَنَذِيرًۭا

And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

أَرْسَلْنَٰكَWe sent youarsalnāka
إِلَّاexceptillā
مُبَشِّرًۭا(as) a bearer of glad tidingsmubashiran
وَنَذِيرًۭاand a warnerwanadhīran
57

قُلْ مَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ إِلَّا مَن شَآءَ أَن يَتَّخِذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًۭا

Say, "I do not ask of you for it any payment - only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way."

سَبِيلًۭاa waysabīlan
58

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْحَىِّ ٱلَّذِى لَا يَمُوتُ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِۦ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِۦ خَبِيرًا

And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allāh] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, [fully] Aware -

وَتَوَكَّلْAnd put your trustwatawakkal
عَلَىinʿalā
ٱلْحَىِّthe Ever-Livingl-ḥayi
ٱلَّذِىthe One Whoalladhī
لَاdoes not die
يَمُوتُdoes not dieyamūtu
وَسَبِّحْand glorifywasabbiḥ
بِحَمْدِهِۦwith His Praisebiḥamdihi
وَكَفَىٰAnd sufficient iswakafā
بِهِۦHebihi
بِذُنُوبِregarding the sinsbidhunūbi
عِبَادِهِۦ(of) His slavesʿibādihi
خَبِيرًاAll-Awarekhabīran
59

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍۢ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۚ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ فَسْـَٔلْ بِهِۦ خَبِيرًۭا

He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne1034 - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)].

سِتَّةِsixsittati
أَيَّامٍۢperiodsayyāmin
ثُمَّthenthumma
ٱسْتَوَىٰHe established Himselfis'tawā
عَلَىoverʿalā
ٱلْعَرْشِthe Thronel-ʿarshi
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُthe Most Graciousl-raḥmānu
فَسْـَٔلْso askfasal
بِهِۦHimbihi
خَبِيرًۭا(as He is) All-Awarekhabīran
60

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ قَالُوا۟ وَمَا ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ أَنَسْجُدُ لِمَا تَأْمُرُنَا وَزَادَهُمْ نُفُورًۭا ۩

And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion.

ٱسْجُدُوا۟Prostrateus'judū
لِلرَّحْمَٰنِto the Most Graciouslilrraḥmāni
قَالُوا۟They sayqālū
وَمَاAnd whatwamā
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ(is) the Most Graciousl-raḥmānu
أَنَسْجُدُShould we prostrateanasjudu
لِمَاto whatlimā
تَأْمُرُنَاyou order ustamurunā
وَزَادَهُمْAnd it increases themwazādahum
نُفُورًۭا(in) aversionnufūran
61

تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًۭا وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا سِرَٰجًۭا وَقَمَرًۭا مُّنِيرًۭا

Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon.

ٱلَّذِىWhoalladhī
جَعَلَhas placedjaʿala
فِىin
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe skiesl-samāi
بُرُوجًۭاconstellationsburūjan
وَجَعَلَand has placedwajaʿala
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
سِرَٰجًۭاa lampsirājan
وَقَمَرًۭاand a moonwaqamaran
مُّنِيرًۭاshiningmunīran
62

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ خِلْفَةًۭ لِّمَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يَذَّكَّرَ أَوْ أَرَادَ شُكُورًۭا

And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude.

ٱلَّيْلَthe nightal-layla
وَٱلنَّهَارَand the daywal-nahāra

لِّمَنْfor whoeverliman
أَرَادَdesiresarāda
أَنtoan
يَذَّكَّرَrememberyadhakkara
أَوْoraw
أَرَادَdesiresarāda
شُكُورًۭاto be thankfulshukūran
63

وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ هَوْنًۭا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ ٱلْجَٰهِلُونَ قَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًۭا

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily,1035 and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,1036

  1. [1035] i.e., gently, with dignity but without arrogance.
  2. [1036] Or "safety," i.e., words free from fault or evil.

وَعِبَادُAnd (the) slaveswaʿibādu
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ(of) the Most Graciousl-raḥmāni
ٱلَّذِينَ(are) those whoalladhīna
يَمْشُونَwalkyamshūna
عَلَىonʿalā
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
هَوْنًۭا(in) humblenesshawnan
وَإِذَاand whenwa-idhā
خَاطَبَهُمُaddress themkhāṭabahumu
ٱلْجَٰهِلُونَthe ignorant onesl-jāhilūna
قَالُوا۟they sayqālū
سَلَٰمًۭاPeacesalāman
64

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّدًۭا وَقِيَٰمًۭا

And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
يَبِيتُونَspend (the) nightyabītūna
لِرَبِّهِمْbefore their Lordlirabbihim
سُجَّدًۭاprostratingsujjadan
وَقِيَٰمًۭاand standingwaqiyāman
65

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا

And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
يَقُولُونَsayyaqūlūna
رَبَّنَاOur Lordrabbanā
ٱصْرِفْAvertiṣ'rif
عَنَّاfrom usʿannā
عَذَابَthe punishmentʿadhāba
جَهَنَّمَ(of) Helljahannama
إِنَّIndeedinna
عَذَابَهَاits punishmentʿadhābahā
كَانَiskāna
غَرَامًاinseparablegharāman
66

إِنَّهَا سَآءَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّۭا وَمُقَامًۭا

Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."

مُسْتَقَرًّۭاabodemus'taqarran
وَمُقَامًۭاand resting placewamuqāman
67

وَٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ لَمْ يُسْرِفُوا۟ وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُوا۟ وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ قَوَامًۭا

And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
إِذَآwhenidhā
أَنفَقُوا۟they spendanfaqū
لَمْ(are) not extravagantlam
يُسْرِفُوا۟(are) not extravagantyus'rifū
وَلَمْand are not stingywalam
يَقْتُرُوا۟and are not stingyyaqturū
وَكَانَbut arewakāna
بَيْنَbetweenbayna
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
قَوَامًۭاmoderateqawāman
68

وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ ٱلنَّفْسَ ٱلَّتِى حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًۭا

And those who do not invoke1037 with Allāh another deity or kill the soul which Allāh has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.

  1. [1037] Or "worship."

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
لَا(do) not
يَدْعُونَinvokeyadʿūna
مَعَwithmaʿa
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
إِلَٰهًاgodilāhan
ءَاخَرَanotherākhara
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
يَقْتُلُونَ[they] killyaqtulūna
ٱلنَّفْسَthe soull-nafsa
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
حَرَّمَAllah has forbiddenḥarrama
ٱللَّهُAllah has forbiddenl-lahu
إِلَّاexceptillā
بِٱلْحَقِّby rightbil-ḥaqi
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
يَزْنُونَcommit unlawful sexual intercourseyaznūna
وَمَنAnd whoeverwaman
يَفْعَلْdoesyafʿal
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
يَلْقَwill meetyalqa
أَثَامًۭاa penaltyathāman
69

يُضَٰعَفْ لَهُ ٱلْعَذَابُ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ وَيَخْلُدْ فِيهِۦ مُهَانًا

Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated -

يُضَٰعَفْWill be doubledyuḍāʿaf
لَهُfor himlahu
ٱلْعَذَابُthe punishmentl-ʿadhābu
يَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawma
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ(of) Resurrectionl-qiyāmati
وَيَخْلُدْand he will abide foreverwayakhlud
فِيهِۦthereinfīhi
مُهَانًاhumiliatedmuhānan
70

إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًۭا صَٰلِحًۭا فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ ٱللَّهُ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ حَسَنَٰتٍۢ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا

Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allāh will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.

وَءَامَنَand believeswaāmana
وَعَمِلَand doeswaʿamila
عَمَلًۭاrighteous deedsʿamalan
صَٰلِحًۭاrighteous deedsṣāliḥan
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَthen (for) thosefa-ulāika
يُبَدِّلُAllah will replaceyubaddilu
ٱللَّهُAllah will replacel-lahu
سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْtheir evil deedssayyiātihim
حَسَنَٰتٍۢ(with) good onesḥasanātin
وَكَانَAnd iswakāna
ٱللَّهُAllahl-lahu
غَفُورًۭاOft-Forgivingghafūran
رَّحِيمًۭاMost Mercifulraḥīman
71

وَمَن تَابَ وَعَمِلَ صَٰلِحًۭا فَإِنَّهُۥ يَتُوبُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَتَابًۭا

And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allāh with [accepted] repentance.

وَعَمِلَand doeswaʿamila
صَٰلِحًۭاrighteous (deeds)ṣāliḥan
فَإِنَّهُۥthen indeed, hefa-innahu
يَتُوبُturnsyatūbu
إِلَىtoilā
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
مَتَابًۭا(with) repentancematāban
72

وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ ٱلزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِٱللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا۟ كِرَامًۭا

And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity.

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
لَا(do) not
يَشْهَدُونَbear witnessyashhadūna
ٱلزُّورَ(to) the falsehoodl-zūra
وَإِذَاand whenwa-idhā
مَرُّوا۟they passmarrū
بِٱللَّغْوِby futilitybil-laghwi
مَرُّوا۟they passmarrū
كِرَامًۭا(as) dignified oneskirāman
73

وَٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَمْ يَخِرُّوا۟ عَلَيْهَا صُمًّۭا وَعُمْيَانًۭا

And those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind.

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna

ذُكِّرُوا۟they are remindeddhukkirū
بِـَٔايَٰتِof (the) Versesbiāyāti
رَبِّهِمْ(of) their Lordrabbihim
لَمْ(do) notlam
يَخِرُّوا۟fallyakhirrū
عَلَيْهَاupon themʿalayhā
صُمًّۭاdeafṣumman
وَعُمْيَانًۭاand blindwaʿum'yānan
74

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَٰجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍۢ وَٱجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes1038 and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous."

  1. [1038] i.e., a source of happiness due to their righteousness.

وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whowa-alladhīna
يَقُولُونَsayyaqūlūna
رَبَّنَاOur Lordrabbanā
هَبْGranthab
لَنَاto uslanā
مِنْfrommin
أَزْوَٰجِنَاour spousesazwājinā
وَذُرِّيَّٰتِنَاand our offspringwadhurriyyātinā
قُرَّةَcomfortqurrata
أَعْيُنٍۢ(to) our eyesaʿyunin
وَٱجْعَلْنَاand make uswa-ij'ʿalnā
لِلْمُتَّقِينَfor the righteouslil'muttaqīna
إِمَامًاa leaderimāman
75

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يُجْزَوْنَ ٱلْغُرْفَةَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ وَيُلَقَّوْنَ فِيهَا تَحِيَّةًۭ وَسَلَٰمًا

Those will be awarded the Chamber1039 for what they patiently endured, and they will be received therein with greetings and [words of] peace,

  1. [1039] The most elevated portion of Paradise.

يُجْزَوْنَwill be awardedyuj'zawna
ٱلْغُرْفَةَthe Chamberl-ghur'fata
بِمَاbecausebimā
صَبَرُوا۟they were patientṣabarū
وَيُلَقَّوْنَand they will be metwayulaqqawna
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
تَحِيَّةًۭ(with) greetingstaḥiyyatan
وَسَلَٰمًاand peacewasalāman
76

خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ حَسُنَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّۭا وَمُقَامًۭا

Abiding eternally therein. Good is the settlement and residence.

خَٰلِدِينَWill abide foreverkhālidīna
فِيهَاin itfīhā
حَسُنَتْGoodḥasunat
مُسْتَقَرًّۭا(is) the settlementmus'taqarran
وَمُقَامًۭاand a resting placewamuqāman
77

قُلْ مَا يَعْبَؤُا۟ بِكُمْ رَبِّى لَوْلَا دُعَآؤُكُمْ ۖ فَقَدْ كَذَّبْتُمْ فَسَوْفَ يَكُونُ لِزَامًۢا

Say, "What would my Lord care for you if not for your supplication?"1040 For you [disbelievers] have denied, so it [i.e., your denial] is going to be adherent.1041

  1. [1040] i.e., faith and worship. An alternative meaning is "What would my Lord do with you..."
  2. [1041] It will remain with them, causing punishment to be required and imperative upon them.

كَذَّبْتُمْyou have deniedkadhabtum
فَسَوْفَso soonfasawfa
يَكُونُwill beyakūnu
لِزَامًۢاthe inevitable (punishment)lizāman
