101
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ سَبَقَتْ لَهُم مِّنَّا ٱلْحُسْنَىٰٓ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عَنْهَا مُبْعَدُونَ
Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it far removed.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّ Indeed inna
ٱلَّذِينَ those alladhīna
سَبَقَتْ has gone forth sabaqat
لَهُم for them lahum
مِّنَّا from Us minnā
ٱلْحُسْنَىٰٓ the good l-ḥus'nā
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ those ulāika
عَنْهَا from it ʿanhā
مُبْعَدُونَ (will be) removed far mub'ʿadūna
102
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ حَسِيسَهَا ۖ وَهُمْ فِى مَا ٱشْتَهَتْ أَنفُسُهُمْ خَٰلِدُونَ
They will not hear its sound, while they are, in that which their souls desire, abiding eternally.
Word by Word ▾ لَا Not lā
يَسْمَعُونَ they will hear yasmaʿūna
حَسِيسَهَا (the) slightest sound of it ḥasīsahā
وَهُمْ and they wahum
فِى in fī
مَا what mā
ٱشْتَهَتْ desire ish'tahat
أَنفُسُهُمْ their souls anfusuhum
خَٰلِدُونَ will abide forever khālidūna
103
لَا يَحْزُنُهُمُ ٱلْفَزَعُ ٱلْأَكْبَرُ وَتَتَلَقَّىٰهُمُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ هَٰذَا يَوْمُكُمُ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ
They will not be grieved by the greatest terror,907 and the angels will meet them, [saying], "This is your Day which you have been promised" - [907] The events of the Last Hour or of the Resurrection. ↩
Word by Word ▾ لَا Not lā
يَحْزُنُهُمُ will grieve them yaḥzunuhumu
ٱلْفَزَعُ the terror l-fazaʿu
ٱلْأَكْبَرُ [ the ] greatest l-akbaru
وَتَتَلَقَّىٰهُمُ and will meet them watatalaqqāhumu
ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ the Angels l-malāikatu
هَٰذَا This hādhā
يَوْمُكُمُ (is) your Day yawmukumu
ٱلَّذِى which alladhī
كُنتُمْ you were kuntum
تُوعَدُونَ promised tūʿadūna
104
يَوْمَ نَطْوِى ٱلسَّمَآءَ كَطَىِّ ٱلسِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ ۚ كَمَا بَدَأْنَآ أَوَّلَ خَلْقٍۢ نُّعِيدُهُۥ ۚ وَعْدًا عَلَيْنَآ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا فَٰعِلِينَ
The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.908 [908] More literally, "Indeed, We are ever doers" of what We will. ↩
Word by Word ▾ يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma
نَطْوِى We will fold naṭwī
ٱلسَّمَآءَ the heaven l-samāa
كَطَىِّ like (the) folding kaṭayyi
ٱلسِّجِلِّ (of) a scroll l-sijili
لِلْكُتُبِ for records lil'kutubi
كَمَا As kamā
بَدَأْنَآ We began badanā
أَوَّلَ (the) first awwala
خَلْقٍۢ creation khalqin
نُّعِيدُهُۥ We will repeat it nuʿīduhu
وَعْدًا a promise waʿdan
عَلَيْنَآ upon Us ʿalaynā
إِنَّا Indeed , We innā
كُنَّا We are kunnā
فَٰعِلِينَ (the) Doers fāʿilīna
105
وَلَقَدْ كَتَبْنَا فِى ٱلزَّبُورِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱلذِّكْرِ أَنَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ يَرِثُهَا عِبَادِىَ ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ
And We have already written in the book [of Psalms]909 after the [previous] mention910 that the land [of Paradise] is inherited by My righteous servants. [909] Az-Zabūr can also mean "scriptures" in general. ↩ [910] i.e., the Torah. The "mention" may also refer to the original inscription with Allāh, i.e., the Preserved Slate (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ). ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad
كَتَبْنَا We have written katabnā
فِى in fī
ٱلزَّبُورِ the Scripture l-zabūri
مِنۢ after min
بَعْدِ after baʿdi
ٱلذِّكْرِ the mention l-dhik'ri
أَنَّ that anna
ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth l-arḍa
يَرِثُهَا will inherit it yarithuhā
عِبَادِىَ My slaves ʿibādiya
ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ the righteous l-ṣāliḥūna
106
إِنَّ فِى هَٰذَا لَبَلَٰغًۭا لِّقَوْمٍ عَٰبِدِينَ
Indeed, in this [Qur’ān] is notification for a worshipping people.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّ Indeed inna
فِى in fī
هَٰذَا this hādhā
لَبَلَٰغًۭا surely is a Message labalāghan
لِّقَوْمٍ for a people liqawmin
عَٰبِدِينَ worshippers ʿābidīna
107
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةًۭ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ
And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.
Word by Word ▾ وَمَآ And not wamā
أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ We have sent you arsalnāka
إِلَّا but illā
رَحْمَةًۭ (as) a mercy raḥmatan
لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ for the worlds lil'ʿālamīna
108
قُلْ إِنَّمَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ أَنَّمَآ إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌۭ وَٰحِدٌۭ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ
Say, "It is only revealed to me that your god is but one God; so will you be Muslims [in submission to Him]?"
Word by Word ▾ قُلْ Say qul
إِنَّمَا Only innamā
يُوحَىٰٓ it is revealed yūḥā
إِلَىَّ to me ilayya
أَنَّمَآ that annamā
إِلَٰهُكُمْ your god ilāhukum
إِلَٰهٌۭ (is) God ilāhun
وَٰحِدٌۭ One wāḥidun
فَهَلْ so will fahal
أَنتُم you antum
مُّسْلِمُونَ submit (to Him) mus'limūna
109
فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُلْ ءَاذَنتُكُمْ عَلَىٰ سَوَآءٍۢ ۖ وَإِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌ أَم بَعِيدٌۭ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ
But if they turn away, then say, "I have announced to [all of] you equally.911 And I know not whether near or far is that which you are promised. [911] The Prophet (ﷺ) made this message known to all people, not concealing any of it from anyone or preferring any group over another. ↩
Word by Word ▾ فَإِن But if fa-in
تَوَلَّوْا۟ they turn away tawallaw
فَقُلْ then say faqul
ءَاذَنتُكُمْ I (have) announced to you ādhantukum
عَلَىٰ equally ʿalā
سَوَآءٍۢ equally sawāin
وَإِنْ And not wa-in
أَدْرِىٓ I know adrī
أَقَرِيبٌ whether is near aqarībun
أَم or am
بَعِيدٌۭ far baʿīdun
مَّا what mā
تُوعَدُونَ you are promised tūʿadūna
110
إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَكْتُمُونَ
Indeed, He knows what is declared of speech, and He knows what you conceal.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّهُۥ Indeed , He innahu
يَعْلَمُ knows yaʿlamu
ٱلْجَهْرَ the declared l-jahra
مِنَ [ of ] mina
ٱلْقَوْلِ [ the ] speech l-qawli
وَيَعْلَمُ and He knows wayaʿlamu
مَا what mā
تَكْتُمُونَ you conceal taktumūna
111
وَإِنْ أَدْرِى لَعَلَّهُۥ فِتْنَةٌۭ لَّكُمْ وَمَتَٰعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍۢ
And I know not; perhaps it912 is a trial for you and enjoyment for a time." [912] The postponement of punishment. ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَإِنْ And not wa-in
أَدْرِى I know adrī
لَعَلَّهُۥ perhaps it may be laʿallahu
فِتْنَةٌۭ a trial fit'natun
لَّكُمْ for you lakum
وَمَتَٰعٌ and an enjoyment wamatāʿun
إِلَىٰ for ilā
حِينٍۢ a time ḥīnin
112
قَٰلَ رَبِّ ٱحْكُم بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَرَبُّنَا ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ
[The Prophet (ﷺ)] has said, "My Lord, judge [between us] in truth. And our Lord is the Most Merciful, the one whose help is sought against that which you describe."913 [913] i.e., their lies and disbelief. ↩
Word by Word ▾ قَٰلَ He said qāla
رَبِّ My Lord rabbi
ٱحْكُم judge uḥ'kum
بِٱلْحَقِّ in truth bil-ḥaqi
وَرَبُّنَا And our Lord warabbunā
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ (is) the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu
ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ the One Whose help is sought l-mus'taʿānu
عَلَىٰ against ʿalā
مَا what mā
تَصِفُونَ you attribute taṣifūna
