Surah Al-Anbya Verses 51–100

51

۞ وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَآ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ رُشْدَهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا بِهِۦ عَٰلِمِينَ

And We had certainly given Abraham his sound judgement before,891 and We were of him well-Knowing

  1. [891] i.e., before Moses. Allāh had guided him from early youth.

وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqad
ءَاتَيْنَآWe gaveātaynā
إِبْرَٰهِيمَIbrahimib'rāhīma
رُشْدَهُۥhis guidancerush'dahu
مِنbeforemin
قَبْلُbeforeqablu
وَكُنَّاand We werewakunnā
بِهِۦabout himbihi
عَٰلِمِينَWell-Knowingʿālimīna
52

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلتَّمَاثِيلُ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَنتُمْ لَهَا عَٰكِفُونَ

When he said to his father and his people, "What are these statues to which you are devoted?"

قَالَhe saidqāla
لِأَبِيهِto his fatherli-abīhi
وَقَوْمِهِۦand his peoplewaqawmihi
مَاWhat
هَٰذِهِ(are) thesehādhihi
ٱلتَّمَاثِيلُ[the] statuesl-tamāthīlu
ٱلَّتِىٓwhichallatī
أَنتُمْyouantum
لَهَاto itlahā
عَٰكِفُونَ(are) devotedʿākifūna
53

قَالُوا۟ وَجَدْنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا لَهَا عَٰبِدِينَ

They said, "We found our fathers worshippers of them."

وَجَدْنَآWe foundwajadnā
ءَابَآءَنَاour forefathersābāanā
لَهَاof themlahā
عَٰبِدِينَworshippersʿābidīna
54

قَالَ لَقَدْ كُنتُمْ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُمْ فِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ

He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error."

أَنتُمْ[you]antum
وَءَابَآؤُكُمْand your forefatherswaābāukum
فِى(were) in
ضَلَٰلٍۢan errorḍalālin

55

قَالُوٓا۟ أَجِئْتَنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ أَمْ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱللَّٰعِبِينَ

They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?"

قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālū
أَجِئْتَنَاHave you come to usaji'tanā
بِٱلْحَقِّwith the truthbil-ḥaqi
أَمْoram
أَنتَyouanta
مِنَ(are) ofmina
ٱللَّٰعِبِينَthose who playl-lāʿibīna
56

قَالَ بَل رَّبُّكُمْ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلَّذِى فَطَرَهُنَّ وَأَنَا۠ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ

He said, "[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify.

بَلNaybal
رَّبُّكُمْyour Lordrabbukum
رَبُّ(is the) Lordrabbu
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
ٱلَّذِىthe One Whoalladhī
فَطَرَهُنَّcreated themfaṭarahunna
وَأَنَا۠and I amwa-anā
عَلَىٰtoʿalā
ذَٰلِكُمthatdhālikum
مِّنَofmina
ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَthe witnessesl-shāhidīna
57

وَتَٱللَّهِ لَأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَٰمَكُم بَعْدَ أَن تُوَلُّوا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ

And [I swear] by Allāh, I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away."

وَتَٱللَّهِAnd by Allahwatal-lahi
لَأَكِيدَنَّsurely, I will planla-akīdanna
أَصْنَٰمَكُم(against) your idolsaṣnāmakum
بَعْدَafterbaʿda
أَن[that]an
تُوَلُّوا۟you go awaytuwallū
مُدْبِرِينَturning (your) backsmud'birīna
58

فَجَعَلَهُمْ جُذَٰذًا إِلَّا كَبِيرًۭا لَّهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ يَرْجِعُونَ

So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question].

إِلَّاexceptillā
كَبِيرًۭاa large (one)kabīran
لَّهُمْof themlahum
لَعَلَّهُمْso that they maylaʿallahum
إِلَيْهِto itilayhi
يَرْجِعُونَreturnyarjiʿūna
59

قَالُوا۟ مَن فَعَلَ هَٰذَا بِـَٔالِهَتِنَآ إِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers."

بِـَٔالِهَتِنَآto our godsbiālihatinā
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahu

ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna
60

قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا فَتًۭى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُۥٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ

They said, "We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham."

سَمِعْنَاWe heardsamiʿ'nā
فَتًۭىa youthfatan
يَذْكُرُهُمْmention themyadhkuruhum
يُقَالُhe is calledyuqālu
لَهُۥٓhe is calledlahu
إِبْرَٰهِيمُIbrahimib'rāhīmu
61

قَالُوا۟ فَأْتُوا۟ بِهِۦ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْيُنِ ٱلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُونَ

They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify."892

  1. [892] To what they had heard him say. It may also mean "...that they may witness [what will be done to him as punishment]."

أَعْيُنِ(the) eyesaʿyuni

لَعَلَّهُمْso that they maylaʿallahum
يَشْهَدُونَbear witnessyashhadūna
62

قَالُوٓا۟ ءَأَنتَ فَعَلْتَ هَٰذَا بِـَٔالِهَتِنَا يَٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ

They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?"

قَالُوٓا۟They saidqālū
ءَأَنتَHave youa-anta
فَعَلْتَdonefaʿalta
هَٰذَاthishādhā
بِـَٔالِهَتِنَاto our godsbiālihatinā
يَٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُO Ibrahimyāib'rāhīmu
63

قَالَ بَلْ فَعَلَهُۥ كَبِيرُهُمْ هَٰذَا فَسْـَٔلُوهُمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ يَنطِقُونَ

He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."

فَعَلَهُۥ(some doer) did itfaʿalahu
كَبِيرُهُمْTheir chiefkabīruhum
هَٰذَا(is) thishādhā
فَسْـَٔلُوهُمْSo ask themfasalūhum
إِنifin
كَانُوا۟they (can)kānū
يَنطِقُونَspeakyanṭiqūna
64

فَرَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّكُمْ أَنتُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers."

فَرَجَعُوٓا۟So they returnedfarajaʿū
إِلَىٰٓtoilā
أَنفُسِهِمْthemselvesanfusihim
فَقَالُوٓا۟and saidfaqālū
إِنَّكُمْIndeed, youinnakum
أَنتُمُ[you]antumu
ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ(are) the wrongdoersl-ẓālimūna
65

ثُمَّ نُكِسُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رُءُوسِهِمْ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ يَنطِقُونَ

Then they reversed themselves,893 [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!"

  1. [893] After first admitting their error, they were seized by pride and obstinacy.

نُكِسُوا۟they were turnednukisū
عَلَىٰonʿalā
رُءُوسِهِمْtheir headsruūsihim
لَقَدْVerilylaqad
عَلِمْتَyou knowʿalim'ta
مَاnot
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِthesehāulāi
يَنطِقُونَ(can) speakyanṭiqūna
66

قَالَ أَفَتَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَنفَعُكُمْ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا يَضُرُّكُمْ

He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allāh that which does not benefit you at all or harm you?

أَفَتَعْبُدُونَThen do you worshipafataʿbudūna
مِنbesidesmin
دُونِbesidesdūni
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
مَاwhat
لَا(does) not
يَنفَعُكُمْbenefit youyanfaʿukum
شَيْـًۭٔا(in) anythingshayan
وَلَاand notwalā
يَضُرُّكُمْharms youyaḍurrukum
67

أُفٍّۢ لَّكُمْ وَلِمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

Uff894 to you and to what you worship instead of Allāh. Then will you not use reason?"

  1. [894] An exclamation of anger and displeasure.

تَعْبُدُونَyou worshiptaʿbudūna

ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
أَفَلَاThen will notafalā
تَعْقِلُونَyou use reasontaʿqilūna
68

قَالُوا۟ حَرِّقُوهُ وَٱنصُرُوٓا۟ ءَالِهَتَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ فَٰعِلِينَ

They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act."

حَرِّقُوهُBurn himḥarriqūhu
وَٱنصُرُوٓا۟and supportwa-unṣurū
ءَالِهَتَكُمْyour godsālihatakum
إِنifin
كُنتُمْyou arekuntum
فَٰعِلِينَdoersfāʿilīna
69

قُلْنَا يَٰنَارُ كُونِى بَرْدًۭا وَسَلَٰمًا عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham."

يَٰنَارُO fireyānāru
كُونِىBekūnī
بَرْدًۭاcool [ness]bardan
وَسَلَٰمًاand safe [ty]wasalāman
عَلَىٰٓforʿalā
إِبْرَٰهِيمَIbrahimib'rāhīma
70

وَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَيْدًۭا فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمُ ٱلْأَخْسَرِينَ

And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the greatest losers.

وَأَرَادُوا۟And they intendedwa-arādū
بِهِۦfor himbihi
كَيْدًۭاa plankaydan
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمُbut We made themfajaʿalnāhumu
ٱلْأَخْسَرِينَthe greatest losersl-akhsarīna
71

وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُ وَلُوطًا إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلَّتِى بَٰرَكْنَا فِيهَا لِلْعَٰلَمِينَ

And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds [i.e., peoples].

وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُAnd We delivered himwanajjaynāhu
وَلُوطًاand Lutwalūṭan
إِلَىtoilā
ٱلْأَرْضِthe landl-arḍi
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
بَٰرَكْنَاWe (had) blessedbāraknā
فِيهَا[in it]fīhā
لِلْعَٰلَمِينَfor the worldslil'ʿālamīna
72

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ نَافِلَةًۭ ۖ وَكُلًّۭا جَعَلْنَا صَٰلِحِينَ

And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in addition, and all [of them] We made righteous.

وَوَهَبْنَاAnd We bestowedwawahabnā
لَهُۥٓon himlahu
إِسْحَٰقَIsaacis'ḥāqa
وَيَعْقُوبَand Yaqubwayaʿqūba
نَافِلَةًۭ(in) additionnāfilatan
وَكُلًّۭاand allwakullan
جَعَلْنَاWe madejaʿalnā
صَٰلِحِينَrighteousṣāliḥīna
73

وَجَعَلْنَٰهُمْ أَئِمَّةًۭ يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِمْ فِعْلَ ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ وَإِقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَإِيتَآءَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةِ ۖ وَكَانُوا۟ لَنَا عَٰبِدِينَ

And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakāh; and they were worshippers of Us.

وَجَعَلْنَٰهُمْAnd We made themwajaʿalnāhum
أَئِمَّةًۭleadersa-immatan
يَهْدُونَthey guideyahdūna
بِأَمْرِنَاby Our Commandbi-amrinā
وَأَوْحَيْنَآAnd We inspiredwa-awḥaynā
إِلَيْهِمْto themilayhim
فِعْلَ(the) doingfiʿ'la
ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ(of) good deedsl-khayrāti
وَإِقَامَand establishmentwa-iqāma
ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ(of) the prayerl-ṣalati
وَإِيتَآءَand givingwaītāa
ٱلزَّكَوٰةِ(of) zakahl-zakati
وَكَانُوا۟and they werewakānū
لَنَاof Uslanā
عَٰبِدِينَworshippersʿābidīna
74

وَلُوطًا ءَاتَيْنَٰهُ حُكْمًۭا وَعِلْمًۭا وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْقَرْيَةِ ٱلَّتِى كَانَت تَّعْمَلُ ٱلْخَبَٰٓئِثَ ۗ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمَ سَوْءٍۢ فَٰسِقِينَ

And to Lot We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient.

وَلُوطًاAnd (to) Lutwalūṭan
ءَاتَيْنَٰهُWe gave himātaynāhu
حُكْمًۭاjudgmentḥuk'man
وَعِلْمًۭاand knowledgewaʿil'man
وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُand We saved himwanajjaynāhu
مِنَfrommina
ٱلْقَرْيَةِthe townl-qaryati
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
كَانَتwaskānat
تَّعْمَلُdoingtaʿmalu
ٱلْخَبَٰٓئِثَwicked deedsl-khabāitha
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyinnahum
كَانُوا۟werekānū
قَوْمَa peopleqawma
سَوْءٍۢevilsawin
فَٰسِقِينَdefiantly disobedientfāsiqīna
75

وَأَدْخَلْنَٰهُ فِى رَحْمَتِنَآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

And We admitted him into Our mercy. Indeed, he was of the righteous.

وَأَدْخَلْنَٰهُAnd We admitted himwa-adkhalnāhu
فِىinto
رَحْمَتِنَآOur Mercyraḥmatinā
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahu
مِنَ(was) ofmina
ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَthe righteousl-ṣāliḥīna
76

وَنُوحًا إِذْ نَادَىٰ مِن قَبْلُ فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ فَنَجَّيْنَٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

And [mention] Noah, when he called [to Allāh]895 before [that time], so We responded to him and saved him and his family from the great affliction [i.e., the flood].

  1. [895] i.e., supplicated against his people who had persisted in denial and animosity. See 71:26-28.

وَنُوحًاAnd Nuhwanūḥan
إِذْwhenidh
نَادَىٰhe callednādā
مِنbeforemin
قَبْلُbeforeqablu
فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاso We respondedfa-is'tajabnā
لَهُۥto himlahu
فَنَجَّيْنَٰهُand We saved himfanajjaynāhu
وَأَهْلَهُۥand his familywa-ahlahu
مِنَfrommina
ٱلْكَرْبِthe afflictionl-karbi
ٱلْعَظِيمِ[the] greatl-ʿaẓīmi
77

وَنَصَرْنَٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمَ سَوْءٍۢ فَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

And We aided [i.e., saved] him from the people who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a people of evil, so We drowned them, all together.

وَنَصَرْنَٰهُAnd We helped himwanaṣarnāhu
مِنَfrommina
ٱلْقَوْمِthe peoplel-qawmi
ٱلَّذِينَwhoalladhīna
كَذَّبُوا۟deniedkadhabū
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآOur Signsbiāyātinā
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyinnahum
كَانُوا۟werekānū
قَوْمَa peopleqawma
سَوْءٍۢevilsawin
فَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُمْso We drowned themfa-aghraqnāhum
أَجْمَعِينَallajmaʿīna
78

وَدَاوُۥدَ وَسُلَيْمَٰنَ إِذْ يَحْكُمَانِ فِى ٱلْحَرْثِ إِذْ نَفَشَتْ فِيهِ غَنَمُ ٱلْقَوْمِ وَكُنَّا لِحُكْمِهِمْ شَٰهِدِينَ

And [mention] David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field - when the sheep of a people overran it [at night],896 and We were witness to their judgement.

  1. [896] Eating and destroying the crops.

وَدَاوُۥدَAnd Dawudwadāwūda
وَسُلَيْمَٰنَand Sulaimanwasulaymāna
إِذْwhenidh
يَحْكُمَانِthey judgedyaḥkumāni
فِىconcerning
ٱلْحَرْثِthe fieldl-ḥarthi
إِذْwhenidh
نَفَشَتْpasturednafashat
فِيهِin itfīhi
غَنَمُsheepghanamu
ٱلْقَوْمِ(of) a peoplel-qawmi
وَكُنَّاand We werewakunnā
لِحُكْمِهِمْto their judgmentliḥuk'mihim
شَٰهِدِينَwitnessshāhidīna
79

فَفَهَّمْنَٰهَا سُلَيْمَٰنَ ۚ وَكُلًّا ءَاتَيْنَا حُكْمًۭا وَعِلْمًۭا ۚ وَسَخَّرْنَا مَعَ دَاوُۥدَ ٱلْجِبَالَ يُسَبِّحْنَ وَٱلطَّيْرَ ۚ وَكُنَّا فَٰعِلِينَ

And We gave understanding of it [i.e., the case] to Solomon, and to each [of them] We gave judgement and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains to exalt [Us], along with David and [also] the birds. And We were doing [that].897

  1. [897] Meaning that Allāh has always been capable of accomplishing whatever He wills.

فَفَهَّمْنَٰهَاAnd We gave understanding of itfafahhamnāhā
سُلَيْمَٰنَ(to) Sulaimansulaymāna
وَكُلًّاand (to) eachwakullan
ءَاتَيْنَاWe gaveātaynā
حُكْمًۭاjudgmentḥuk'man
وَعِلْمًۭاand knowledgewaʿil'man
وَسَخَّرْنَاAnd We subjectedwasakharnā
مَعَwithmaʿa
دَاوُۥدَDawuddāwūda
ٱلْجِبَالَthe mountainsl-jibāla
يُسَبِّحْنَ(to) glorify Our praisesyusabbiḥ'na
وَٱلطَّيْرَand the birdswal-ṭayra
وَكُنَّاAnd We werewakunnā
فَٰعِلِينَthe Doersfāʿilīna
80

وَعَلَّمْنَٰهُ صَنْعَةَ لَبُوسٍۢ لَّكُمْ لِتُحْصِنَكُم مِّنۢ بَأْسِكُمْ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنتُمْ شَٰكِرُونَ

And We taught him the fashioning of coats of armor to protect you from your [enemy in] battle. So will you then be grateful?

وَعَلَّمْنَٰهُAnd We taught himwaʿallamnāhu
صَنْعَةَ(the) makingṣanʿata
لَبُوسٍۢ(of) coats of armorlabūsin
لَّكُمْfor youlakum
لِتُحْصِنَكُمto protect youlituḥ'ṣinakum
مِّنۢfrommin
بَأْسِكُمْyour battlebasikum
فَهَلْThen willfahal
أَنتُمْyouantum
شَٰكِرُونَ(be) gratefulshākirūna
81

وَلِسُلَيْمَٰنَ ٱلرِّيحَ عَاصِفَةًۭ تَجْرِى بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلَّتِى بَٰرَكْنَا فِيهَا ۚ وَكُنَّا بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَٰلِمِينَ

And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, blowing forcefully, proceeding by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And We are ever, of all things, Knowing.

وَلِسُلَيْمَٰنَAnd to Sulaimanwalisulaymāna
ٱلرِّيحَthe windl-rīḥa
عَاصِفَةًۭforcefullyʿāṣifatan
تَجْرِىblowingtajrī
بِأَمْرِهِۦٓby his commandbi-amrihi
إِلَىtoilā
ٱلْأَرْضِthe landl-arḍi
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
بَٰرَكْنَاWe blessedbāraknā
فِيهَا[in it]fīhā
وَكُنَّاAnd We arewakunnā
بِكُلِّof everybikulli
شَىْءٍthingshayin
عَٰلِمِينَKnowersʿālimīna
82

وَمِنَ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ مَن يَغُوصُونَ لَهُۥ وَيَعْمَلُونَ عَمَلًۭا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَكُنَّا لَهُمْ حَٰفِظِينَ

And of the devils [i.e., jinn] were those who dived for him and did work other than that. And We were of them a guardian.898

  1. [898] Preventing any disobedience or deviation by them from Solomon's instructions and protecting him from being harmed by them.

وَمِنَAnd ofwamina
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِthe devilsl-shayāṭīni
مَن(were some) whoman
يَغُوصُونَwould diveyaghūṣūna
لَهُۥfor himlahu
وَيَعْمَلُونَand would dowayaʿmalūna
عَمَلًۭاworkʿamalan
دُونَother thandūna
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
وَكُنَّاAnd We werewakunnā
لَهُمْof themlahum
حَٰفِظِينَGuardiansḥāfiẓīna
83

۞ وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful."

Word by Word
وَأَيُّوبَAnd Ayubwa-ayyūba
إِذْwhenidh
نَادَىٰhe callednādā
رَبَّهُۥٓ(to) his Lordrabbahu
أَنِّىIndeed, [I]annī
مَسَّنِىَhas touched memassaniya
ٱلضُّرُّthe adversityl-ḍuru
وَأَنتَand Youwa-anta
أَرْحَمُ(are) Most Mercifularḥamu
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ(of) the Mercifull-rāḥimīna
84

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِۦ مِن ضُرٍّۢ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ أَهْلَهُۥ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةًۭ مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْعَٰبِدِينَ

So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allāh].

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاSo We respondedfa-is'tajabnā
لَهُۥto himlahu
فَكَشَفْنَاand We removedfakashafnā
مَاwhat
بِهِۦ(was) on himbihi
مِنofmin
ضُرٍّۢ(the) adversityḍurrin
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُAnd We gave himwaātaynāhu
أَهْلَهُۥhis familyahlahu
وَمِثْلَهُمand (the) like thereofwamith'lahum
مَّعَهُمْwith themmaʿahum
رَحْمَةًۭ(as) Mercyraḥmatan
مِّنْfrom Ourselvesmin
عِندِنَاfrom Ourselvesʿindinā
وَذِكْرَىٰand a reminderwadhik'rā
لِلْعَٰبِدِينَfor the worshipperslil'ʿābidīna
85

وَإِسْمَٰعِيلَ وَإِدْرِيسَ وَذَا ٱلْكِفْلِ ۖ كُلٌّۭ مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ

And [mention] Ishmael and Idrees and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient.

وَإِسْمَٰعِيلَAnd Ishmaelwa-is'māʿīla
وَإِدْرِيسَand Idriswa-id'rīsa
وَذَاand Dhul-Kiflwadhā
ٱلْكِفْلِand Dhul-Kifll-kif'li
كُلٌّۭallkullun
مِّنَ(were) ofmina
ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَthe patient onesl-ṣābirīna
86

وَأَدْخَلْنَٰهُمْ فِى رَحْمَتِنَآ ۖ إِنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were of the righteous.

وَأَدْخَلْنَٰهُمْAnd We admitted themwa-adkhalnāhum
فِىin
رَحْمَتِنَآOur Mercyraḥmatinā
إِنَّهُمIndeed, theyinnahum
مِّنَ(were) ofmina
ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَthe righteousl-ṣāliḥīna
87

وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَٰضِبًۭا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

And [mention] the man of the fish [i.e., Jonah], when he went off in anger899 and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him.900 And he called out within the darknesses,901 "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

  1. [899] At the disbelief of his people.
  2. [900] Or "would not restrict him" in the belly of the fish.
  3. [901] That of the night, of the sea, and of the fish's interior.

وَذَاAnd Dhun-Nunwadhā
ٱلنُّونِAnd Dhun-Nunl-nūni
إِذwhenidh
ذَّهَبَhe wentdhahaba
مُغَٰضِبًۭا(while) angrymughāḍiban
فَظَنَّand thoughtfaẓanna
أَنthatan
لَّنneverlan
نَّقْدِرَWe would decreenaqdira
عَلَيْهِupon himʿalayhi
فَنَادَىٰThen he calledfanādā
فِىin
ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِthe darkness (es)l-ẓulumāti
أَنthatan
لَّآ(There is) no
إِلَٰهَgodilāha
إِلَّآexceptillā
أَنتَYouanta
سُبْحَٰنَكَGlory be to Yousub'ḥānaka
إِنِّىIndeed, [I]innī
كُنتُI amkuntu
مِنَofmina
ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna
88

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُۨجِى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاSo We respondedfa-is'tajabnā
لَهُۥto himlahu
وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُand We saved himwanajjaynāhu
مِنَfrommina
ٱلْغَمِّthe distressl-ghami
وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thuswakadhālika
نُۨجِىWe savenunjī
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersl-mu'minīna
89

وَزَكَرِيَّآ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِى فَرْدًۭا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ

And [mention] Zechariah, when he called to his Lord, "My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while You are the best of inheritors."

وَزَكَرِيَّآAnd Zakariyawazakariyyā
إِذْwhenidh
نَادَىٰhe callednādā
رَبَّهُۥ(to) his Lordrabbahu
رَبِّMy Lordrabbi
لَا(Do) not
تَذَرْنِىleave metadharnī
فَرْدًۭاalonefardan
وَأَنتَwhile Youwa-anta
خَيْرُ(are) [the] Bestkhayru
ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ(of) the inheritorsl-wārithīna
90

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥ يَحْيَىٰ وَأَصْلَحْنَا لَهُۥ زَوْجَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يُسَٰرِعُونَ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًۭا وَرَهَبًۭا ۖ وَكَانُوا۟ لَنَا خَٰشِعِينَ

So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate902 Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.

  1. [902] i.e., worship.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَاSo We respondedfa-is'tajabnā
لَهُۥto himlahu
وَوَهَبْنَاand We bestowedwawahabnā
لَهُۥon himlahu
يَحْيَىٰYahyayaḥyā
وَأَصْلَحْنَاand We curedwa-aṣlaḥnā
لَهُۥfor himlahu
زَوْجَهُۥٓhis wifezawjahu
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyinnahum
كَانُوا۟used (to)kānū
يُسَٰرِعُونَhastenyusāriʿūna
فِىin
ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِgood deedsl-khayrāti
وَيَدْعُونَنَاand they supplicate to Uswayadʿūnanā
رَغَبًۭا(in) hoperaghaban
وَرَهَبًۭاand fearwarahaban
وَكَانُوا۟and they werewakānū
لَنَاto Uslanā
خَٰشِعِينَhumbly submissivekhāshiʿīna
91

وَٱلَّتِىٓ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهَا مِن رُّوحِنَا وَجَعَلْنَٰهَا وَٱبْنَهَآ ءَايَةًۭ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ

And [mention] the one who guarded her chastity [i.e., Mary], so We blew into her [garment] through Our angel [i.e., Gabriel], and We made her and her son a sign for the worlds.

وَٱلَّتِىٓAnd she whowa-allatī
أَحْصَنَتْguardedaḥṣanat
فَرْجَهَاher chastityfarjahā
فَنَفَخْنَاso We breathedfanafakhnā
فِيهَاinto herfīhā
مِنofmin
رُّوحِنَاOur Spiritrūḥinā
وَجَعَلْنَٰهَاand We made herwajaʿalnāhā
وَٱبْنَهَآand her sonwa-ib'nahā
ءَايَةًۭa signāyatan
لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَfor the worldslil'ʿālamīna
92

إِنَّ هَٰذِهِۦٓ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ وَأَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمْ فَٱعْبُدُونِ

Indeed this, your religion, is one religion,903 and I am your Lord, so worship Me.

  1. [903] i.e., a collective way of life or course of conduct followed by a community.

إِنَّIndeedinna
هَٰذِهِۦٓthishādhihi
أُمَّتُكُمْ(is) your religionummatukum
أُمَّةًۭreligionummatan
وَٰحِدَةًۭonewāḥidatan
وَأَنَا۠and I Amwa-anā
رَبُّكُمْyour Lordrabbukum
فَٱعْبُدُونِso worship Mefa-uʿ'budūni
93

وَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُم بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلٌّ إِلَيْنَا رَٰجِعُونَ

And [yet] they divided their affair [i.e., that of their religion] among themselves,904 [but] all to Us will return.

  1. [904] Becoming sects and denominations.

Word by Word
وَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟But they cut offwataqaṭṭaʿū
أَمْرَهُمtheir affairamrahum
بَيْنَهُمْamong themselvesbaynahum
كُلٌّallkullun
إِلَيْنَاto Usilaynā
رَٰجِعُونَ(will) returnrājiʿūna
94

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌۭ فَلَا كُفْرَانَ لِسَعْيِهِۦ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ كَٰتِبُونَ

So whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer - no denial will there be for his effort,905 and indeed We [i.e., Our angels], of it, are recorders.

  1. [905] Such a person will not be deprived of his due reward.

Word by Word
فَمَنThen whoeverfaman
يَعْمَلْdoesyaʿmal
مِنَ[of]mina
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ[the] righteous deedsl-ṣāliḥāti
وَهُوَwhile hewahuwa
مُؤْمِنٌۭ(is) a believermu'minun
فَلَاthen notfalā
كُفْرَانَ(will be) rejectedkuf'rāna
لِسَعْيِهِۦ[of] his effortlisaʿyihi
وَإِنَّاAnd indeed, Wewa-innā
لَهُۥof itlahu
كَٰتِبُونَ(are) Recorderskātibūna
95

وَحَرَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَٰهَآ أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ

And it is prohibited to [the people of] a city which We have destroyed that they will [ever] return906

  1. [906] They cannot return to this world, nor can they repent to Allāh.

وَحَرَٰمٌAnd (there is) prohibitionwaḥarāmun
عَلَىٰuponʿalā
قَرْيَةٍa cityqaryatin
أَهْلَكْنَٰهَآwhich We have destroyedahlaknāhā
أَنَّهُمْthat theyannahum
لَاnot
يَرْجِعُونَwill returnyarjiʿūna
96

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فُتِحَتْ يَأْجُوجُ وَمَأْجُوجُ وَهُم مِّن كُلِّ حَدَبٍۢ يَنسِلُونَ

Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend

حَتَّىٰٓUntilḥattā
إِذَاwhenidhā
فُتِحَتْhas been openedfutiḥat
يَأْجُوجُ(for) the Yajujyajūju
وَمَأْجُوجُand Majujwamajūju
وَهُمand theywahum
مِّنfrommin
كُلِّeverykulli
حَدَبٍۢelevationḥadabin
يَنسِلُونَdescendyansilūna
97

وَٱقْتَرَبَ ٱلْوَعْدُ ٱلْحَقُّ فَإِذَا هِىَ شَٰخِصَةٌ أَبْصَٰرُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يَٰوَيْلَنَا قَدْ كُنَّا فِى غَفْلَةٍۢ مِّنْ هَٰذَا بَلْ كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

And [when] the true promise [i.e., the resurrection] has approached; then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will be staring [in horror, while they say], "O woe to us; we had been unmindful of this; rather, we were wrongdoers."

وَٱقْتَرَبَAnd has approachedwa-iq'taraba
ٱلْوَعْدُthe promisel-waʿdu
ٱلْحَقُّ[the] truel-ḥaqu
فَإِذَاthen beholdfa-idhā
هِىَ[it]hiya
شَٰخِصَةٌ(are) staringshākhiṣatun
أَبْصَٰرُ(the) eyesabṣāru
ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīna
كَفَرُوا۟disbelievedkafarū
يَٰوَيْلَنَاO woe to usyāwaylanā
قَدْVerilyqad
كُنَّاwe had beenkunnā
فِىin
غَفْلَةٍۢheedlessnessghaflatin
مِّنْofmin
هَٰذَاthishādhā
بَلْnaybal
كُنَّاwe werekunnā
ظَٰلِمِينَwrongdoersẓālimīna
98

إِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ أَنتُمْ لَهَا وَٰرِدُونَ

Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allāh are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it.

إِنَّكُمْIndeed, youinnakum
وَمَاand whatwamā
تَعْبُدُونَyou worshiptaʿbudūna
مِنbesides Allahmin
دُونِbesides Allahdūni
ٱللَّهِbesides Allahl-lahi
حَصَبُ(are) firewoodḥaṣabu
جَهَنَّمَ(of) Helljahannama
أَنتُمْYouantum
لَهَاto itlahā
وَٰرِدُونَwill comewāridūna
99

لَوْ كَانَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ءَالِهَةًۭ مَّا وَرَدُوهَا ۖ وَكُلٌّۭ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

Had these [false deities] been [actual] gods, they would not have come to it, but all are eternal therein.

ءَالِهَةًۭgodsālihatan
مَّاnot
وَرَدُوهَاthey (would) have come to itwaradūhā
وَكُلٌّۭAnd allwakullun
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
خَٰلِدُونَwill abide foreverkhālidūna
100

لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌۭ وَهُمْ فِيهَا لَا يَسْمَعُونَ

For them therein is heavy sighing, and they therein will not hear.
