Surah Yusuf Verses 101–111

101

۞ رَبِّ قَدْ ءَاتَيْتَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِى مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِىِّۦ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِى مُسْلِمًۭا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous."

ءَاتَيْتَنِىyou have given meātaytanī
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُلْكِthe sovereigntyl-mul'ki
وَعَلَّمْتَنِىand taught mewaʿallamtanī
مِنofmin
تَأْوِيلِthe interpretationtawīli
ٱلْأَحَادِيثِof the eventsl-aḥādīthi
فَاطِرَCreatorfāṭira
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
أَنتَYouanta
وَلِىِّۦ(are) my Protectorwaliyyī
فِىin
ٱلدُّنْيَاthe worldl-dun'yā
وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِand the Hereafterwal-ākhirati
تَوَفَّنِىCause me to dietawaffanī
مُسْلِمًۭا(as) a Muslimmus'liman
وَأَلْحِقْنِىand join mewa-alḥiq'nī
بِٱلصَّٰلِحِينَwith the righteousbil-ṣāliḥīna
102

ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ أَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُونَ

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muḥammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.

ذَٰلِكَThatdhālika
مِنْ(is) frommin
أَنۢبَآءِthe newsanbāi
ٱلْغَيْبِ(of) the unseenl-ghaybi
نُوحِيهِwhich We revealnūḥīhi
إِلَيْكَto youilayka
وَمَاAnd notwamā
كُنتَyou werekunta
لَدَيْهِمْwith themladayhim
إِذْwhenidh
أَجْمَعُوٓا۟they put togetherajmaʿū
أَمْرَهُمْtheir planamrahum
وَهُمْwhile theywahum
يَمْكُرُونَ(were) plottingyamkurūna
103

وَمَآ أَكْثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.

وَمَآAnd notwamā
أَكْثَرُmostaktharu
ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the mankindl-nāsi
وَلَوْeven thoughwalaw
حَرَصْتَyou desireḥaraṣta
بِمُؤْمِنِينَ(will be) believersbimu'minīna
104

وَمَا تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۚ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ

And you do not ask of them for it any payment. It is not except a reminder to the worlds.

عَلَيْهِfor itʿalayhi

أَجْرٍrewardajrin
إِنْNotin
هُوَ(is) ithuwa
إِلَّاbutillā
ذِكْرٌۭa reminderdhik'run
لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَto the worldslil'ʿālamīna
105

وَكَأَيِّن مِّنْ ءَايَةٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ يَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهَا وَهُمْ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضُونَ

And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away.

وَكَأَيِّنAnd how manywaka-ayyin
مِّنْofmin
ءَايَةٍۢa Signāyatin
فِىin
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
يَمُرُّونَthey passyamurrūna
عَلَيْهَاover itʿalayhā
وَهُمْwhile theywahum
عَنْهَا(are) from themʿanhā
مُعْرِضُونَthe ones who turn awaymuʿ'riḍūna
106

وَمَا يُؤْمِنُ أَكْثَرُهُم بِٱللَّهِ إِلَّا وَهُم مُّشْرِكُونَ

And most of them believe not in Allāh except while they associate others with Him.

يُؤْمِنُbelieveyu'minu
أَكْثَرُهُمmost of themaktharuhum
بِٱللَّهِin Allahbil-lahi
إِلَّاexceptillā
وَهُمwhile theywahum
مُّشْرِكُونَassociate partners with Himmush'rikūna
107

أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ غَٰشِيَةٌۭ مِّنْ عَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allāh or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive?

أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟Do they then feel secureafa-aminū
أَن(against) thatan
تَأْتِيَهُمْcomes to themtatiyahum
غَٰشِيَةٌۭan overwhelmingghāshiyatun
مِّنْ[of]min
عَذَابِpunishmentʿadhābi
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
أَوْoraw
تَأْتِيَهُمُcomes to themtatiyahumu
ٱلسَّاعَةُthe Hourl-sāʿatu
بَغْتَةًۭsuddenlybaghtatan
وَهُمْwhile theywahum
لَا(do) not
يَشْعُرُونَperceiveyashʿurūna
108

قُلْ هَٰذِهِۦ سَبِيلِىٓ أَدْعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِى ۖ وَسُبْحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allāh with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allāh; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."

سَبِيلِىٓ(is) my waysabīlī
أَدْعُوٓا۟I inviteadʿū
إِلَىtoilā
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
عَلَىٰwithʿalā
بَصِيرَةٍinsightbaṣīratin
أَنَا۠Ianā
وَمَنِand whoeverwamani
ٱتَّبَعَنِىfollows meittabaʿanī
وَسُبْحَٰنَAnd Glory bewasub'ḥāna
ٱللَّهِ(to) Allahl-lahi
وَمَآand notwamā
أَنَا۠I amanā
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَthe polytheistsl-mush'rikīna
109

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًۭا نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِم مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ۗ أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۗ وَلَدَارُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they620 not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh; then will you not reason?

  1. [620] Those who deny Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ).

قَبْلِكَbefore youqablika
إِلَّاbutillā
رِجَالًۭاmenrijālan
نُّوحِىٓWe revealednūḥī
إِلَيْهِمto themilayhim
مِّنْfrom (among)min
أَهْلِ(the) peopleahli
ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ(of) the townshipsl-qurā
أَفَلَمْSo have notafalam
يَسِيرُوا۟they traveledyasīrū
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
فَيَنظُرُوا۟and seenfayanẓurū
كَيْفَhowkayfa
كَانَwaskāna
عَٰقِبَةُ(the) endʿāqibatu
ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those whoalladhīna
مِن(were) before themmin
قَبْلِهِمْ(were) before themqablihim
وَلَدَارُAnd surely the homewaladāru
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterl-ākhirati
خَيْرٌۭ(is) bestkhayrun
لِّلَّذِينَfor those wholilladhīna
ٱتَّقَوْا۟fear Allahittaqaw
أَفَلَاThen will notafalā
تَعْقِلُونَyou use reasontaʿqilūna
110

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسَ ٱلرُّسُلُ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ كُذِبُوا۟ جَآءَهُمْ نَصْرُنَا فَنُجِّىَ مَن نَّشَآءُ ۖ وَلَا يُرَدُّ بَأْسُنَا عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.

ٱسْتَيْـَٔسَgave up hopeis'tayasa
ٱلرُّسُلُthe Messengersl-rusulu
وَظَنُّوٓا۟and thoughtwaẓannū
أَنَّهُمْthat theyannahum
قَدْcertainlyqad
كُذِبُوا۟were deniedkudhibū
جَآءَهُمْthen came to themjāahum
نَصْرُنَاOur helpnaṣrunā
فَنُجِّىَand was savedfanujjiya
مَنwhomman
نَّشَآءُWe willednashāu
وَلَاAnd notwalā
يُرَدُّ(can) be repelledyuraddu
بَأْسُنَاOur punishmentbasunā
عَنِfromʿani
ٱلْقَوْمِthe peoplel-qawmi
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ(who are) criminalsl-muj'rimīna
111

لَقَدْ كَانَ فِى قَصَصِهِمْ عِبْرَةٌۭ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ ۗ مَا كَانَ حَدِيثًۭا يُفْتَرَىٰ وَلَٰكِن تَصْدِيقَ ٱلَّذِى بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَفْصِيلَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ وَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ

There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

ٱلَّذِى(of that) whichalladhī
بَيْنَ(was) before itbayna
يَدَيْهِ(was) before ityadayhi
وَتَفْصِيلَand a detailed explanationwatafṣīla
كُلِّ(of) allkulli
شَىْءٍۢthingsshayin
وَهُدًۭىand a guidancewahudan
وَرَحْمَةًۭand mercywaraḥmatan
لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a peopleliqawmin
يُؤْمِنُونَwho believeyu'minūna
