Surah Maryam Verses 51–98

51

وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مُوسَىٰٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مُخْلَصًۭا وَكَانَ رَسُولًۭا نَّبِيًّۭا

And mention in the Book, Moses. Indeed, he was chosen, and he was a messenger and a prophet.817

  1. [817] A messenger (rasūl) is one who was charged by Allāh to reform society. A prophet (nabī) is one who received revelation from Allāh, the latter being more numerous than the former.

إِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahu

وَكَانَand waswakāna
رَسُولًۭاa Messengerrasūlan
نَّبِيًّۭاa Prophetnabiyyan
52

وَنَٰدَيْنَٰهُ مِن جَانِبِ ٱلطُّورِ ٱلْأَيْمَنِ وَقَرَّبْنَٰهُ نَجِيًّۭا

And We called him from the side of the mount818 at [his] right and brought him near, confiding [to him].

  1. [818] Mount Sinai.

وَنَٰدَيْنَٰهُAnd We called himwanādaynāhu
مِنfrommin
جَانِبِ(the) sidejānibi
ٱلطُّورِ(of) the Mountl-ṭūri
ٱلْأَيْمَنِthe rightl-aymani
وَقَرَّبْنَٰهُand brought him nearwaqarrabnāhu
نَجِيًّۭا(for) conversationnajiyyan
53

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥ مِن رَّحْمَتِنَآ أَخَاهُ هَٰرُونَ نَبِيًّۭا

And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron as a prophet.

وَوَهَبْنَاAnd We bestowedwawahabnā
لَهُۥ[to] himlahu
مِنfrommin
رَّحْمَتِنَآOur Mercyraḥmatinā
أَخَاهُhis brotherakhāhu
هَٰرُونَHarunhārūna
نَبِيًّۭاa Prophetnabiyyan
54

وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ إِسْمَٰعِيلَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صَادِقَ ٱلْوَعْدِ وَكَانَ رَسُولًۭا نَّبِيًّۭا

And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.

ٱلْوَعْدِ(to his) promisel-waʿdi
وَكَانَand waswakāna
رَسُولًۭاa Messengerrasūlan
نَّبِيًّۭاa Prophetnabiyyan
55

وَكَانَ يَأْمُرُ أَهْلَهُۥ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ وَكَانَ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦ مَرْضِيًّۭا

And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakāh and was to his Lord pleasing [i.e., accepted by Him].

يَأْمُرُ(to) enjoinyamuru
أَهْلَهُۥ(on) his peopleahlahu
بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِthe prayerbil-ṣalati
وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِand zakahwal-zakati
وَكَانَand waswakāna
عِندَnearʿinda
رَبِّهِۦhis Lordrabbihi
مَرْضِيًّۭاpleasingmarḍiyyan
56

وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ إِدْرِيسَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّيقًۭا نَّبِيًّۭا

And mention in the Book, Idrees. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.

57

وَرَفَعْنَٰهُ مَكَانًا عَلِيًّا

And We raised him to a high station.

وَرَفَعْنَٰهُAnd We raised himwarafaʿnāhu
مَكَانًا(to) a positionmakānan
عَلِيًّاhighʿaliyyan
58

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّۦنَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ ءَادَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍۢ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَٱجْتَبَيْنَآ ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ خَرُّوا۟ سُجَّدًۭا وَبُكِيًّۭا ۩

Those were the ones upon whom Allāh bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel [i.e., Jacob], and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.

ذُرِّيَّةِ(the) offspringdhurriyyati
ءَادَمَ(of) Adamādama
وَمِمَّنْand of thosewamimman
حَمَلْنَاWe carriedḥamalnā
مَعَwithmaʿa
نُوحٍۢNuhnūḥin
وَمِنand ofwamin
ذُرِّيَّةِ(the) offspringdhurriyyati
إِبْرَٰهِيمَ(of) Ibrahimib'rāhīma
وَإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَand Israelwa-is'rāīla
وَمِمَّنْand of (those) whomwamimman
هَدَيْنَاWe guidedhadaynā
وَٱجْتَبَيْنَآand We chosewa-ij'tabaynā
إِذَاWhenidhā
تُتْلَىٰwere recitedtut'lā
عَلَيْهِمْto themʿalayhim
ءَايَٰتُ(the) Versesāyātu
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ(of) the Most Graciousl-raḥmāni
خَرُّوا۟they fellkharrū
سُجَّدًۭاprostratingsujjadan
وَبُكِيًّۭاand weepingwabukiyyan
59

۞ فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ أَضَاعُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَلْقَوْنَ غَيًّا

But there came after them successors [i.e., later generations] who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil819 -

  1. [819] Described as a valley in Hell or may be rendered "the consequence of error."

خَلْفٌsuccessorskhalfun
أَضَاعُوا۟who neglectedaḍāʿū
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayerl-ṣalata
وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟and they followedwa-ittabaʿū
ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِthe lustsl-shahawāti
فَسَوْفَso soonfasawfa
يَلْقَوْنَthey will meetyalqawna
غَيًّاevilghayyan
60

إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَٰلِحًۭا فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ شَيْـًۭٔا

Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all.

وَعَمِلَand didwaʿamila
صَٰلِحًۭاgood (deeds)ṣāliḥan
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَThen thosefa-ulāika
يَدْخُلُونَwill enteryadkhulūna
ٱلْجَنَّةَParadisel-janata
وَلَاand notwalā
يُظْلَمُونَthey will be wrongedyuẓ'lamūna
شَيْـًۭٔا(in) anythingshayan
61

جَنَّٰتِ عَدْنٍ ٱلَّتِى وَعَدَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ عِبَادَهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ وَعْدُهُۥ مَأْتِيًّۭا

[Therein are] gardens of perpetual residence which the Most Merciful has promised His servants in the unseen. Indeed, His promise has ever been eminent.820

  1. [820] Literally, "that to which all will come."

جَنَّٰتِGardensjannāti
عَدْنٍ(of) Edenʿadnin
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
وَعَدَpromisedwaʿada
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُthe Most Graciousl-raḥmānu
عِبَادَهُۥ(to) His slavesʿibādahu
بِٱلْغَيْبِin the unseenbil-ghaybi
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, [it]innahu
كَانَiskāna
وَعْدُهُۥHis promisewaʿduhu
مَأْتِيًّۭاsure to comematiyyan
62

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا إِلَّا سَلَٰمًۭا ۖ وَلَهُمْ رِزْقُهُمْ فِيهَا بُكْرَةًۭ وَعَشِيًّۭا

They will not hear therein any ill speech - only [greetings of] peace - and they will have their provision therein, morning and afternoon.

إِلَّاbutillā
سَلَٰمًۭاpeacesalāman
وَلَهُمْAnd for themwalahum
رِزْقُهُمْ(is) their provisionriz'quhum
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
بُكْرَةًۭmorningbuk'ratan
وَعَشِيًّۭاand eveningwaʿashiyyan
63

تِلْكَ ٱلْجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِى نُورِثُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا مَن كَانَ تَقِيًّۭا

That is Paradise, which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were fearing of Allāh.

ٱلْجَنَّةُ(is) Paradisel-janatu
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
نُورِثُWe give (as) inheritancenūrithu
مِنْ[of] (to)min
عِبَادِنَاOur slavesʿibādinā
مَن(the one) whoman
كَانَiskāna
تَقِيًّۭاrighteoustaqiyyan
64

وَمَا نَتَنَزَّلُ إِلَّا بِأَمْرِ رَبِّكَ ۖ لَهُۥ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا وَمَا خَلْفَنَا وَمَا بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ نَسِيًّۭا

[Gabriel said],821 "And we [angels] descend not except by the order of your Lord. To Him belongs that before us and that behind us and what is in between. And never is your Lord forgetful -

  1. [821] In answer to the Prophet's wish that Gabriel would visit him more often.

بِأَمْرِby (the) Commandbi-amri
رَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbika
لَهُۥTo Him (belongs)lahu

بَيْنَ(is) before usbayna
أَيْدِينَا(is) before usaydīnā
وَمَاand whatwamā
خَلْفَنَا(is) behind uskhalfanā
وَمَاand whatwamā
بَيْنَ(is) betweenbayna
ذَٰلِكَthatdhālika
وَمَاAnd notwamā
كَانَiskāna
رَبُّكَyour Lordrabbuka
نَسِيًّۭاforgetfulnasiyyan
65

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَٱعْبُدْهُ وَٱصْطَبِرْ لِعِبَٰدَتِهِۦ ۚ هَلْ تَعْلَمُ لَهُۥ سَمِيًّۭا

Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"

رَّبُّLordrabbu
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
وَمَاand whateverwamā
بَيْنَهُمَا(is) between both of thembaynahumā
فَٱعْبُدْهُso worship Himfa-uʿ'bud'hu
وَٱصْطَبِرْand be constantwa-iṣ'ṭabir
لِعِبَٰدَتِهِۦin His worshipliʿibādatihi
هَلْDohal
تَعْلَمُyou knowtaʿlamu
لَهُۥfor Himlahu
سَمِيًّۭاany similaritysamiyyan
66

وَيَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَءِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا

And man [i.e., the disbeliever] says, "When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?"

ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ[the] manl-insānu
أَءِذَاWhat! Whena-idhā
مَاWhat! When
مِتُّI am deadmittu
لَسَوْفَsurely willlasawfa
أُخْرَجُI be brought forthukh'raju
حَيًّاaliveḥayyan
67

أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْـًۭٔا

Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?

أَوَلَاDoes notawalā
يَذْكُرُrememberyadhkuru
ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ[the] manl-insānu
أَنَّاthat Weannā
خَلَقْنَٰهُWe created himkhalaqnāhu
مِنbeforemin
قَبْلُbeforeqablu
وَلَمْwhile notwalam
يَكُhe wasyaku
شَيْـًۭٔاanythingshayan
68

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ ثُمَّ لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْ حَوْلَ جَهَنَّمَ جِثِيًّۭا

So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.822

  1. [822] i.e., fallen on their knees from terror or dragged there unwillingly on their knees.

فَوَرَبِّكَSo by your Lordfawarabbika
لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْsurely, We will gather themlanaḥshurannahum
وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَand the devilswal-shayāṭīna
ثُمَّthenthumma
لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْsurely, We will bring themlanuḥ'ḍirannahum
حَوْلَaroundḥawla
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannama
جِثِيًّۭاbent (on) kneesjithiyyan
69

ثُمَّ لَنَنزِعَنَّ مِن كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّهُمْ أَشَدُّ عَلَى ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عِتِيًّۭا

Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.

لَنَنزِعَنَّsurely, We will drag outlananziʿanna
مِنfrommin
كُلِّeverykulli
شِيعَةٍsectshīʿatin
أَيُّهُمْthose of themayyuhum
أَشَدُّ(who were) worstashaddu
عَلَىagainstʿalā
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāni
عِتِيًّۭا(in) rebellionʿitiyyan
70

ثُمَّ لَنَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِهَا صِلِيًّۭا

Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein.

لَنَحْنُsurely, Welanaḥnu
أَعْلَمُknow bestaʿlamu
بِٱلَّذِينَ[of] those whobi-alladhīna
هُمْ[they]hum
أَوْلَىٰ(are) most worthyawlā
بِهَاthereinbihā
صِلِيًّۭا(of) being burntṣiliyyan
71

وَإِن مِّنكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا ۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ حَتْمًۭا مَّقْضِيًّۭا

And there is none of you except he will come to it.823 This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.

  1. [823] i.e., be exposed to it. However, the people of Paradise will not be harmed thereby.

وَإِنAnd (there is) notwa-in
مِّنكُمْ(any) of youminkum
إِلَّاbutillā
وَارِدُهَا(will be) passing over itwāriduhā
كَانَ(This) iskāna
عَلَىٰuponʿalā
رَبِّكَyour Lordrabbika
حَتْمًۭاan inevitabilityḥatman
مَّقْضِيًّۭاdecreedmaqḍiyyan
72

ثُمَّ نُنَجِّى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّنَذَرُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّۭا

Then We will save those who feared Allāh and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.

نُنَجِّىWe will delivernunajjī
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
ٱتَّقَوا۟feared (Allah)ittaqaw
وَّنَذَرُand We will leavewanadharu
ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoersl-ẓālimīna
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
جِثِيًّۭاbent (on) kneesjithiyyan
73

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُنَا بَيِّنَٰتٍۢ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَىُّ ٱلْفَرِيقَيْنِ خَيْرٌۭ مَّقَامًۭا وَأَحْسَنُ نَدِيًّۭا

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?"824

  1. [824] In regard to worldly interests.

ءَايَٰتُنَاOur Versesāyātunā
بَيِّنَٰتٍۢclearbayyinātin
قَالَsayqāla
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
كَفَرُوا۟disbelievedkafarū
لِلَّذِينَto those wholilladhīna
ءَامَنُوٓا۟believedāmanū
أَىُّWhichayyu
ٱلْفَرِيقَيْنِ(of) the two groupsl-farīqayni
خَيْرٌۭ(is) betterkhayrun
مَّقَامًۭا(in) positionmaqāman
وَأَحْسَنُand bestwa-aḥsanu
نَدِيًّۭا(in) assemblynadiyyan
74

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَحْسَنُ أَثَٰثًۭا وَرِءْيًۭا

And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance?

وَكَمْAnd how manywakam
أَهْلَكْنَاWe destroyedahlaknā
قَبْلَهُمbefore themqablahum
مِّنofmin
قَرْنٍa generationqarnin
هُمْtheyhum
أَحْسَنُ(were) betteraḥsanu
أَثَٰثًۭا(in) possessionsathāthan
وَرِءْيًۭاand appearancewari'yan
75

قُلْ مَن كَانَ فِى ٱلضَّلَٰلَةِ فَلْيَمْدُدْ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ مَدًّا ۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ إِمَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ وَإِمَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ هُوَ شَرٌّۭ مَّكَانًۭا وَأَضْعَفُ جُندًۭا

Say, "Whoever is in error - let the Most Merciful extend for him an extension [in wealth and time] until, when they see that which they were promised - either punishment [in this world] or the Hour [of resurrection] - they will come to know who is worst in position and weaker in soldiers."

فَلْيَمْدُدْthen surely will extendfalyamdud

ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُthe Most Graciousl-raḥmānu
مَدًّاan extensionmaddan
حَتَّىٰٓuntilḥattā
إِذَاwhenidhā
رَأَوْا۟they seera-aw
مَاwhat
يُوعَدُونَthey were promisedyūʿadūna
إِمَّاeitherimmā
ٱلْعَذَابَthe punishmentl-ʿadhāba
وَإِمَّاorwa-immā
ٱلسَّاعَةَthe Hourl-sāʿata
فَسَيَعْلَمُونَthen they will knowfasayaʿlamūna
مَنْwhoman
هُوَ[he]huwa
شَرٌّۭ(is) worstsharrun
مَّكَانًۭا(in) positionmakānan
وَأَضْعَفُand weakerwa-aḍʿafu
جُندًۭا(in) forcesjundan
76

وَيَزِيدُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱهْتَدَوْا۟ هُدًۭى ۗ وَٱلْبَٰقِيَٰتُ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًۭا وَخَيْرٌۭ مَّرَدًّا

And Allāh increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord825 for reward and better for recourse.

  1. [825] i.e., in the sight or evaluation of Allāh.

ٱللَّهُAnd Allah increasesl-lahu
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
ٱهْتَدَوْا۟accept guidanceih'tadaw
هُدًۭى(in) guidancehudan
وَٱلْبَٰقِيَٰتُAnd the everlastingwal-bāqiyātu
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُgood deedsl-ṣāliḥātu
خَيْرٌ(are) betterkhayrun
عِندَnearʿinda
رَبِّكَyour Lordrabbika
ثَوَابًۭا(for) rewardthawāban
وَخَيْرٌۭand betterwakhayrun
مَّرَدًّا(for) returnmaraddan
77

أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى كَفَرَ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَقَالَ لَأُوتَيَنَّ مَالًۭا وَوَلَدًا

Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children [in the next life]"?

لَأُوتَيَنَّSurely, I will be givenlaūtayanna

وَوَلَدًاand childrenwawaladan
78

أَطَّلَعَ ٱلْغَيْبَ أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَهْدًۭا

Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?

ٱلْغَيْبَ(into) the unseenl-ghayba
أَمِorami
ٱتَّخَذَhas he takenittakhadha
عِندَfromʿinda
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāni
عَهْدًۭاa promiseʿahdan
79

كَلَّا ۚ سَنَكْتُبُ مَا يَقُولُ وَنَمُدُّ لَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ مَدًّۭا

No! We will record what he says and extend [i.e., increase] for him from the punishment extensively.

وَنَمُدُّand We will extendwanamuddu
لَهُۥfor himlahu

80

وَنَرِثُهُۥ مَا يَقُولُ وَيَأْتِينَا فَرْدًۭا

And We will inherit him [in] what he mentions,826 and he will come to Us alone.

  1. [826] Instead of giving him wealth and children in the Hereafter, Allāh will take from him those he had in worldly life at the time of his death.

وَيَأْتِينَاand he will come to Uswayatīnā
فَرْدًۭاalonefardan
81

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةًۭ لِّيَكُونُوا۟ لَهُمْ عِزًّۭا

And they have taken besides Allāh [false] deities that they would be for them [a source of] honor.

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟And they have takenwa-ittakhadhū
مِنbesides Allahmin
دُونِbesides Allahdūni
ٱللَّهِbesides Allahl-lahi
ءَالِهَةًۭgodsālihatan
لِّيَكُونُوا۟that they may beliyakūnū
لَهُمْfor themlahum
عِزًّۭاan honorʿizzan
82

كَلَّا ۚ سَيَكْفُرُونَ بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ وَيَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضِدًّا

No! They [i.e., those "gods"] will deny their worship of them and will be against them opponents [on the Day of Judgement].

83

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ تَؤُزُّهُمْ أَزًّۭا

Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them [to evil] with [constant] incitement?

أَرْسَلْنَا[We] have sentarsalnā
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَthe devilsl-shayāṭīna
عَلَىuponʿalā
ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَthe disbelieversl-kāfirīna
تَؤُزُّهُمْinciting themta-uzzuhum
أَزًّۭا(with) incitementazzan
84

فَلَا تَعْجَلْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا نَعُدُّ لَهُمْ عَدًّۭا

So be not impatient over them. We only count out [i.e., allow] to them a [limited] number.827

  1. [827] Of breaths, of days, or of evil deeds.

85

يَوْمَ نَحْشُرُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ إِلَى ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ وَفْدًۭا

On the Day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation

يَوْمَ(The) Dayyawma
نَحْشُرُWe will gathernaḥshuru
ٱلْمُتَّقِينَthe righteousl-mutaqīna
إِلَىtoilā
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāni
وَفْدًۭا(as) a delegationwafdan
86

وَنَسُوقُ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ وِرْدًۭا

And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst

وَنَسُوقُAnd We will drivewanasūqu
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَthe criminalsl-muj'rimīna
إِلَىٰtoilā
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannama
وِرْدًۭاthirstywir'dan
87

لَّا يَمْلِكُونَ ٱلشَّفَٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَهْدًۭا

None will have [power of] intercession except he who had taken from the Most Merciful a covenant.828

  1. [828] Not to worship other than Him.

يَمْلِكُونَthey will have the poweryamlikūna
ٱلشَّفَٰعَةَ(of) the intercessionl-shafāʿata
إِلَّاexceptillā
مَنِ(he) whomani
ٱتَّخَذَhas takenittakhadha

ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Graciousl-raḥmāni
عَهْدًۭاa covenantʿahdan
88

وَقَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وَلَدًۭا

And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son."

وَقَالُوا۟And they saywaqālū
ٱتَّخَذَHas takenittakhadha
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُthe Most Graciousl-raḥmānu
وَلَدًۭاa sonwaladan
89

لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِدًّۭا

You have done an atrocious thing.

تَكَادُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ يَتَفَطَّرْنَ مِنْهُ وَتَنشَقُّ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَتَخِرُّ ٱلْجِبَالُ هَدًّا

The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُthe heavensl-samāwātu
يَتَفَطَّرْنَget tornyatafaṭṭarna
مِنْهُtherefrommin'hu
وَتَنشَقُّand splits asunderwatanshaqqu
ٱلْأَرْضُthe earthl-arḍu
وَتَخِرُّand collapsewatakhirru
ٱلْجِبَالُthe mountainl-jibālu
هَدًّا(in) devastationhaddan
91

أَن دَعَوْا۟ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ وَلَدًۭا

That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son.

لِلرَّحْمَٰنِto the Most Graciouslilrraḥmāni
وَلَدًۭاa sonwaladan
92

وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا

And it is not appropriate for the Most Merciful that He should take a son.

لِلرَّحْمَٰنِfor the Most Graciouslilrraḥmāni

يَتَّخِذَHe should takeyattakhidha

93

إِن كُلُّ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّآ ءَاتِى ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَبْدًۭا

There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant.

94

لَّقَدْ أَحْصَىٰهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّۭا

He has enumerated them and counted them a [full] counting.

وَعَدَّهُمْand counted themwaʿaddahum

95

وَكُلُّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ فَرْدًا

And all of them are coming to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone.

ءَاتِيهِ(will) come (to) Himātīhi
يَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawma
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrectionl-qiyāmati
فَرْدًاalonefardan
96

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وُدًّۭا

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.829

  1. [829] From Himself and from among each other.

وَعَمِلُوا۟and didwaʿamilū
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِgood deedsl-ṣāliḥāti
سَيَجْعَلُwill bestowsayajʿalu
لَهُمُfor themlahumu
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُthe Most Graciousl-raḥmānu
وُدًّۭاaffectionwuddan
97

فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لِتُبَشِّرَ بِهِ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ وَتُنذِرَ بِهِۦ قَوْمًۭا لُّدًّۭا

So, [O Muḥammad], We have only made it [i.e., the Qur’ān] easy in your tongue [i.e., the Arabic language] that you may give good tidings thereby to the righteous and warn thereby a hostile people.

يَسَّرْنَٰهُWe (have) made it easyyassarnāhu
بِلِسَانِكَin your tonguebilisānika
لِتُبَشِّرَthat you may give glad tidingslitubashira

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ(to) the righteousl-mutaqīna
وَتُنذِرَand warnwatundhira

قَوْمًۭاa peopleqawman
لُّدًّۭاhostileluddan
98

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزًۢا

And how many have We destroyed before them of generations? Do you perceive of them anyone or hear from them a sound?
