101

وَمَا ظَلَمْنَٰهُمْ وَلَٰكِن ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۖ فَمَآ أَغْنَتْ عَنْهُمْ ءَالِهَتُهُمُ ٱلَّتِى يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ لَّمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَمَا زَادُوهُمْ غَيْرَ تَتْبِيبٍۢ

And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. And they were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than Allāh when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.

وَمَاAnd notwamā
ظَلَمْنَٰهُمْWe wronged themẓalamnāhum
وَلَٰكِنbutwalākin
ظَلَمُوٓا۟they wrongedẓalamū
أَنفُسَهُمْthemselvesanfusahum
فَمَآSo notfamā
أَغْنَتْavailedaghnat
عَنْهُمْthemʿanhum
ءَالِهَتُهُمُtheir godsālihatuhumu
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
يَدْعُونَthey invokedyadʿūna
مِنother than Allahmin
دُونِother than Allahdūni
ٱللَّهِother than Allahl-lahi
مِنanymin
شَىْءٍۢthingshayin
لَّمَّاwhenlammā
جَآءَcamejāa
أَمْرُ(the) command (of) your Lordamru
رَبِّكَ(the) command (of) your Lordrabbika
وَمَاAnd notwamā
زَادُوهُمْthey increased themzādūhum
غَيْرَother thanghayra
تَتْبِيبٍۢruintatbībin
102

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَآ أَخَذَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ وَهِىَ ظَٰلِمَةٌ ۚ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُۥٓ أَلِيمٌۭ شَدِيدٌ

And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the cities while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.

وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thuswakadhālika
أَخْذُ(is) the seizure (of) your Lordakhdhu
رَبِّكَ(is) the seizure (of) your Lordrabbika
إِذَآwhenidhā
أَخَذَHe seizesakhadha
ٱلْقُرَىٰthe citiesl-qurā
وَهِىَwhile theywahiya
ظَٰلِمَةٌ(are) doing wrongẓālimatun
إِنَّIndeedinna
أَخْذَهُۥٓHis seizureakhdhahu
أَلِيمٌۭ(is) painfulalīmun
شَدِيدٌ(and) severeshadīdun
103

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٌۭ مَّجْمُوعٌۭ لَّهُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٌۭ مَّشْهُودٌۭ

Indeed in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which the people will be collected, and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed.

لَءَايَةًۭ(is) surely a Signlaāyatan
لِّمَنْfor (those) wholiman
خَافَfearkhāfa
عَذَابَ(the) punishmentʿadhāba
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafterl-ākhirati
ذَٰلِكَThatdhālika
يَوْمٌۭ(is) a Dayyawmun
مَّجْمُوعٌۭ(will) be gatheredmajmūʿun
لَّهُon itlahu
ٱلنَّاسُthe mankindl-nāsu
وَذَٰلِكَand thatwadhālika
يَوْمٌۭ(is) a Dayyawmun
مَّشْهُودٌۭwitnessedmashhūdun
104

وَمَا نُؤَخِّرُهُۥٓ إِلَّا لِأَجَلٍۢ مَّعْدُودٍۢ

And We do not delay it except for a limited term.

لِأَجَلٍۢfor a termli-ajalin
مَّعْدُودٍۢlimitedmaʿdūdin
105

يَوْمَ يَأْتِ لَا تَكَلَّمُ نَفْسٌ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِىٌّۭ وَسَعِيدٌۭ

The Day it comes no soul will speak except by His permission. And among them will be the wretched and the prosperous.

إِلَّاexceptillā
بِإِذْنِهِۦby His leavebi-idh'nihi
فَمِنْهُمْThen among themfamin'hum
شَقِىٌّۭ(will be the) wretchedshaqiyyun
وَسَعِيدٌۭand (the) gladwasaʿīdun
106

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ شَقُوا۟ فَفِى ٱلنَّارِ لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌۭ وَشَهِيقٌ

As for those who were [destined to be] wretched, they will be in the Fire. For them therein is [violent] exhaling and inhaling.578

  1. [578] i.e., their sighs and sobs, resembling the bray of a donkey.

فَأَمَّاAs forfa-ammā
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
شَقُوا۟were wretchedshaqū
فَفِىthen (they will be) infafī
ٱلنَّارِthe Firel-nāri
لَهُمْFor themlahum
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
زَفِيرٌۭ(is) sighingzafīrun
وَشَهِيقٌand wailingwashahīqun
107

خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ فَعَّالٌۭ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ

[They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends.

إِلَّاexceptillā
مَاwhat your Lord wills

رَبُّكَwhat your Lord willsrabbuka
إِنَّIndeedinna
رَبَّكَyour Lordrabbaka
فَعَّالٌۭ(is) All-Accomplisherfaʿʿālun
لِّمَاof whatlimā
يُرِيدُHe intendsyurīdu
108

۞ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ سُعِدُوا۟ فَفِى ٱلْجَنَّةِ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَ ۖ عَطَآءً غَيْرَ مَجْذُوذٍۢ

And as for those who were [destined to be] prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted.

ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna

فَفِىthen (they will be) infafī
ٱلْجَنَّةِParadisel-janati
خَٰلِدِينَ(will be) abidingkhālidīna
فِيهَاthereinfīhā
مَاas long as remains
دَامَتِas long as remainsdāmati
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُthe heavensl-samāwātu
وَٱلْأَرْضُand the earthwal-arḍu
إِلَّاexceptillā
مَاwhat your Lord wills
شَآءَwhat your Lord willsshāa
رَبُّكَwhat your Lord willsrabbuka
عَطَآءًa bestowalʿaṭāan
غَيْرَnotghayra
مَجْذُوذٍۢinterruptedmajdhūdhin
109

فَلَا تَكُ فِى مِرْيَةٍۢ مِّمَّا يَعْبُدُ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ۚ مَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا كَمَا يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُهُم مِّن قَبْلُ ۚ وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنقُوصٍۢ

So do not be in doubt, [O Muḥammad], as to what these [polytheists] are worshipping. They worship not except as their fathers worshipped before. And indeed, We will give them their share undiminished.

هَٰٓؤُلَآءِthese (polytheists)hāulāi

يَعْبُدُونَthey worshipyaʿbudūna
إِلَّاexceptillā
كَمَاas whatkamā
يَعْبُدُworshippedyaʿbudu
ءَابَآؤُهُمtheir forefathersābāuhum
مِّنbeforemin
قَبْلُbeforeqablu
وَإِنَّاAnd indeed, Wewa-innā
لَمُوَفُّوهُمْwill surely pay them in fulllamuwaffūhum
نَصِيبَهُمْtheir sharenaṣībahum
غَيْرَwithoutghayra
مَنقُوصٍۢbeing diminishedmanqūṣin
110

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَٰبَ فَٱخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ ۚ وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌۭ سَبَقَتْ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِىَ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَفِى شَكٍّۢ مِّنْهُ مُرِيبٍۢ

And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement. And if not for a word579 that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them. And indeed they are, concerning it [i.e., the Qur’ān], in disquieting doubt.

ٱلْكِتَٰبَthe Bookl-kitāba
فَٱخْتُلِفَbut differences arosefa-ukh'tulifa
فِيهِthereinfīhi
وَلَوْلَاAnd if notwalawlā
كَلِمَةٌۭ(for) a Wordkalimatun
سَبَقَتْ(that) precededsabaqat
مِنfrommin
رَّبِّكَyour Lordrabbika
لَقُضِىَsurely would have been judgedlaquḍiya
بَيْنَهُمْbetween thembaynahum
وَإِنَّهُمْAnd indeed, theywa-innahum
لَفِىsurely (are) inlafī
شَكٍّۢdoubtshakkin
مِّنْهُconcerning itmin'hu
مُرِيبٍۢsuspiciousmurībin
111

وَإِنَّ كُلًّۭا لَّمَّا لَيُوَفِّيَنَّهُمْ رَبُّكَ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌۭ

And indeed, each [of the believers and disbelievers] - your Lord will fully compensate them for their deeds. Indeed, He is Aware of what they do.

كُلًّۭاto each [when]kullan
لَّمَّاto each [when]lammā
لَيُوَفِّيَنَّهُمْsurely will pay them in fulllayuwaffiyannahum
رَبُّكَyour Lordrabbuka
أَعْمَٰلَهُمْtheir deedsaʿmālahum
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, Heinnahu
بِمَاof whatbimā
يَعْمَلُونَthey doyaʿmalūna
خَبِيرٌۭ(is) All-Awarekhabīrun
112

فَٱسْتَقِمْ كَمَآ أُمِرْتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌۭ

So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allāh], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.

فَٱسْتَقِمْSo stand firmfa-is'taqim
كَمَآaskamā
أُمِرْتَyou are commandedumir'ta
وَمَنand (those) whowaman
تَابَturn (in repentance)tāba
مَعَكَwith youmaʿaka
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
تَطْغَوْا۟transgresstaṭghaw
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, Heinnahu
بِمَاof whatbimā
تَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūna
بَصِيرٌۭ(is) All-Seerbaṣīrun
113

وَلَا تَرْكَنُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ فَتَمَسَّكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَآءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ

And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest you be touched by the Fire, and you would not have other than Allāh any protectors; then you would not be helped.

تَرْكَنُوٓا۟inclinetarkanū
إِلَىtoilā
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
ظَلَمُوا۟do wrongẓalamū
فَتَمَسَّكُمُlest touches youfatamassakumu
ٱلنَّارُthe Firel-nāru
وَمَاand notwamā
لَكُم(is) for youlakum
مِّنbesides Allahmin
دُونِbesides Allahdūni
ٱللَّهِbesides Allahl-lahi
مِنْanymin
أَوْلِيَآءَprotectorsawliyāa
ثُمَّthenthumma
لَاnot
تُنصَرُونَyou will be helpedtunṣarūna
114

وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ طَرَفَىِ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًۭا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلْحَسَنَٰتِ يُذْهِبْنَ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ذِكْرَىٰ لِلذَّٰكِرِينَ

And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.

وَأَقِمِAnd establishwa-aqimi
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَthe prayerl-ṣalata
طَرَفَىِ(at the) two endsṭarafayi
ٱلنَّهَارِ(of) the dayl-nahāri
وَزُلَفًۭاand (at) the approachwazulafan
مِّنَofmina
ٱلَّيْلِthe nightal-layli
إِنَّIndeedinna
ٱلْحَسَنَٰتِthe good deedsl-ḥasanāti
يُذْهِبْنَremoveyudh'hib'na
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِthe evil deedsl-sayiāti
ذَٰلِكَThatdhālika
ذِكْرَىٰ(is) a reminderdhik'rā
لِلذَّٰكِرِينَfor those who rememberlildhākirīna
115

وَٱصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

And be patient, for indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.

وَٱصْبِرْAnd be patientwa-iṣ'bir
فَإِنَّfor indeedfa-inna
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
لَا(does) not
يُضِيعُlet go wasteyuḍīʿu
أَجْرَ(the) rewardajra
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ(of) the good-doersl-muḥ'sinīna
116

فَلَوْلَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرُونِ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ أُو۟لُوا۟ بَقِيَّةٍۢ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْفَسَادِ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا مِّمَّنْ أَنجَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ ۗ وَٱتَّبَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مَآ أُتْرِفُوا۟ فِيهِ وَكَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ

So why were there not580 among the generations before you those of enduring discrimination forbidding corruption on earth - except a few of those We saved from among them? But those who wronged pursued what luxury they were given therein, and they were criminals.

بَقِيَّةٍۢthose possessing a remnantbaqiyyatin
يَنْهَوْنَforbiddingyanhawna
عَنِfromʿani
ٱلْفَسَادِthe corruptionl-fasādi
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earthl-arḍi
إِلَّاexceptillā
قَلِيلًۭاa fewqalīlan
مِّمَّنْof thosemimman
أَنجَيْنَاWe savedanjaynā
مِنْهُمْamong themmin'hum
وَٱتَّبَعَBut followedwa-ittabaʿa
ٱلَّذِينَthose whoalladhīna
ظَلَمُوا۟did wrongẓalamū
مَآwhat
أُتْرِفُوا۟luxury they were givenut'rifū
فِيهِthereinfīhi
وَكَانُوا۟and they werewakānū
مُجْرِمِينَcriminalsmuj'rimīna
117

وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ لِيُهْلِكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ بِظُلْمٍۢ وَأَهْلُهَا مُصْلِحُونَ

And your Lord would not have destroyed the cities unjustly while their people were reformers.

وَمَاAnd notwamā
كَانَwouldkāna
رَبُّكَyour Lordrabbuka
لِيُهْلِكَdestroyliyuh'lika
ٱلْقُرَىٰthe citiesl-qurā
بِظُلْمٍۢunjustlybiẓul'min
وَأَهْلُهَاwhile its peoplewa-ahluhā
مُصْلِحُونَ(were) reformersmuṣ'liḥūna
118

وَلَوْ شَآءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ ٱلنَّاسَ أُمَّةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ ۖ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ مُخْتَلِفِينَ

And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ,

وَلَوْAnd ifwalaw
شَآءَyour Lord (had) willedshāa
رَبُّكَyour Lord (had) willedrabbuka
لَجَعَلَsurely He (could) have madelajaʿala
ٱلنَّاسَthe mankindl-nāsa
أُمَّةًۭone communityummatan
وَٰحِدَةًۭone communitywāḥidatan
وَلَاbut notwalā
يَزَالُونَthey will ceaseyazālūna
مُخْتَلِفِينَto differmukh'talifīna
119

إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ رَبُّكَ ۚ وَلِذَٰلِكَ خَلَقَهُمْ ۗ وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ

Except whom your Lord has given mercy, and for that He created them. But the word of your Lord is to be fulfilled that, "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together."

رَّحِمَyour Lord has bestowed Mercyraḥima
رَبُّكَyour Lord has bestowed Mercyrabbuka
وَلِذَٰلِكَand for thatwalidhālika
خَلَقَهُمْHe created themkhalaqahum
وَتَمَّتْAnd will be fulfilledwatammat
كَلِمَةُ(the) Word of your Lordkalimatu
رَبِّكَ(the) Word of your Lordrabbika
لَأَمْلَأَنَّSurely I will fillla-amla-anna
جَهَنَّمَHelljahannama
مِنَwithmina
ٱلْجِنَّةِthe Jinnl-jinati
وَٱلنَّاسِand the menwal-nāsi
أَجْمَعِينَall togetherajmaʿīna
120

وَكُلًّۭا نَّقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلرُّسُلِ مَا نُثَبِّتُ بِهِۦ فُؤَادَكَ ۚ وَجَآءَكَ فِى هَٰذِهِ ٱلْحَقُّ وَمَوْعِظَةٌۭ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart. And there has come to you, in this, the truth and an instruction and a reminder for the believers.

وَكُلًّۭاAnd eachwakullan
نَّقُصُّWe relatenaquṣṣu
عَلَيْكَto youʿalayka
مِنْofmin
أَنۢبَآءِ(the) newsanbāi
ٱلرُّسُلِ(of) the Messengersl-rusuli
مَا(for) that
نُثَبِّتُWe may make firmnuthabbitu
بِهِۦwith itbihi
فُؤَادَكَyour heartfuādaka
وَجَآءَكَAnd has come to youwajāaka
فِىin
هَٰذِهِthishādhihi
ٱلْحَقُّthe truthl-ḥaqu
وَمَوْعِظَةٌۭand an admonitionwamawʿiẓatun
وَذِكْرَىٰand a reminderwadhik'rā
لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَfor the believerslil'mu'minīna
121

وَقُل لِّلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنَّا عَٰمِلُونَ

And say to those who do not believe, "Work according to your position; indeed, we are working.

لَا(do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَbelieveyu'minūna
ٱعْمَلُوا۟Workiʿ'malū
عَلَىٰ(according) toʿalā
مَكَانَتِكُمْyour positionmakānatikum
إِنَّاindeed, weinnā
عَٰمِلُونَ(are also) workingʿāmilūna
122

وَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مُنتَظِرُونَ

And wait; indeed, we are waiting."

وَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟And waitwa-intaẓirū
إِنَّاindeed, weinnā
مُنتَظِرُونَ(are) ones who waitmuntaẓirūna
123

وَلِلَّهِ غَيْبُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ يُرْجَعُ ٱلْأَمْرُ كُلُّهُۥ فَٱعْبُدْهُ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَيْهِ ۚ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

And to Allāh belong the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth and to Him will be returned the matter, all of it, so worship Him and rely upon Him. And your Lord is not unaware of that which you do.

وَلِلَّهِAnd for Allahwalillahi
غَيْبُ(is the) unseenghaybu
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ(of) the heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earthwal-arḍi
وَإِلَيْهِand to Himwa-ilayhi
يُرْجَعُwill be returnedyur'jaʿu
ٱلْأَمْرُthe matterl-amru
كُلُّهُۥall (of) itkulluhu
فَٱعْبُدْهُso worship Himfa-uʿ'bud'hu
وَتَوَكَّلْand put your trustwatawakkal
عَلَيْهِupon Himʿalayhi
وَمَاAnd your Lord is notwamā
رَبُّكَAnd your Lord is notrabbuka
بِغَٰفِلٍunawarebighāfilin
عَمَّاof whatʿammā
تَعْمَلُونَyou dotaʿmalūna
