About This Surah

Surah Al-Qalam defends the Messenger’s character against accusations, exposes arrogance built on wealth and status, recounts owners who planned to withhold a garden’s produce, and closes with Jonah’s correction and renewed commission. The chapter contrasts patient integrity with mockery and greed. Its final “glance” passage must not be sold as a guaranteed evil-eye cure or used to accuse particular people.

Al-Qalam opens with the pen and what people write, affirming that the Messenger is not mad and possesses outstanding character. The passage responds to hostile accusation; it should not be used to dismiss genuine mental-health conditions or to weaponize psychiatric language against critics. The chapter then sketches an arrogant opponent through conduct—slander, obstruction, aggression, and confidence in wealth and sons—rather than giving readers permission to attach the description to anyone they dislike.

The garden owners plan to harvest before poor people can receive anything. Their garden is destroyed, they recognize wrongdoing, blame one another, and turn toward hope in God. The story condemns calculated exclusion and illustrates repentance. It does not promise that every crop failure is divine punishment or that charity mechanically guarantees agricultural profit.

The chapter contrasts accountable people with those demanding equal outcomes despite rejection. Jonah’s story warns the Messenger not to act with the impatience associated with the man of the fish; divine choice and restoration remain visible.

The closing says hostile people nearly make the Messenger slip with their eyes when hearing the reminder. This wording may be discussed within Quranic interpretation, but the entry makes no fixed recitation, medical cure, or guaranteed protection claim. It never authorizes naming someone as the source of an evil eye, harassing them, or replacing medical and safety assistance.
