When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muḥammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allāh." And Allāh knows that you are His Messenger, and Allāh testifies that the hypocrites are liars.

They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allāh. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

That is because they believed, and then they disbelieved; so their hearts were sealed over, and they do not understand.

And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up1690 - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allāh destroy them; how are they deluded?

And spend [in the way of Allāh] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be of the righteous."

But never will Allāh delay a soul when its time has come. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.

About This Surah
Surah Al-Munafiqun describes hypocrisy as a gap between public declaration and inward rejection. It exposes impressive speech, false oaths and attempts to divide or humiliate the believing community. The chapter ends by warning believers not to let wealth and children distract them from remembrance and timely generosity.
The chapter opens with hypocrites stating that Muhammad is God’s messenger. The statement itself is true, but their testimony is described as false because their inward intent contradicts it. They use oaths as protection and obstruct others.
Their outward appearance and eloquence may impress, but the surah compares them to propped-up timber and describes them as interpreting every cry as directed against them. This is a specific moral portrait, not a diagnostic checklist for online accusations.
When invited to seek the messenger’s prayer for forgiveness, they turn away arrogantly. Their leader’s statement about returning to Medina frames status and expulsion in terms of “honorable” and “humble,” but the surah returns honor to God, the messenger and believers.
The final section turns directly to believers. Wealth and children can distract from remembrance. People are urged to spend before death arrives and regret produces a request for delay.
The chapter therefore moves from criticizing hypocritical speech to warning sincere believers that attachment can produce its own form of failure.
The chapter exposes a mismatch between polished speech and concealed obstruction in a particular community. Its language does not authorize readers to diagnose hearts, publish lists of “hypocrites,” or declare named Muslims outside the faith. Wealth and children can distract from remembrance, while giving before death expresses responsibility. Charity is not a guaranteed extension of life or automatic erasure of harmed people’s rights.
