إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًۭا مُّبِينًۭا

Indeed, We have given you, [O Muḥammad], a clear conquest1507

  1. [1507] Ibn Masʿūd said, "You [people] consider the conquest to be that of Makkah, but we consider it to be the Treaty of al-Ḥudaybiyyah." Al-Bukhārī reported a similar quotation from al-Barā’ bin ʿĀzib. Although initially regarded by the companions as a setback, the treaty, in effect, served to promote the spread of Islām, which led to the conquest of Makkah two years later.

Certainly was Allāh pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muḥammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest1514

Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allāh and [His] pleasure. Their sign is in their faces from the effect of prostration [i.e., prayer]. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers - so that He [i.e., Allāh] may enrage by them1518 the disbelievers. Allāh has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.

About This Surah

Surah Al-Fath describes a “clear victory” in connection with a settlement that many companions initially found difficult: the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. The chapter reframes victory as disciplined obedience, restraint, covenant and long-term opening rather than immediate battlefield gain. It speaks about tranquility placed in believers' hearts, exposes excuses among those who stayed behind, recalls the pledge under the tree and promises future access to the sanctuary.

The opening announces victory, forgiveness and guidance. Historical context is essential: the community had traveled intending pilgrimage and was prevented from entering Mecca, then accepted a treaty with terms that appeared unfavorable to some. The surah's declaration teaches that visible compromise can serve a larger lawful purpose.

Tranquility is described as increasing faith. The chapter distinguishes those who made a sincere pledge from hypocrites and people who offered excuses. These judgments concern the specific expedition and cannot be copied onto modern political opponents without evidence.

The surah honors the pledge under the tree and describes divine knowledge of what was in believers' hearts. It also states that God restrained both sides from fighting and refers to believing men and women in Mecca who were not known to the Muslims. This passage shows that avoiding battle can protect unseen innocent people.

A vision of entering the sanctuary is affirmed, and the closing verse describes the messenger and believers through firmness and mercy, worship and growth. The agricultural image at the end should not be used as a simplistic political identity test.

The “clear victory” is connected to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, a settlement that initially appeared unfavorable to some companions.

Victory is therefore not reducible to military conquest or domination.

The pledge under the tree belongs to a particular prophetic setting and cannot be recreated as unconditional loyalty to modern leaders.

Promises of tranquility and forgiveness must not become guaranteed outcome claims attached to recitation or political campaigns.

Core Themes

  • Victory can take the form of lawful restraint.
  • Tranquility supports faith under uncertainty.
  • Covenant and allegiance create responsibility.
  • Avoiding conflict may protect innocent people.
  • Long-term outcomes can differ from immediate perception.
  • Strength and mercy should not be separated.
