101
فَبَشَّرْنَٰهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ حَلِيمٍۢ
So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.
Word by Word ▾ فَبَشَّرْنَٰهُ So We gave him the glad tidings fabasharnāhu
بِغُلَٰمٍ of a boy bighulāmin
حَلِيمٍۢ forbearing ḥalīmin
102
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعْىَ قَالَ يَٰبُنَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ فِى ٱلْمَنَامِ أَنِّىٓ أَذْبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ
And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion,1296 he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast." [1296] i.e., the ability to work and be of assistance. ↩
Word by Word ▾ فَلَمَّا Then when falammā
بَلَغَ he reached balagha
مَعَهُ the (age of) working with him maʿahu
ٱلسَّعْىَ the (age of) working with him l-saʿya
قَالَ he said qāla
يَٰبُنَىَّ O my son yābunayya
إِنِّىٓ Indeed , I innī
أَرَىٰ have seen arā
فِى in fī
ٱلْمَنَامِ the dream l-manāmi
أَنِّىٓ that I am annī
أَذْبَحُكَ sacrificing you adhbaḥuka
فَٱنظُرْ so look fa-unẓur
مَاذَا what mādhā
تَرَىٰ you see tarā
قَالَ He said qāla
يَٰٓأَبَتِ O my father yāabati
ٱفْعَلْ Do if'ʿal
مَا what mā
تُؤْمَرُ you are commanded tu'maru
سَتَجِدُنِىٓ You will find me satajidunī
إِن if in
شَآءَ Allah wills shāa
ٱللَّهُ Allah wills l-lahu
مِنَ of mina
ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ the patient ones l-ṣābirīna
103
فَلَمَّآ أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلْجَبِينِ
And when they had both submitted1297 and he put him down upon his forehead, [1297] To the command of Allāh. ↩
Word by Word ▾ فَلَمَّآ Then when falammā
أَسْلَمَا both of them had submitted aslamā
وَتَلَّهُۥ and he put him down watallahu
لِلْجَبِينِ upon his forehead lil'jabīni
104
وَنَٰدَيْنَٰهُ أَن يَٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ
We called to him, "O Abraham,
Word by Word ▾ وَنَٰدَيْنَٰهُ And We called out to him wanādaynāhu
أَن that an
يَٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ O Ibrahim yāib'rāhīmu
105
قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Word by Word ▾ قَدْ Verily qad
صَدَّقْتَ you have fulfilled ṣaddaqta
ٱلرُّءْيَآ the vision l-ru'yā
إِنَّا Indeed , We innā
كَذَٰلِكَ thus kadhālika
نَجْزِى [ We ] reward najzī
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
106
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْبَلَٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلْمُبِينُ
Indeed, this was the clear trial.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّ Indeed inna
هَٰذَا this hādhā
لَهُوَ (was) surely [ it ] lahuwa
ٱلْبَلَٰٓؤُا۟ the trial l-balāu
ٱلْمُبِينُ clear l-mubīnu
107
وَفَدَيْنَٰهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍۢ
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,1298 [1298] Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) sent a huge ram to be sacrificed in place of Ishmael. ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَفَدَيْنَٰهُ And We ransomed him wafadaynāhu
بِذِبْحٍ with a sacrifice bidhib'ḥin
عَظِيمٍۢ great ʿaẓīmin
108
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
Word by Word ▾ وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā
عَلَيْهِ for him ʿalayhi
فِى among fī
ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ the later generations l-ākhirīna
109
سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
Word by Word ▾ سَلَٰمٌ Peace be salāmun
عَلَىٰٓ on ʿalā
إِبْرَٰهِيمَ Ibrahim ib'rāhīma
110
كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Word by Word ▾ كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika
نَجْزِى We reward najzī
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
111
إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّهُۥ Indeed , he (was) innahu
مِنْ of min
عِبَادِنَا Our slaves ʿibādinā
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ believing l-mu'minīna
112
وَبَشَّرْنَٰهُ بِإِسْحَٰقَ نَبِيًّۭا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.1299 [1299] This verifies that the firstborn son who was to be sacrificed was Ishmael and not Isaac, as claimed by the Jews and Christians. ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَبَشَّرْنَٰهُ And We gave him glad tidings wabasharnāhu
بِإِسْحَٰقَ of Isaac bi-is'ḥāqa
نَبِيًّۭا a Prophet nabiyyan
مِّنَ among mina
ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
113
وَبَٰرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسْحَٰقَ ۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحْسِنٌۭ وَظَالِمٌۭ لِّنَفْسِهِۦ مُبِينٌۭ
And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself [i.e., sinner].
Word by Word ▾ وَبَٰرَكْنَا And We blessed wabāraknā
عَلَيْهِ him ʿalayhi
وَعَلَىٰٓ and [ on ] waʿalā
إِسْحَٰقَ Isaac is'ḥāqa
وَمِن And of wamin
ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا their offspring dhurriyyatihimā
مُحْسِنٌۭ (are) good-doers muḥ'sinun
وَظَالِمٌۭ and unjust waẓālimun
لِّنَفْسِهِۦ to himself linafsihi
مُبِينٌۭ clear mubīnun
114
وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ
And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.
Word by Word ▾ وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad
مَنَنَّا We conferred Favor manannā
عَلَىٰ upon ʿalā
مُوسَىٰ Musa mūsā
وَهَٰرُونَ and Harun wahārūna
115
وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُمَا وَقَوْمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,
Word by Word ▾ وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُمَا And We saved both of them wanajjaynāhumā
وَقَوْمَهُمَا and their people waqawmahumā
مِنَ from mina
ٱلْكَرْبِ the distress l-karbi
ٱلْعَظِيمِ the great l-ʿaẓīmi
116
وَنَصَرْنَٰهُمْ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْغَٰلِبِينَ
And We supported them so it was they who overcame.
Word by Word ▾ وَنَصَرْنَٰهُمْ And We helped them wanaṣarnāhum
فَكَانُوا۟ so they became fakānū
هُمُ so they became humu
ٱلْغَٰلِبِينَ the victors l-ghālibīna
117
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُمَا ٱلْكِتَٰبَ ٱلْمُسْتَبِينَ
And We gave them the explicit Scripture [i.e., the Torah],
Word by Word ▾ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُمَا And We gave both of them waātaynāhumā
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ the Book l-kitāba
ٱلْمُسْتَبِينَ the clear l-mus'tabīna
118
وَهَدَيْنَٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
And We guided them on the straight path.
Word by Word ▾ وَهَدَيْنَٰهُمَا And We guided both of them wahadaynāhumā
ٱلصِّرَٰطَ (to) the Path l-ṣirāṭa
ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ the Straight l-mus'taqīma
119
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِمَا فِى ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ
And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:
Word by Word ▾ وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā
عَلَيْهِمَا for both of them ʿalayhimā
فِى among fī
ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ the later generations l-ākhirīna
120
سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ
"Peace upon Moses and Aaron."
Word by Word ▾ سَلَٰمٌ Peace be salāmun
عَلَىٰ upon ʿalā
مُوسَىٰ Musa mūsā
وَهَٰرُونَ and Harun wahārūna
121
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّا Indeed , We innā
كَذَٰلِكَ thus kadhālika
نَجْزِى reward najzī
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
122
إِنَّهُمَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

مِنْ (were) of min
عِبَادِنَا Our slaves ʿibādinā
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ believing l-mu'minīna
123
وَإِنَّ إِلْيَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,
Word by Word ▾ وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna
إِلْيَاسَ Elijah il'yāsa
لَمِنَ (was) surely of lamina
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ the Messengers l-mur'salīna
124
إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?
Word by Word ▾ إِذْ When idh
قَالَ he said qāla
لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ to his people liqawmihi
أَلَا Will not alā
تَتَّقُونَ you fear tattaqūna
125
أَتَدْعُونَ بَعْلًۭا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْخَٰلِقِينَ
Do you call upon Baʿl1300 and leave the best of creators - [1300] The name of a great idol worshipped by the people and said to mean "lord." ↩
Word by Word ▾ أَتَدْعُونَ Do you call atadʿūna
بَعْلًۭا Baal baʿlan
وَتَذَرُونَ and you forsake watadharūna
أَحْسَنَ (the) Best aḥsana
ٱلْخَٰلِقِينَ (of) Creators l-khāliqīna
126
ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"
Word by Word ▾ ٱللَّهَ Allah al-laha
رَبَّكُمْ your Lord rabbakum
وَرَبَّ and (the) Lord warabba
ءَابَآئِكُمُ (of) your forefathers ābāikumu
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ (of) your forefathers l-awalīna
127
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ
And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],
Word by Word ▾ فَكَذَّبُوهُ But they denied him fakadhabūhu
فَإِنَّهُمْ so indeed , they fa-innahum
لَمُحْضَرُونَ (will) surely be brought lamuḥ'ḍarūna
128
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
Except the chosen servants of Allāh.
Word by Word ▾ إِلَّا Except illā
عِبَادَ (the) slaves ʿibāda
ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah l-lahi
ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ the chosen ones l-mukh'laṣīna
129
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ
And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:
Word by Word ▾ وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā
عَلَيْهِ for him ʿalayhi
فِى among fī
ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ the later generations l-ākhirīna
130
سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِلْ يَاسِينَ
"Peace upon Elias."1301 [1301] Ilyāseen is said by some commentators to be a plural form, meaning "Elias and those who followed him." ↩
Word by Word ▾ سَلَٰمٌ Peace be salāmun
عَلَىٰٓ upon ʿalā
إِلْ Elijah il yāsīna
يَاسِينَ ↳ Its meaning is given together with the adjacent word.
131
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّا Indeed , We innā
كَذَٰلِكَ thus kadhālika
نَجْزِى reward najzī
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
132
إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.
Word by Word ▾ إِنَّهُۥ Indeed , he (was) innahu
مِنْ of min
عِبَادِنَا Our slaves ʿibādinā
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ believing l-mu'minīna
133
وَإِنَّ لُوطًۭا لَّمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.
Word by Word ▾ وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna
لُوطًۭا Lut lūṭan
لَّمِنَ (was) of lamina
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ the Messengers l-mur'salīna
134
إِذْ نَجَّيْنَٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ
[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,
Word by Word ▾ إِذْ When idh
نَجَّيْنَٰهُ We saved him najjaynāhu
وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ and his family wa-ahlahu
أَجْمَعِينَ all ajmaʿīna
135
إِلَّا عَجُوزًۭا فِى ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ
Except an old woman [i.e., his wife] among those who remained [with the evildoers].
Word by Word ▾ إِلَّا Except illā
عَجُوزًۭا an old woman ʿajūzan
فِى (was) among fī
ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ those who remained behind l-ghābirīna
136
ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا ٱلْءَاخَرِينَ
Then We destroyed the others.
Word by Word ▾ ثُمَّ Then thumma
دَمَّرْنَا We destroyed dammarnā
ٱلْءَاخَرِينَ the others l-ākharīna
137
وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهِم مُّصْبِحِينَ
And indeed, you pass by them in the morning
Word by Word ▾ وَإِنَّكُمْ And indeed , you wa-innakum
لَتَمُرُّونَ surely pass latamurrūna
عَلَيْهِم by them ʿalayhim
مُّصْبِحِينَ (in the) morning muṣ'biḥīna
138
وَبِٱلَّيْلِ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
And at night. Then will you not use reason?
Word by Word ▾ وَبِٱلَّيْلِ And at night wabi-al-layli
أَفَلَا Then will not afalā
تَعْقِلُونَ you use reason taʿqilūna
139
وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.
Word by Word ▾ وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna
يُونُسَ Yunus yūnusa
لَمِنَ (was) surely of lamina
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ the Messengers l-mur'salīna
140
إِذْ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ
[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.
Word by Word ▾ إِذْ When idh
أَبَقَ he ran away abaqa
إِلَى to ilā
ٱلْفُلْكِ the ship l-ful'ki
ٱلْمَشْحُونِ laden l-mashḥūni
141
فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ
And he drew lots1302 and was among the losers. [1302] To determine who would be cast overboard in order to save the other passengers. Having been overloaded, the ship was on the verge of sinking. ↩
Word by Word ▾ فَسَاهَمَ Then he drew lots fasāhama
فَكَانَ and was fakāna
مِنَ of mina
ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ the losers l-mud'ḥaḍīna
142
فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌۭ
Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.1303 [1303] For having given up hope on his people prematurely and having left them without permission from Allāh. ↩
Word by Word ▾ فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ Then swallowed him fal-taqamahu
ٱلْحُوتُ the fish l-ḥūtu
وَهُوَ while he wahuwa
مُلِيمٌۭ (was) blameworthy mulīmun
143
فَلَوْلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ
And had he not been of those who exalt Allāh,
Word by Word ▾ فَلَوْلَآ And if not falawlā
أَنَّهُۥ that he annahu
كَانَ was kāna
مِنَ of mina
ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ those who glorify l-musabiḥīna
144
لَلَبِثَ فِى بَطْنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.1304 [1304] Meaning that the belly of the fish would have become his grave. ↩
Word by Word ▾ لَلَبِثَ Certainly , he (would have) remained lalabitha
فِى in fī
بَطْنِهِۦٓ its belly baṭnihi
إِلَىٰ until ilā
يَوْمِ the Day yawmi
يُبْعَثُونَ they are resurrected yub'ʿathūna
145
۞ فَنَبَذْنَٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌۭ
But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.
Word by Word ▾ فَنَبَذْنَٰهُ But We cast him fanabadhnāhu
بِٱلْعَرَآءِ onto the open shore bil-ʿarāi
وَهُوَ while he wahuwa
سَقِيمٌۭ (was) ill saqīmun
146
وَأَنۢبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةًۭ مِّن يَقْطِينٍۢ
And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.1305 [1305] Which is known to give cooling shade and to be a repellent of flies. ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا And We caused to grow wa-anbatnā
عَلَيْهِ over him ʿalayhi
شَجَرَةًۭ a plant shajaratan
مِّن of min
يَقْطِينٍۢ gourd yaqṭīnin
147
وَأَرْسَلْنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ
And We sent him1306 to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more. [1306] i.e., returned him thereafter. ↩
Word by Word ▾ وَأَرْسَلْنَٰهُ And We sent him wa-arsalnāhu
إِلَىٰ to ilā
مِا۟ئَةِ a hundred mi-ati
أَلْفٍ thousand alfin
أَوْ or aw
يَزِيدُونَ more yazīdūna
148
فَـَٔامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعْنَٰهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍۢ
And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.
Word by Word ▾ فَـَٔامَنُوا۟ And they believed faāmanū
فَمَتَّعْنَٰهُمْ so We gave them enjoyment famattaʿnāhum
إِلَىٰ for ilā
حِينٍۢ a while ḥīnin
149
فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلْبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلْبَنُونَ
So inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?1307 [1307] The people of Makkah claimed that the angels were daughters of Allāh, yet they preferred sons for themselves. ↩
Word by Word ▾ فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ Then ask them fa-is'taftihim
أَلِرَبِّكَ Does your Lord alirabbika
ٱلْبَنَاتُ (have) daughters l-banātu
وَلَهُمُ while for them walahumu
ٱلْبَنُونَ (are) sons l-banūna
150
أَمْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَٰثًۭا وَهُمْ شَٰهِدُونَ
Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"
Word by Word ▾ أَمْ Or am
خَلَقْنَا did We create khalaqnā
ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ the Angels l-malāikata
إِنَٰثًۭا females ināthan
وَهُمْ while they wahum
شَٰهِدُونَ (were) witnesses shāhidūna
