51

قَالَ قَآئِلٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ إِنِّى كَانَ لِى قَرِينٌۭ

A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth].

قَرِينٌۭa companionqarīnun
52

يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُصَدِّقِينَ

Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

يَقُولُWho (would) sayyaqūlu
أَءِنَّكَAre you indeeda-innaka
لَمِنَsurely oflamina
ٱلْمُصَدِّقِينَthose who believel-muṣadiqīna
53

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ

That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

مِتْنَاwe have diedmit'nā
وَكُنَّاand becomewakunnā
تُرَابًۭاdustturāban
وَعِظَٰمًاand boneswaʿiẓāman
أَءِنَّاwill wea-innā
لَمَدِينُونَsurely be brought to Judgmentlamadīnūna
54

قَالَ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ

He will say,1293 "Would you [care to] look?"

  1. [1293] To his companions in Paradise.

مُّطَّلِعُونَbe lookingmuṭṭaliʿūna
55

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِى سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

And he will look and see him1294 in the midst of the Hellfire.

  1. [1294] The companion who had tried to dissuade him from belief on earth.

فَٱطَّلَعَThen he (will) lookfa-iṭṭalaʿa
فَرَءَاهُand see himfaraāhu
فِىin
سَوَآءِ(the) midstsawāi
ٱلْجَحِيمِ(of) the Hellfirel-jaḥīmi
56

قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرْدِينِ

He will say, "By Allāh, you almost ruined me.

لَتُرْدِينِruined melatur'dīni
57

وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّى لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْضَرِينَ

If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

نِعْمَةُ(for the) Graceniʿ'matu
رَبِّى(of) my Lordrabbī
لَكُنتُcertainly, I (would) have beenlakuntu

58

أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ

Then, are we not to die

أَفَمَاThen are notafamā
نَحْنُwenaḥnu
بِمَيِّتِينَ(to) diebimayyitīna
59

إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

ٱلْأُولَىٰthe firstl-ūlā

60

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

Indeed, this is the great attainment.

61

لِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ ٱلْعَٰمِلُونَ

For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

هَٰذَا(of) thishādhā
فَلْيَعْمَلِlet workfalyaʿmali
ٱلْعَٰمِلُونَthe workersl-ʿāmilūna
62

أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌۭ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ

Is that [i.e., Paradise] a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqūm?

خَيْرٌۭbetterkhayrun
نُّزُلًا(as) hospitalitynuzulan
أَمْoram
شَجَرَةُ(the) treeshajaratu
ٱلزَّقُّومِ(of) Zaqquml-zaqūmi
63

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَٰهَا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

إِنَّاIndeed, Weinnā
جَعَلْنَٰهَا[We] have made itjaʿalnāhā
فِتْنَةًۭa trialfit'natan
لِّلظَّٰلِمِينَfor the wrongdoerslilẓẓālimīna
64

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌۭ تَخْرُجُ فِىٓ أَصْلِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

إِنَّهَاIndeed, itinnahā
شَجَرَةٌۭ(is) a treeshajaratun
تَخْرُجُthat growstakhruju
فِىٓin
أَصْلِ(the) bottomaṣli
ٱلْجَحِيمِ(of) the Hellfirel-jaḥīmi
65

طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ

Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

Word by Word
طَلْعُهَاIts emerging fruitṭalʿuhā
كَأَنَّهُۥ(is) as if itka-annahu
رُءُوسُ(was) headsruūsu
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ(of) the devilsl-shayāṭīni
66

فَإِنَّهُمْ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ

And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

فَإِنَّهُمْAnd indeed, theyfa-innahum
لَءَاكِلُونَ(will) surely eatlaākilūna
مِنْهَاfrom itmin'hā
فَمَالِـُٔونَand fillfamāliūna
مِنْهَاwith itmin'hā
ٱلْبُطُونَ(their) belliesl-buṭūna
67

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًۭا مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ

Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرْجِعَهُمْ لَإِلَى ٱلْجَحِيمِ

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

لَإِلَى(will) surely be tola-ilā
ٱلْجَحِيمِthe Hellfirel-jaḥīmi
69

إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ ضَآلِّينَ

Indeed they found their fathers astray.

أَلْفَوْا۟foundalfaw
ءَابَآءَهُمْtheir fathersābāahum
ضَآلِّينَastrayḍāllīna
70

فَهُمْ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

ءَاثَٰرِهِمْtheir footstepsāthārihim
يُهْرَعُونَthey hastenedyuh'raʿūna
71

وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqad
ضَلَّwent astrayḍalla
قَبْلَهُمْbefore themqablahum
أَكْثَرُmostaktharu
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)l-awalīna
72

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ

And We had already sent among them warners.

وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqad
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sentarsalnā
فِيهِمamong themfīhim
مُّنذِرِينَwarnersmundhirīna
73

فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

فَٱنظُرْThen seefa-unẓur
كَيْفَhowkayfa
كَانَwaskāna
عَٰقِبَةُ(the) endʿāqibatu
ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ(of) those who were warnedl-mundharīna
74

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

عِبَادَ(the) slavesʿibāda
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allahl-lahi
ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَthe chosen onesl-mukh'laṣīna
75

وَلَقَدْ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحٌۭ فَلَنِعْمَ ٱلْمُجِيبُونَ

And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

وَلَقَدْAnd verilywalaqad
نَادَىٰنَاcalled Usnādānā
نُوحٌۭNuhnūḥun
فَلَنِعْمَand Bestfalaniʿ'ma
ٱلْمُجِيبُونَ(are We as) Respondersl-mujībūna
76

وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُAnd We saved himwanajjaynāhu
وَأَهْلَهُۥand his familywa-ahlahu
مِنَfrommina
ٱلْكَرْبِthe distressl-karbi
ٱلْعَظِيمِthe greatl-ʿaẓīmi
77

وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ

And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

وَجَعَلْنَاAnd We madewajaʿalnā
ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥhis offspringdhurriyyatahu
هُمُ[they]humu
ٱلْبَاقِينَthe survivorsl-bāqīna
78

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

وَتَرَكْنَاAnd We leftwataraknā
عَلَيْهِfor himʿalayhi
فِىamong
ٱلْءَاخِرِينَthe later generationsl-ākhirīna
79

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٍۢ فِى ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

سَلَٰمٌPeace besalāmun
عَلَىٰuponʿalā
نُوحٍۢNuhnūḥin
فِىamong
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَthe worldsl-ʿālamīna
80

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

إِنَّاIndeed, Weinnā
كَذَٰلِكَthuskadhālika
نَجْزِى[We] rewardnajzī
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَthe good-doersl-muḥ'sinīna
81

إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

إِنَّهُۥIndeed, heinnahu
مِنْ(was) ofmin
عِبَادِنَاOur slavesʿibādinā
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَbelievingl-mu'minīna
82

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْءَاخَرِينَ

Then We drowned the others [i.e., disbelievers].

أَغْرَقْنَاWe drownedaghraqnā
ٱلْءَاخَرِينَthe othersl-ākharīna
83

۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ

And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-inna
مِنamongmin
شِيعَتِهِۦhis kindshīʿatihi
لَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ(was) surely Ibrahimla-ib'rāhīma
84

إِذْ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلْبٍۢ سَلِيمٍ

When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

جَآءَhe camejāa
رَبَّهُۥ(to) his Lordrabbahu
بِقَلْبٍۢwith a heartbiqalbin
سَلِيمٍsoundsalīmin
85

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ

[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?

لِأَبِيهِto his fatherli-abīhi
وَقَوْمِهِۦand his peoplewaqawmihi
مَاذَاWhat is itmādhā
تَعْبُدُونَyou worshiptaʿbudūna
86

أَئِفْكًا ءَالِهَةًۭ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ

Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allāh you desire?

أَئِفْكًاIs it falsehooda-if'kan
ءَالِهَةًۭgodsālihatan
دُونَother thandūna
ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
تُرِيدُونَ(that) you desireturīdūna
87

فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"

فَمَاThen whatfamā
ظَنُّكُم(do) you thinkẓannukum
بِرَبِّabout (the) Lordbirabbi
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ(of) the worldsl-ʿālamīna
88

فَنَظَرَ نَظْرَةًۭ فِى ٱلنُّجُومِ

And he cast a look at the stars

فَنَظَرَThen he glancedfanaẓara
نَظْرَةًۭa glancenaẓratan
فِىat
ٱلنُّجُومِthe starsl-nujūmi
89

فَقَالَ إِنِّى سَقِيمٌۭ

And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."

فَقَالَAnd he saidfaqāla
إِنِّىIndeed, I aminnī
سَقِيمٌۭsicksaqīmun
90

فَتَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ مُدْبِرِينَ

So they turned away from him, departing.

فَتَوَلَّوْا۟So they turned awayfatawallaw
عَنْهُfrom himʿanhu
مُدْبِرِينَdepartingmud'birīna
91

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ

Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?1295

  1. [1295] Consume the offerings placed before them.

92

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنطِقُونَ

What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?"

93

فَرَاغَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضَرْبًۢا بِٱلْيَمِينِ

And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.

ضَرْبًۢاstrikingḍarban
بِٱلْيَمِينِwith the right handbil-yamīni
94

فَأَقْبَلُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يَزِفُّونَ

Then they [i.e., the people] came toward him, hastening.

يَزِفُّونَhasteningyaziffūna
95

قَالَ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مَا تَنْحِتُونَ

He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,

أَتَعْبُدُونَDo you worshipataʿbudūna
مَاwhat
تَنْحِتُونَyou carvetanḥitūna
96

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

While Allāh created you and that which you do?"

وَٱللَّهُWhile Allahwal-lahu
خَلَقَكُمْcreated youkhalaqakum
وَمَاand whatwamā
تَعْمَلُونَyou maketaʿmalūna
97

قَالُوا۟ ٱبْنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنْيَٰنًۭا فَأَلْقُوهُ فِى ٱلْجَحِيمِ

They said, "Construct for him a structure [i.e., furnace] and throw him into the burning fire."

لَهُۥfor himlahu
بُنْيَٰنًۭاa structurebun'yānan
فَأَلْقُوهُand throw himfa-alqūhu
فِىinto
ٱلْجَحِيمِthe blazing Firel-jaḥīmi
98

فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَيْدًۭا فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمُ ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَ

And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the most debased.

فَأَرَادُوا۟And they intendedfa-arādū
بِهِۦfor himbihi
كَيْدًۭاa plotkaydan
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمُbut We made themfajaʿalnāhumu
ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَthe lowestl-asfalīna
99

وَقَالَ إِنِّى ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ

And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.

وَقَالَAnd he saidwaqāla
إِنِّىIndeed, I aminnī
ذَاهِبٌgoingdhāhibun
إِلَىٰtoilā
رَبِّىmy Lordrabbī
سَيَهْدِينِHe will guide mesayahdīni
100

رَبِّ هَبْ لِى مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."
