Surah Al-Hijr Verses 51–99

51

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

And inform them about the guests of Abraham,

Word by Word
وَنَبِّئْهُمْAnd inform themwanabbi'hum
عَنaboutʿan
ضَيْفِ(the) guestsḍayfi
إِبْرَٰهِيمَ(of) Ibrahimib'rāhīma
52

إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًۭا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ

When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful [i.e., apprehensive] of you."

وَجِلُونَafraidwajilūna
53

قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٍۢ

[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."

نُبَشِّرُكَ[we] bring glad tidings to younubashiruka

54

قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"

أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِىDo you give me glad tidingsabashartumūnī
عَلَىٰٓDo you give me glad tidingsʿalā
أَنalthoughan
مَّسَّنِىَhas overtaken memassaniya
ٱلْكِبَرُold agel-kibaru
فَبِمَThen about whatfabima
تُبَشِّرُونَyou give glad tidingstubashirūna
55

قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَٰنِطِينَ

They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."

فَلَاso (do) notfalā

56

قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ

He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"

وَمَنAnd whowaman
يَقْنَطُdespairsyaqnaṭu
مِنofmin
رَّحْمَةِ(the) Mercyraḥmati
رَبِّهِۦٓ(of) his Lordrabbihi
إِلَّاexceptillā
ٱلضَّآلُّونَthose who are astrayl-ḍālūna
57

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

فَمَاThen whatfamā
خَطْبُكُمْ(is) your businesskhaṭbukum
أَيُّهَاO messengersayyuhā
ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَO messengersl-mur'salūna
58

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍۢ مُّجْرِمِينَ

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,

أُرْسِلْنَآ[we] have been sentur'sil'nā
إِلَىٰtoilā
قَوْمٍۢa peopleqawmin
مُّجْرِمِينَcriminalsmuj'rimīna
59

إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all

لُوطٍof Lutlūṭin
إِنَّاindeed, weinnā
لَمُنَجُّوهُمْsurely will save themlamunajjūhum
أَجْمَعِينَallajmaʿīna
60

إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ

Except his wife." We [i.e., Allāh] decreed that she is of those who remain behind.679

  1. [679] For having collaborated with the evildoers.

قَدَّرْنَآWe have decreedqaddarnā
إِنَّهَاthat sheinnahā
لَمِنَ(is) surely oflamina
ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَthose who remain behindl-ghābirīna
61

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

فَلَمَّاAnd whenfalammā
جَآءَcamejāa
ءَالَ(to the) familyāla
لُوطٍ(of) Lutlūṭin
ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَthe messengersl-mur'salūna
62

قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌۭ مُّنكَرُونَ

He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."

قَوْمٌۭ(are) a peopleqawmun
مُّنكَرُونَunknownmunkarūna
63

قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ

They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,

جِئْنَٰكَwe have come to youji'nāka
بِمَاwith whatbimā
كَانُوا۟they werekānū
فِيهِin itfīhi
يَمْتَرُونَdisputingyamtarūna
64

وَأَتَيْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَٰدِقُونَ

And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

وَأَتَيْنَٰكَAnd we have come to youwa-ataynāka
بِٱلْحَقِّwith the truthbil-ḥaqi
وَإِنَّاand indeed, wewa-innā
لَصَٰدِقُونَsurely (are) truthfullaṣādiqūna
65

فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌۭ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."

بِأَهْلِكَwith your familybi-ahlika
بِقِطْعٍۢin a portionbiqiṭ'ʿin
مِّنَofmina
ٱلَّيْلِthe nightal-layli
وَٱتَّبِعْand followwa-ittabiʿ
أَدْبَٰرَهُمْtheir backsadbārahum
وَلَاand notwalā
يَلْتَفِتْlet look backyaltafit
مِنكُمْamong youminkum
أَحَدٌۭanyoneaḥadun
وَٱمْضُوا۟and go onwa-im'ḍū
حَيْثُwhereḥaythu
تُؤْمَرُونَyou are orderedtu'marūna
66

وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌۭ مُّصْبِحِينَ

And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.

وَقَضَيْنَآAnd We conveyedwaqaḍaynā
إِلَيْهِto himilayhi
ذَٰلِكَ[that]dhālika
ٱلْأَمْرَthe matterl-amra
أَنَّthatanna
دَابِرَ(the) rootdābira
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ(of) thesehāulāi
مَقْطُوعٌۭwould be cut offmaqṭūʿun
مُّصْبِحِينَ(by) early morningmuṣ'biḥīna
67

وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

And the people of the city came rejoicing.680

  1. [680] At the news of Lot's visitors.

أَهْلُ(the) peopleahlu
ٱلْمَدِينَةِ(of) the cityl-madīnati
يَسْتَبْشِرُونَrejoicingyastabshirūna
68

قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ

[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.

إِنَّIndeedinna
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِthesehāulāi
ضَيْفِى(are) my guestsḍayfī
فَلَاso (do) notfalā
تَفْضَحُونِshame metafḍaḥūni
69

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ

And fear Allāh and do not disgrace me."

وَٱتَّقُوا۟And fearwa-ittaqū
ٱللَّهَAllahl-laha
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
تُخْزُونِdisgrace metukh'zūni
70

قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"

أَوَلَمْDid notawalam
نَنْهَكَwe forbid younanhaka
عَنِfromʿani
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَthe worldl-ʿālamīna
71

قَالَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَٰعِلِينَ

[Lot] said, "These are my daughters681 - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."

  1. [681] i.e., the women of his community who were lawful for marriage.

هَٰٓؤُلَآءِThesehāulāi
بَنَاتِىٓ(are) my daughtersbanātī
إِنifin
كُنتُمْyou would bekuntum
فَٰعِلِينَdoersfāʿilīna
72

لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ

By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.

لَعَمْرُكَBy your lifelaʿamruka
إِنَّهُمْindeed, theyinnahum
لَفِىwere inlafī
سَكْرَتِهِمْtheir intoxicationsakratihim
يَعْمَهُونَwandering blindlyyaʿmahūna
73

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ

So the shriek682 seized them at sunrise.

ٱلصَّيْحَةُthe awful cryl-ṣayḥatu
مُشْرِقِينَat sunrisemush'riqīna
74

فَجَعَلْنَا عَٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةًۭ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

فَجَعَلْنَاAnd We madefajaʿalnā
عَٰلِيَهَاits highest (part)ʿāliyahā
سَافِلَهَاits lowestsāfilahā
وَأَمْطَرْنَاand We rainedwa-amṭarnā
عَلَيْهِمْupon themʿalayhim
حِجَارَةًۭstonesḥijāratan
مِّنofmin
سِجِّيلٍbaked claysijjīlin
75

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ

Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.

لَءَايَٰتٍۢ(are) the Signslaāyātin
لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَfor those who discernlil'mutawassimīna
76

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍۢ مُّقِيمٍ

And indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.

وَإِنَّهَاAnd indeed, itwa-innahā
لَبِسَبِيلٍۢ(is) on a roadlabisabīlin
مُّقِيمٍestablishedmuqīmin
77

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

لَءَايَةًۭsurely (is) a Signlaāyatan
لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَfor the believerslil'mu'minīna
78

وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَٰلِمِينَ

And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,

كَانَAnd werekāna
أَصْحَٰبُ(the) companionsaṣḥābu
ٱلْأَيْكَةِ(of) the woodl-aykati
لَظَٰلِمِينَsurely wrongdoerslaẓālimīna
79

فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

فَٱنتَقَمْنَاSo We took retributionfa-intaqamnā
مِنْهُمْfrom themmin'hum
وَإِنَّهُمَاand indeed, they bothwa-innahumā
لَبِإِمَامٍۢ(were) on a highwaylabi-imāmin
مُّبِينٍۢclearmubīnin
80

وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr683 [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.

  1. [683] The valley of stone.

أَصْحَٰبُ(the) companionsaṣḥābu
ٱلْحِجْرِ(of) the Rocky Tractl-ḥij'ri
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengersl-mur'salīna
81

وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ

And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.

وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْAnd We gave themwaātaynāhum
ءَايَٰتِنَاOur Signsāyātinā
فَكَانُوا۟but they werefakānū
عَنْهَاfrom themʿanhā
مُعْرِضِينَturning awaymuʿ'riḍīna
82

وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ

And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

وَكَانُوا۟And they used (to)wakānū
يَنْحِتُونَcarveyanḥitūna
مِنَfrommina
ٱلْجِبَالِthe mountainsl-jibāli
بُيُوتًاhousesbuyūtan
ءَامِنِينَsecureāminīna
83

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ

But the shriek seized them at early morning,

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُBut seized themfa-akhadhathumu
ٱلصَّيْحَةُthe awful cryl-ṣayḥatu
مُصْبِحِينَ(at) early morningmuṣ'biḥīna
84

فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.

عَنْهُمthemʿanhum
مَّاwhat
كَانُوا۟they used (to)kānū
يَكْسِبُونَearnyaksibūna
85

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِيَةٌۭ ۖ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ

And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

خَلَقْنَاWe createdkhalaqnā
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِthe heavensl-samāwāti
وَٱلْأَرْضَand the earthwal-arḍa
وَمَاand whateverwamā
بَيْنَهُمَآ(is) between thembaynahumā
إِلَّاexceptillā
بِٱلْحَقِّin truthbil-ḥaqi
وَإِنَّAnd indeedwa-inna
ٱلسَّاعَةَthe Hourl-sāʿata
لَءَاتِيَةٌۭ(is) surely cominglaātiyatun
فَٱصْفَحِSo overlookfa-iṣ'faḥi
ٱلصَّفْحَ(with) forgivenessl-ṣafḥa
ٱلْجَمِيلَgraciousl-jamīla
86

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.

ٱلْخَلَّٰقُ(is) the Creatorl-khalāqu
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knowerl-ʿalīmu
87

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَٰكَ سَبْعًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ

And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses]684 and the great Qur’ān.

  1. [684] Referring to Sūrah al-Fātiḥah.

سَبْعًۭاsevensabʿan
مِّنَofmina
ٱلْمَثَانِىthe oft-repeatedl-mathānī
وَٱلْقُرْءَانَand the Quranwal-qur'āna
ٱلْعَظِيمَGreatl-ʿaẓīma
88

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًۭا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.

مَتَّعْنَاWe have bestowedmattaʿnā

أَزْوَٰجًۭا(to) categoriesazwājan
مِّنْهُمْof themmin'hum
وَلَاand (do) notwalā
تَحْزَنْgrievetaḥzan
عَلَيْهِمْover themʿalayhim
وَٱخْفِضْAnd lowerwa-ikh'fiḍ
جَنَاحَكَyour wingjanāḥaka
لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَto the believerslil'mu'minīna
89

وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -

إِنِّىٓIndeed, Iinnī
أَنَا[I] amanā
ٱلنَّذِيرُa warnerl-nadhīru
ٱلْمُبِينُclearl-mubīnu
90

كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ

Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators685

  1. [685] Those who separated from the teachings of their prophets. Another meaning is "As We sent down [punishment] on the sworn opponents [to Allāh's message]."

أَنزَلْنَاWe sent downanzalnā
عَلَىonʿalā
ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَthose who dividedl-muq'tasimīna
91

ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ

Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.686

  1. [686] Accepting part and rejecting part according to their own inclinations.

ٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quranl-qur'āna
عِضِينَ(in) partsʿiḍīna
92

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

So by your Lord, We will surely question them all

فَوَرَبِّكَSo by your Lordfawarabbika
لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْsurely We will question themlanasalannahum
أَجْمَعِينَallajmaʿīna
93

عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

About what they used to do.

94

فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

Then declare what you are commanded687 and turn away from the polytheists.688

  1. [687] The implication is "Thereby you will distinguish or separate the disbelievers from the believers."
  2. [688] Any who persist in association of others with Allāh.

بِمَاof whatbimā
تُؤْمَرُyou are orderedtu'maru
وَأَعْرِضْand turn awaywa-aʿriḍ
عَنِfromʿani
ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَthe polytheistsl-mush'rikīna
95

إِنَّا كَفَيْنَٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ

Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers

إِنَّاIndeed, Weinnā
كَفَيْنَٰكَ[We] are sufficient for youkafaynāka
ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ(against) the mockersl-mus'tahziīna
96

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

Who make [equal] with Allāh another deity. But they are going to know.

ٱللَّهِAllahl-lahi
إِلَٰهًاgodilāhan
ءَاخَرَanotherākhara
فَسَوْفَBut soonfasawfa
يَعْلَمُونَthey will come to knowyaʿlamūna
97

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ

And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

So exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].

رَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbika
وَكُنand bewakun
مِّنَofmina
ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَthose who prostratel-sājidīna

وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].
