Surah Al-Waqi'ah Verses 51–96

51

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ

Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,

Word by Word
ثُمَّThenthumma
إِنَّكُمْindeed youinnakum
أَيُّهَاO those astrayayyuhā
ٱلضَّآلُّونَO those astrayl-ḍālūna
ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَthe deniersl-mukadhibūna
52

لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍۢ مِّن زَقُّومٍۢ

Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm

Word by Word
لَءَاكِلُونَWill surely eatlaākilūna
مِنfrommin
شَجَرٍۢ(the) treeshajarin
مِّنofmin
زَقُّومٍۢZaqqumzaqqūmin
53

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ

And filling with it your bellies

فَمَالِـُٔونَThen will fillfamāliūna
مِنْهَاwith itmin'hā
ٱلْبُطُونَthe belliesl-buṭūna
54

فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ

And drinking on top of it from scalding water

فَشَٰرِبُونَAnd drinkfashāribūna
عَلَيْهِover itʿalayhi
مِنَ[from]mina
ٱلْحَمِيمِthe scalding waterl-ḥamīmi
55

فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ

And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.

فَشَٰرِبُونَAnd will drinkfashāribūna
شُرْبَ(as) drinkingshur'ba
ٱلْهِيمِ(of) the thirsty camelsl-hīmi
56

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.

هَٰذَاThishādhā
نُزُلُهُمْ(is) their hospitalitynuzuluhum
يَوْمَ(on the) Dayyawma
ٱلدِّينِ(of) Judgmentl-dīni
57

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

We have created you, so why do you not believe?

نَحْنُWenaḥnu
خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ[We] created youkhalaqnākum
فَلَوْلَاso why (do) notfalawlā
تُصَدِّقُونَyou admit the truthtuṣaddiqūna
58

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ

Have you seen that which you emit?1613

  1. [1613] i.e., semen, which contains the potential for human life.

تُمْنُونَyou emittum'nūna
59

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ

Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?

تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓwho create ittakhluqūnahu
أَمْoram
نَحْنُ(are) Wenaḥnu
ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَthe Creatorsl-khāliqūna
60

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone

قَدَّرْنَا[We] have decreedqaddarnā
بَيْنَكُمُamong youbaynakumu
ٱلْمَوْتَthe deathl-mawta
وَمَاand notwamā
نَحْنُWenaḥnu
بِمَسْبُوقِينَ(are) outrunbimasbūqīna
61

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.1614

  1. [1614] An alternative meaning has also been given: "...in that We will replace the likes of you [with others upon the earth] and create you [in the Hereafter] in that which you do not know."

نُّبَدِّلَWe (will) changenubaddila
أَمْثَٰلَكُمْyour likeness [es]amthālakum
وَنُنشِئَكُمْand produce youwanunshi-akum
فِىin
مَاwhat
لَاnot
تَعْلَمُونَyou knowtaʿlamūna
62

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?

وَلَقَدْAnd certainlywalaqad
عَلِمْتُمُyou knowʿalim'tumu
ٱلنَّشْأَةَthe creationl-nashata
ٱلْأُولَىٰthe firstl-ūlā
فَلَوْلَاso why notfalawlā
تَذَكَّرُونَyou take heedtadhakkarūna
63

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ

And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمAnd do you seeafara-aytum
مَّاwhat
تَحْرُثُونَyou sowtaḥruthūna
64

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ

Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?

ءَأَنتُمْIs it you (who)a-antum
تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓcause it to growtazraʿūnahu
أَمْoram
نَحْنُ(are) Wenaḥnu
ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَthe Ones Who growl-zāriʿūna
65

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًۭا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ

If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,1615

  1. [1615] At what had happened or remain in a state of shock. Another meaning is "in regret."

نَشَآءُWe willednashāu
لَجَعَلْنَٰهُWe (would) surely, make itlajaʿalnāhu
حُطَٰمًۭاdebrisḥuṭāman
فَظَلْتُمْthen you would remainfaẓaltum
تَفَكَّهُونَwonderingtafakkahūna
66

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ

[Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;

إِنَّاIndeed, weinnā
لَمُغْرَمُونَsurely are laden with debtlamugh'ramūna
67

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

Rather, we have been deprived."

مَحْرُومُونَ(are) deprivedmaḥrūmūna
68

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ

And have you seen the water that you drink?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُDo you seeafara-aytumu
ٱلْمَآءَthe waterl-māa
ٱلَّذِىwhichalladhī
تَشْرَبُونَyou drinktashrabūna
69

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ

Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?

أَنزَلْتُمُوهُwho send it downanzaltumūhu
مِنَfrommina
ٱلْمُزْنِthe rain cloudsl-muz'ni
أَمْoram
نَحْنُWenaḥnu
ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ(are) the Ones to sendl-munzilūna
70

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًۭا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ

If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?

أُجَاجًۭاsaltyujājan
فَلَوْلَاthen why are you not gratefulfalawlā

71

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ

And have you seen the fire that you ignite?

ٱلنَّارَthe Firel-nāra
ٱلَّتِىwhichallatī
تُورُونَyou ignitetūrūna
72

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ

Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?

أَنشَأْتُمْwho producedanshatum
شَجَرَتَهَآits treeshajaratahā
أَمْoram
نَحْنُWenaḥnu
ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ(are) the Producersl-munshiūna
73

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَمَتَٰعًۭا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ

We have made it a reminder1616 and provision for the travelers,1617

  1. [1616] Of the great fire of Hell.
  2. [1617] In the form of flints or other means by which to ignite fire. Travelers are mentioned because of the special convenience to them, although it is a provision for all people in general.

نَحْنُWenaḥnu
جَعَلْنَٰهَاhave made itjaʿalnāhā
تَذْكِرَةًۭa remindertadhkiratan
وَمَتَٰعًۭاand a provisionwamatāʿan
لِّلْمُقْوِينَfor the wayfarers in the desertlil'muq'wīna
74

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

فَسَبِّحْSo glorifyfasabbiḥ
بِٱسْمِ(the) namebi-is'mi
رَبِّكَ(of) your Lordrabbika
ٱلْعَظِيمِthe Most Greatl-ʿaẓīmi
75

۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ

Then I swear by the setting of the stars,1618

  1. [1618] Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) confirms absolutely by oath.

أُقْسِمُI swearuq'simu
بِمَوَٰقِعِby settingbimawāqiʿi
ٱلنُّجُومِ(of) the starsl-nujūmi
76

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ

And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.

وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, itwa-innahu
لَقَسَمٌۭ(is) surely an oathlaqasamun
لَّوْiflaw
تَعْلَمُونَyou knowtaʿlamūna
عَظِيمٌgreatʿaẓīmun
77

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ

Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.

لَقُرْءَانٌۭ(is) surely, a Quranlaqur'ānun
كَرِيمٌۭnoblekarīmun
78

فِى كِتَٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ

In a Register well-protected;1619.

  1. [1619] The Preserved Slate (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ), which is with Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā).

79

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ

None touch it except the purified [i.e., the angels].

إِلَّاexceptillā
ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَthe purifiedl-muṭaharūna
80

تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

81

أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ

Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent

أَفَبِهَٰذَاThen is it to thisafabihādhā
ٱلْحَدِيثِstatementl-ḥadīthi
أَنتُمthat youantum
مُّدْهِنُونَ(are) indifferentmud'hinūna
82

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ

And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?

رِزْقَكُمْyour provisionriz'qakum
أَنَّكُمْthat youannakum
تُكَذِّبُونَdenytukadhibūna
83

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ

Then why, when it [i.e., the soul at death] reaches the throat

بَلَغَتِit reachesbalaghati
ٱلْحُلْقُومَthe throatl-ḥul'qūma
84

وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ

And you are at that time looking on -

وَأَنتُمْAnd youwa-antum
حِينَئِذٍۢ(at) that timeḥīna-idhin
تَنظُرُونَlook ontanẓurūna
85

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ

And We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -

وَنَحْنُAnd Wewanaḥnu
أَقْرَبُ(are) neareraqrabu
إِلَيْهِto himilayhi
مِنكُمْthan youminkum
وَلَٰكِنbutwalākin
لَّاyou (do) not see
تُبْصِرُونَyou (do) not seetub'ṣirūna
86

فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ

Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,

كُنتُمْyou arekuntum
غَيْرَnotghayra
مَدِينِينَto be recompensedmadīnīna
87

تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

Bring it back,1620 if you should be truthful?

  1. [1620] i.e., return the soul to the body, meaning that just as you cannot prevent death when it is decreed, you will not escape the recompense when it is decreed.

صَٰدِقِينَtruthfulṣādiqīna
88

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

And if he [i.e., the deceased] was of those brought near [to Allāh],

إِنifin
كَانَhe waskāna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَthose brought nearl-muqarabīna
89

فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍۢ

Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.

وَرَيْحَانٌۭand bountywarayḥānun
وَجَنَّتُand a Gardenwajannatu
نَعِيمٍۢ(of) Pleasurenaʿīmin
90

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

And if he was of the companions of the right,

وَأَمَّآAndwa-ammā
إِنifin
كَانَhe waskāna
مِنْofmin
أَصْحَٰبِ(the) companionsaṣḥābi
ٱلْيَمِينِ(of) the rightl-yamīni
91

فَسَلَٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."

فَسَلَٰمٌۭThen, peacefasalāmun
لَّكَfor youlaka
مِنْ[from]min
أَصْحَٰبِ(the) companionsaṣḥābi
ٱلْيَمِينِ(of) the rightl-yamīni
92

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,

وَأَمَّآButwa-ammā
إِنifin
كَانَhe waskāna
مِنَofmina
ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَthe deniersl-mukadhibīna
ٱلضَّآلِّينَthe astrayl-ḍālīna
93

فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ

Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water

فَنُزُلٌۭThen, hospitalityfanuzulun
مِّنْofmin
حَمِيمٍۢ(the) scalding waterḥamīmin
94

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ

And burning in Hellfire.

وَتَصْلِيَةُAnd burningwataṣliyatu
جَحِيمٍ(in) Hellfirejaḥīmin
95

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ

Indeed, this is the true certainty,

هَٰذَاthishādhā
لَهُوَsurely, itlahuwa
حَقُّ(is the) truthḥaqqu
ٱلْيَقِينِcertainl-yaqīni
96

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
